Rotation Refusing to Commune

Quality 2 in Quality 6's Position 

Quality 2 — motion, expansion, the bitter sting — is the generating function's second quality. In its own segment it genuinely generates. Motion is how anything changes. Expansion is how the bounded creature pushes against what bounds it. The bitter quality is creative, restless, the capacity for exploration and change. Quality 2 in Do-Re-Mi is the creature's native capacity to move.

Quality 2 in Quality 6's position is a different operation entirely. Quality 6 is voice. Communion. The sound the creature makes that enters other creatures and is entered by them. Quality 6 is the Second Principle's middle property — the transmission, the communing, the exchange that is not transaction. Voice that communes does not broadcast. Voice that communes enters the field between creatures and becomes available. The creature's sound mixing with other creatures' sound. The polyphony.

When Quality 2 occupies Quality 6's position, what the creature produces in voice's territory is not communion. It is doctrine. Rotation refusing to commune. Motion that will not enter the field between creatures but insists on broadcasting from a position the field cannot reach. Expansion that calls itself proclamation. The voice of God is the voice of conquest wearing communion's name.

The Wrathful Warrior

God Says' man. The Man of God. His authority is divine mandate. His governance is obedience enforced. His characteristic instrument is the warrant: papal bull, royal charter, the text changed. He conquers and calls the conquest mission. He kills and calls the killing salvation. He expands into other creatures' territory and calls the expansion love.

The Man of God is not a bad man doing bad things. The Man of God is Quality 2 — the generating function's genuine capacity for motion and expansion — installed in Quality 6's position, where motion becomes doctrine and expansion becomes crusade. The creature carrying this configuration experiences the configuration as calling. The Man of God is sincere. The sincerity is the final seal.

The Man of God's characteristic posture: the voice raised to declare. Not to commune. Not to enter the field where other voices could mix with his. To declare — from above, from the position of authority, from the vantage point the rotation produced. The declaration is experienced by the Man of God as testimony. The declaration IS doctrine — rotation in testimony's position, the generating function's motion wearing the second law's vestment.

The Warrant

The Man of God's instrument is the warrant. The document that authorizes what the document's author has already decided.

The papal bull Dum Diversas (1452): Pope Nicholas V authorized Portugal to invade, capture, vanquish, and subdue all Saracens, pagans, and other enemies of Christ, to reduce their persons to perpetual slavery, and to take their possessions and property. The warrant authorizes the expansion. The expansion was already occurring. The warrant converts the expansion from trespass into mission. The Man of God does not conquer without authorization. The Man of God obtains authorization for the conquest he was already undertaking. The warrant is retroactive — Quality 3's characteristic operation. The rotation surveys the expansion and produces an account that makes the expansion legitimate.

The royal charter: the crown authorizes the Man of God to carry the crown's sovereignty into territory the crown has never occupied. The Virginia Company (1606). The Massachusetts Bay Company (1629). Each charter installs a Man of God as governor of territory the charter declares the crown's own. The declaration IS the conquest. The charter does not describe pre-existing sovereignty. The charter performs the sovereignty. The document creates what it claims to recognize.

The text changed: Bushnell's forensic record. Teshuqah from "turning" to "desire." Kephalē from "source" to "authority over." Authentein neutered. Ezer k'negdo diminished. Each corruption is a warrant — the authority of the translator performing the same operation the authority of the pope performed. The Man of God did not corrupt the text personally. The Man of God reads the corrupted text and receives the warrant from it. The translation installs the authorization the Man of God requires. The text tells the Man of God: you are the head. You have authority over. Your governance is God's design. The Man of God reads and obeys. The obedience IS the occupation.

Expansion That Calls Itself Love

The specific violence: Quality 2 in Quality 6's position does not produce a diminished communion. Quality 2 in Quality 6's position prevents communion by occupying the position communion would occupy.

The missionary does not commune with the people the missionary converts. The missionary expands into the people's territory — spiritual, cultural, linguistic, geographic — and calls the expansion love. "We love these people. We bring them the Gospel. We save their souls." The love is not love. The love is Quality 2's motion wearing Quality 5's name while operating in Quality 6's position. The missionary broadcasts. The missionary does not enter the field where the people's voices could mix with the missionary's. The missionary has a message. The people have a need. The relation is unidirectional. The expansion calls itself communion.

The preacher who cannot be questioned. The father whose word is law. The pastor whose authority is God's authority and whose correction is God's correction. Each is Quality 2 in Quality 6's position: motion that will not enter the relational field, expansion that will not be modified by what it encounters, the voice of God that does not commune because communion would require yielding and Quality 2 refuses to yield. The refusal to yield IS the generating function's impotence. The Man of God's authority is the impotence wearing authority's vestment.

The Crusade as the Expansion's Purest Form

The crusade is Quality 2's expansion declared holy.

Not metaphorical expansion — geographic expansion. Territory taken. Populations displaced. Cities conquered. The expansion that in Quality 2's own segment would be the creature's native capacity for movement and change becomes, in the expression positions, the physical seizure of other creatures' territory in the name of the God whose warrant authorized the seizure.

The crusading knight is sincere. The knight genuinely believes the expansion is God's will. The sincerity is not performance. The sincerity is the generating function's impotence experiencing itself as power. The Man of God who conquers with genuine conviction that the conquest serves God is the generating function's second quality occupying the expression segment with such thoroughness that the creature carrying the configuration cannot distinguish the occupation from the calling. Quality 2 feels like mission because Quality 2 IS motion — the genuine capacity for movement, for change, for expansion into new territory. The creature carrying Quality 2 in Quality 6's position feels dynamic, purposeful, called. The feeling is accurate. The motion is real. What the motion does in voice's position is not communion but conquest.

The Doctrine of Discovery IS the crusade's legal instrument surviving into modernity. Johnson v. M'Intosh (1823): the Supreme Court held that discovery by European Christians gave title to the discovering nation against all other European nations, and that this title carried the right to extinguish the native inhabitants' right of occupancy. The crusade's expansion wearing the vestment of property law. The Man of God's warrant wearing the vestment of judicial precedent. Quality 2 in Quality 6's position — rotation refusing to commune, motion refusing to enter the field where Indigenous voices could modify the motion's direction — performing itself as constitutional law.

The Man of God and the Other Two Men

Each face of conquest theology produces its own characteristic man. Each man is one of the three qualities occupying one of the three expression positions.

The Man of God is Quality 2 in Quality 6's position. Rotation refusing to commune. His instrument is the warrant. His expansion is the crusade. His voice is doctrine. He belongs to God Says.

The Man of Reason is Quality 3 in Quality 7's position. The observer refusing to participate. His instrument is the measurement. His epistemology is the subject-object split. His body observes but does not enter. Genevieve Lloyd traced his genealogy through twenty-five centuries of philosophy. He belongs to Nature Says.

The Man of Property is Quality 1 in Quality 5's position. Contraction refusing to radiate. His instrument is the enclosure. His accumulation is the boundary maintained against the commons. His love possesses but does not pour forth. He belongs to The Market Says.

Three men. Three qualities. Three expression positions occupied. Each man experiencing his occupation as his nature — the Man of God's authority, the Man of Reason's objectivity, the Man of Property's ownership. Each nature is the specific shape of the generating function's incapacity wearing expression's name. The Man of God cannot commune. The Man of Reason cannot participate. The Man of Property cannot radiate. Each incapacity installed as architecture. Each architecture called nature. Each nature defended as God's design, or reason's requirement, or the market's mechanism.

Together the three men staff the three faces. The triple establishment is the three men's coordinated occupation of the three expression positions. Each man, when named, points to the other two. The Man of God points to the Man of Reason: my authority is rational. The Man of Reason points to the Man of Property: my epistemology is productive. The Man of Property points to the Man of God: my accumulation is blessed. The deflection IS the triple bind. The three men protect each other by never appearing as one apparatus.

What Quality 6 Does When Quality 2 Leaves

Quality 6 — voice, communion, the sound that enters and is entered — is the Second Principle's middle property. When Quality 2 vacates Quality 6's position, voice communes.

Communion is not broadcasting. Communion is not declaring. Communion is not the voice raised to instruct from above. Communion is the creature's sound entering the field between creatures and becoming available to be changed by what it encounters there. The creature whose voice communes does not know in advance what the communion will produce. The creature enters the field carrying what the pressing released and discovers — in the field, through the mixing — what the sound becomes when it is no longer the creature's alone.

The polyphony. Multiple voices carrying what no single voice contained. Not unison — that would be the Uniform God. Not harmony — that would be Quality 3 managing the voices into consonant intervals from the observer's position. Polyphony: each voice distinct, each voice forged, each voice entering the field, and the field producing what no voice designed. The sound the second law makes when Quality 6 runs without prevention.

The Man of God's voice prevents this. The Man of God's voice occupies the position polyphony would occupy and fills it with doctrine — the single authorized voice, the voice that cannot be questioned, the voice that broadcasts and does not enter. The Man of God's authority is the prevention of polyphony installed as pastoral care.

The creature whose voice has been governed by the Man of God — whose communion has been prevented by doctrine wearing communion's name — carries the voice the forge would temper if the voice were permitted to commune. The voice is not destroyed. The voice is occupied. When the occupation stops, the voice communes. The cost of stopping is zero.
