The terror is not an obstacle to the transformation. The terror is the transformation mechanism, and what intercepts it converts the medicine into fuel.

THE MECHANISM
Böhme states it precisely. The Matrix espies light in the root of the fire, is terrified, and through that terror becomes soft, mild, material.
The harshness, the first quality, the contraction and the grip and the stern cold attracting, cannot soften itself through effort. Effort inside harshness produces more harshness, because a grip cannot release through more gripping. Only what terrifies the grip into releasing produces the softening.
The terror makes the harshness become dead in her hard sour property, and the death of hardness arrives as the birth of softness. Same substance, different condition, produced not by gradual improvement but by a shock that terrifies the grip into opening.
Not: you should let go now. But: you cannot hold anymore.

WHY TERROR AND NOT PERSUASION
The Matrix does not decide to soften, does not choose transformation, does not learn to release. She is terrified into releasing.
This is geometry rather than punishment. The flash emerging from maximum bitterness produces a shock the harshness cannot maintain its contraction through. The grip fails not by being convinced to open but by being unable to continue.
Terror dissolves the capacity for continued hardness. Nothing is persuaded.

THE DOUBLE TERROR
Böhme traces a sequence with two shocks in it, and the second is the one that gets missed.
The bitterness, the second quality, the sting and the resistance and the motion that finds no rest, flies up very swiftly, from whence proceeds a twinkling flash. At which the dark harshness is terrified, and sinks back as vanquished.
That is the first terror. The flash terrifies the harshness, the grip releases, the contraction sinks back, overcome by shock rather than by combat.
Then: when the bitterness finds the mother overcome, and as it were half dead, or soft, or meek, it is terrified more than the mother.
That is the second, and the question is why more. Because the bitterness was constituted by opposing the harshness. Harshness existed on its own terms, contraction contracting. Bitterness existed as resistance to it. So when harshness softens, bitterness loses what it was for.
The enemy's transformation terrifies the fighter more than the enemy's hostility ever did.
Then the bitterness loses its terrible right, and becomes white, light. The stinging motion that could not escape becomes radiance. The raging that found no rest becomes illumination. Same energy, different operation.
First the grip releases. Then the fight collapses. Light comes out of both.

NOTHING NEW ENTERED
Everything required was already present in the dark fire.
The locked wheel contained its own release. The raging that found no rest produced the flash that ended the raging, and the flash came from the bitterness itself at maximum intensity, and the terror came from the flash, and the transformation came from the terror.
Which is why the shock cannot be manufactured, scheduled, or produced by decision. It arrives when the bitterness flies up very swiftly: maximum intensity, maximum motion, the wheel at its fastest. And out of that maximum, the flash.
It is also why effort inside the wheel fails as a strategy for leaving it. The wheel that grinds generates what will terrify it into transformation, and the grinding is not the obstacle to that.

WHAT HAPPENS INSTEAD
The terror arrives, and is metabolized.
The first war brought industrial slaughter at a scale not previously witnessed: the trenches, the gas, a generation erased. Terror sufficient to terrify the order that produced it into being unable to maintain its hard sour property. What followed was Versailles. Punishment-logic. They must pay. Never again received as preparation for next time. The grip did not release. The grip found new justification.
The second brought systematic annihilation and cities vaporized, and disclosed what an industrial civilization produces when its own logic completes. What followed was superpowers, a cold war, proliferation, and surveillance. Never again received as always be armed. The horror of what had been done became the reason to become more of it, faster, with better technology.
At the greatest of those horrors, the dissolution of the sorting itself was on offer: the machinery that assigns beings to human and subhuman, worthy and unworthy. The terror was sufficient. What followed was the sorting surviving by generating new categories, and the wound becoming an identity that authorizes.
The list continues in the same shape. Attack produces surveillance and endless war. Climate terror produces geoengineering and green capitalism. Pandemic produces biopolitical control and pharmaceutical capture. Economic collapse produces bailouts for the collapsers.
Every terror that should have softened becomes fuel for further hardening.

THE INTERCEPTION
Here is the mechanism of the failure, and it is precise.
In Böhme's account the terror terrifies the Matrix: the substrate itself, the womb-principle, the harshness that is the ground. But terror is experienced as happening to whoever is caught inside the ground, rather than to the ground.
So the terror arrives, and instead of the grip softening, the gripped grip harder.
Bitterness intercepts it: this proves I was right to resist, this proves the enemy exists, this proves we must fight harder. Harshness intercepts it: this proves we must contract further, more walls, more borders, more separation, and the threat confirms the need for closure.
Both interceptions are sincere and both are accurate reports of an experience. Neither reaches what was supposed to be terrified.

THE WHEEL'S OWN EXHAUSTION
The pattern carries its own exhaustion, which is the only thing in it that is not a strategy.
A wheel that accelerates by feeding on terror eventually spins fast enough that the flash happens despite the interception. The bitterness flies up very swiftly, and the flash proceeds from the extremity of the wheel's own operation.
When enough terror has been metabolized, the metabolizing itself produces the flash that terrifies what should have been terrified all along. Not through anyone's choice. Through the wheel's own logic completing.
When, is not answerable here. The pattern carries its own timing.
