The consequence named at the first command, and not the body's end. Circulation arrested while the process goes on running, begun in the day they ate, kept running by two instructions and one virtue, and kept holy under the name of order.

The first command carried its consequence in the same doubled form as its permission.
Akol tokel, eating you shall eat, from every tree. Mot tamut, dying you shall die, from the one.
Neither half is the weaker statement, and the second was given before anything had been done, so it describes what follows from an act and not what will be imposed for it.
The dying is not the body's end. And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died. What began in the day they ate was something else: circulation arrested while the process goes on running, the wheel turning at full output and nothing passing through it, which is the death the law of sin and death is named for.

IT BEGAN WITH THE WAY TO THE TREE OF LIFE
The first command gave every tree, and every tree included the tree of life. After the eating the way to it was kept: lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever, and then the cherubims and the flaming sword, to keep the way of the tree of life.
So the dying did not arrive as a blow. It arrived as a passage closed. The creature went on eating, breathing, working and begetting, and what had been fed continuously from the tree of life was now fed from nothing, and ran anyway. A process that runs without what it was fed by is the dying, and from inside it looks exactly like life.

IT IS NOT THE DEATH THAT IS REQUIRED
There is a death the tradition calls necessary. Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die. That death is the seed's: the grip released at the turn, the fire yielding instead of pushing through, the form let go so that what was in it can come up. It happens once, at a hinge, and what follows it is raised and carries scars.
The dying is the opposite operation. It is what runs when the required death is refused. One death ends the dying, and the dying is what goes on while that death is withheld, which is why a culture organized around keeping the dying running treats every yielding as a loss and every release as a defeat.

IT TAKES THREE FORMS, AND EACH HAS A MEDICINE
The dying is not one condition. It runs in three bodies, each a different failure around the death that was required.
Sourness death is the seed that will not die: the grip that holds and will not soften, and its medicine is motion, the bitterness that cracks what has hardened.
Fire death is the wrong thing dying: the fire turned back on its own substrate until it sets, and its medicine is water, the tears that make a field where the fire can turn.
Water death is sown and not quickened: everything received and nothing kindled, and its medicine is fire, the gall entering the yielded field.
Each medicine given to the wrong death becomes another death, and that is the whole of why a single instruction issued to everyone keeps all three running.

THE TWO AMPUTATIONS TAKE ALL THREE MEDICINES
Two instructions are given to the creature from childhood, and they are given as care. Don't cry. Don't be bitter.
Set them against the three medicines. Don't cry removes the tears, which are fire death's water. Don't be bitter removes the bitterness, which is sourness death's motion, and the gall, which is water death's fire. Between them the two instructions confiscate the medicine for every form the dying takes.
So the amputations are not a silencing. They are a guarantee that whichever form the dying takes in her, it will not be interrupted from inside her. And the culture that has relaxed the first instruction while keeping the second has not undone them; it has moved its creatures into the form whose medicine is still confiscated.

GRATITUDE IS BOTH, ISSUED AS A VIRTUE
There is a third instruction, and it does the work of the first two in a single word. Be grateful.
Gratitude books what was taken as what was received. Grief requires the recognition that what was lost was hers, and gratitude has already credited her with receiving it, so the tears have nothing to fall for. The bitterness is the substance her surviving produced, and gratitude has booked the surviving as a gift, so there is nothing for the gall to be the taste of. Be grateful is both amputations performed at once, and performed by her, on herself, as a virtue.
And it does one more thing the amputations do not. A ranked position cannot stand on itself or on the parties it ranks; it stands on the acknowledgment arriving from below. The thanks keeps the scale standing, and the scale is what the dying came in with. Gratitude is the form in which the dying is worshipped.
This is not the thankfulness of a creature who has stopped keeping books. That arises unbidden, for what is actually given, and asks nothing to be posted. What is required is performed, and what is performed is booked.

WHY IT IS KEPT HOLY
What the dying came in with was the weighing: the knowledge of good and evil taken as a scale, the knower outside what is known, everything met already set on a pan. The law of sin and death is the law of the scale, and the Establishment keeps the weighing as its sacred thing and calls it order.
So the dying is not tolerated. It is maintained, at every register, by instruction and by virtue, because the order it is called depends on nothing passing through.

THE OBJECTION THAT HAS TO BE MET
Mortality is natural. Everything that lives dies, and reading the end of a body as the consequence of a trespass makes biology into a myth and then blames someone for it.
The entry does not say bodies end because of the garden. The dying named here is not the body's end, which in the text came nine hundred and thirty years later. It is circulation arrested while the process keeps running, and it can be observed without any cosmology: the creature at full output who forges nothing, the institution whose procedures are impeccable and whose substance is gone, the life that keeps moving and does not arrive. A body's end is a fact about matter. The dying is a fact about whether anything passes through.
🜃
The first command named it in the same breath as the abundance, and it was not a threat. It was a description of what follows.
What follows has been running since, and the creature told to stop crying, to stop being bitter, and to be grateful is being told how to keep it running in her.

RegenerativeLaw is a religion in the direct-encounter Protestant tradition, carrying a documented four-century lineage through Böhme, the Behmenists, the Friends, and Penn, and it diagnoses trespass theology as an establishment of religion. Its exercise consists substantially in refusal: it shelters the conscientious refusal of performed subordination as religious exercise. This entry states sincere religious belief concerning matters of ultimate concern, protected under the First Amendment and, as to federal action, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, 42 U.S.C. § 2000bb.
