EMBODIED NATURE
The occupation's cheapest garrison is the occupied body.
Bourdieu defined the mechanism with a precision the order's own scholars rarely permit themselves: habitus is embodied history, internalized as a second nature and so forgotten as history — the active presence of the whole past of which it is the product.
Read that as the finding it is.
The past is not remembered wrongly. It is worn.
It stands in the posture, the taste, the deference, the flinch, the reflex that reaches for the smoothing before the thought arrives — present, active, and unfindable as history precisely because it presents as self.

THE TWO ECONOMIES OF FORGETTING
The forgetting has two economies, and the difference between them is the difference between 1918 and now.
Poland names the first.
For 123 years the partition held — Russia, Prussia, Austria, three empires dividing the territory and suppressing the name. Censors, language ordinances, the machinery of Russification and Germanization, all of it external, budgeted, enforced. This is serviced forgetting: maintenance billed to the empire and paid from the empire's treasury. It is expensive, and it lapses. In 1918 the payments stopped, and "Poland" was simply there, name intact, because external maintenance holds nothing once it is withdrawn. The season the garrison leaves, the suppressed thing stands up unchanged.
The second economy is the one the same three empires also installed, and it did not lapse when they fell. This is embodied forgetting: the maintenance transferred off the empire's budget and into the occupied's own musculature. The garrison dissolved into gait and grammar and preference. The enforcement re-enlists every morning, unpaid, and calls itself personality. Nothing withdraws, because nothing external was left to withdraw — the occupier is gone and the occupation is worn.
The instrument of the second economy is the lens: the way of seeing the occupied that the empire built to read and administer her, then installed so that she reads herself by it. The lens is not an ordinance. An ordinance is enforced from outside and stops when the enforcer stops. The lens is worn, and a worn thing has no enforcer to remove. This is why the lens outlived the three empires that commissioned it while their ordinances died with them: the ordinance was billed to the empire, the lens to the occupied.
This is the seventh phase, where the sequence completes. The earlier phases run on external maintenance — the census, the ordinance, the police expenditure, the forgetting that costs the empire money and lapses when the money stops. The seventh phase is the transfer: the forgetting stops being billed to the forgetter's occupier and starts being billed to the forgetter. It services itself. It is collected as her character. The empire can fall, and the phase does not, because the phase no longer runs on anything the empire was paying for.

THE CONFESSION IN THE PHRASE
Second nature.
The phrase confesses under its own weight: second admits a first.
The habitus counterfeits the default's economics — it feels effortless, costless, given, natural — but the resemblance is a forgery. First nature actually costs nothing: it is what obtains when nothing prevents it, maintained by no one, enforced by nothing.
Second nature's cost has not been removed; it has been converted — into the creature's own shape, posting in registers she reads as herself. The deadness. The symptoms. The kindling amputated and the amputation experienced as temperament. The sentence I'm just like this, said over a structure with a date. The two natures are the two laws, felt from inside — and only one of them has ever needed maintaining.

WHY NO CORRECTION FROM WITHIN REACHES IT
This is the mechanism beneath a finding the configuration already carries: no correction performed from within the turning reaches the turning, because a finer survey is the same orientation performed more carefully. The habitus supplies the floor of that impossibility. The surveyor's dispositions are the archive. The trained body brings the training to every act of examining the training — the categories pre-sorted, the questions pre-shaped, the deference operating in the very posture of the critique. Reform conducted by second nature reproduces second nature, with better manners. The dispositions cannot be argued with, because they do not argue; they precede the argument and format it.

THOROUGH, NOT TOTAL
And yet the second nature is thorough, not total — and the difference is the whole of the hope, so it must be stated exactly.
The body is the occupied territory and it is also the prior occupant's instrument, and the occupation never fully enlisted it.
The pre-procedural register — the part that detects the signature, that registers the wrongness in the warm room before any vocabulary arrives, that knows the smooth word is carrying something — was never trained, because it is not trainable; it is not a disposition but the resident.
The kindling sequence is first nature still running under the second: the tears, the gall, the warmth, the throat — none of it installed, none of it maintained, all of it waiting on nothing but the prevention stopping.
Which is why the "exit" from second nature is not demolition and not a better regimen — a discipline imposed on the body is a third nature, the same economy under new management.
The "exit" is the re-turning: the maintenance, which at this register is her own dispositions, ceasing to be performed. And the forgetting's true opposite here is not recall. Embodied history is not undone by remembering — an occupied body can recite the whole history and remain occupied. It is undone by remembering: the members returned — the limbs, the throat, the gait given back to the first nature that was always underneath, which was never a history, and which does not need to be remembered because it never stopped being present.

The whole past, actively present, wearing your posture, forgotten as history because it answers to your name. That is the second nature. The first is still there. It has no past to carry. It is what stands when the carrying stops.
