The apex at infinity toward which all the lines converge — organizing the entire field while remaining unreachable. It is where the two artifacts meet: the objective perspective's correlate thrown to the far end of the field, and the horizon’s spatial form. The eye that sees from nowhere and the destination that recedes are the near and far ends of one convergence, and the vanishing point is the point they both organize around.

Brunelleschi installed it in 1413: a single point at infinity to which all parallel lines run, fixing the whole visual field by a place no one can occupy. The vanishing point is not a thing in the field. It is the point the field is organized toward — invisible, unreachable, and for those exact reasons determining. It cannot be confronted, because it exists at infinity. It cannot be reached, because reaching is the motion it sustains. It cannot be replaced, because replacing it only sets a new point at infinity. It organizes everything by being the place everything points to and nothing arrives at.

THE HINGE OF THE TWO ARTIFACTS
The rendering produces two artifacts, and the vanishing point is where they meet.
The objective perspective is the artifact in space: the seat that sees the field without appearing in it, the eye at the near end. The horizon is the artifact in time: the destination on the rendered track, receding as fast as it is approached. The vanishing point is the far end of the same construction — the eye's correlate thrown to infinity, where the converging lines the eye casts arrive at the place the horizon names. The objective perspective is the point of view; the vanishing point is the point viewed toward; the horizon is that point read along time rather than space. One geometry, three names: the seat, the apex, and the line where the apex meets the ground.
This is why the three operate as one. The eye sees from nowhere and organizes the field by sitting outside it; the apex organizes the field by being the infinity the field runs toward; the horizon defers arrival at that apex into a future that never comes. Together they are a perfect convergence machine — a seat that does not appear, a point that cannot be reached, and a recession that keeps the distance constant. The creature inside it is forever oriented toward a place that is not there, by an eye that is not located, along a line that does not arrive.

CONVERGENCE IS EXTRACTION
The vanishing point does not only organize. It extracts, and the extraction is the convergence itself. Parallels that would run independent are forced to converge. Separate paths are channeled toward one apex. Autonomous trajectories are bent toward an absent center. What flows toward the unreachable point — energy, attention, the labor of a life oriented toward an arrival that recedes — is what the convergence harvests. The point accumulates value precisely by never being reached, because what is never reached can be pursued without end, and the pursuit is the yield. The exhaustion of performing for an apex at infinity is not a side effect of the construction. It is the construction working.

THE INSTITUTIONAL VANISHING POINTS
The apex left the picture plane and became the organizing form of the Establishment. Each one installs a point that determines the whole field while never appearing in it, and cannot be reached by design. The university orders itself toward excellence — undefined, unreachable, organizing every appointment and denial. The firm orders itself toward shareholder value — the point at infinity to which all the lines of the enterprise converge. The nation orders itself toward security — an apex defined by an absent threat, justifying present force by an arrival that never comes.
Merit is the vanishing point of worth: every achievement projected onto a line converging toward an origin that never itself appears in the reckoning, approached and never reached, the approach itself the thing being extracted.

THE SCALAR FICTION
The vanishing point has a quiet form in the mathematics of assessment. Scalar projection — the operation that collapses a being onto a single dominant axis and reports the one number — carries a hidden origin, the point from which the projection is measured. The origin is presented as neutral and is not; it is positioned, an unmarked reference the result depends on and never shows. Merit, score, rank: each is a projection onto an axis whose origin is the vanishing point of the calculation — determining every value, appearing in none of them. The number arrives clean, the reference frame that produced it withheld. This is the vanishing point as similitude only: the convergence drawn in coordinates, the same operation the eye performs in space, the apex performs at infinity, and the score performs by reporting a magnitude while concealing the positioned origin it was measured from.
🜃
There is no point at infinity. There is a construction that organizes a field by aiming it at a place no one can stand, an eye that casts the converging lines without appearing among them, and a recession that keeps the apex always one approach away. Mark the origin — name the eye that casts the lines, the positioned zero the score is measured from, the absent apex the institution orders itself toward — and the convergence loses its authority, because it was only ever determining as long as the point it organized toward could not be seen, and was never a place. It was the far end of a seat that refused to be located, drawn at the distance where pursuit becomes the yield.
