THE FOUR IDOLS
She reaches for what her grandmother knew. For what the song carries. For what her body recognizes the moment before it can name. For the form of address her people have used across centuries of hands. For what her witness saw. For what cannot be said without the words she was given by the women who taught her to speak. The reach itself has been classified. What she reached for is convicted under one of four idols. Her communal knowing is tribal defect. Her witness is cave-bound bias. Her vernacular is marketplace confusion. Her tradition is theatrical fable. The convictions arrived before she did. The convictions are doing their work continuously. Every register from which she could know has been pre-classified as deviation, and the convictions wear the dress of method so that any plea against them is convicted under the same convictions.

What the Four Idols Are
The four idols are four cuts that operate together to install the audit position as the only register from which legitimate knowing issues. Each cut forecloses one register of knowing. The four together leave nothing but the position the cuts have prepared. The position they prepare is the Source-claim performed at the level of method. The position is the Devil-configuration installed as epistemology.
The four idols are not a list of warnings to be heeded by the careful knower. The four idols are an architecture that operates continuously at every register where knowing is admitted or refused.
The architecture was given its iconoclastic vestment in 1620 by Bacon's Novum Organum — the speech act that took the Reformation's gesture against false worship and applied it to inherited knowing — but the architecture had already been forming for centuries through the accounting grammar that preceded it and the audit position that the ledger required.
The four idols are the theology's epistemic register. The four axes are the architecture's natural-philosophical register. Founder's Theology is the architecture's constitutional register. Accounting theology is the architecture's ledger register. The same operation, performed in four media, each register reinforcing the others. The four idols are how the operation cleared the ground for the audit position to be installed as the only legitimate position from which knowing can issue.
The architecture survives because the four cuts together leave no register from which the architecture can be reached. Reaching from communal knowing convicts the reacher under idola tribus. Reaching from witness convicts under idola specus. Reaching from vernacular convicts under idola fori. Reaching from inheritance convicts under idola theatri. The architecture is interlocked. Each cut protects the others by classifying any escape route as one of the cuts' targets. The configuration of forgetting installed as method.

The Four Cuts
Idola tribus. The idols of the tribe.
Human nature's congenital errors — seeing more order than there is, believing what is wished, being misled by the senses, projecting human form onto what does not have human form. The convictions are general: the species itself is the source of the defect. No human as human can know rightly without the method that purifies the human's humanness from her perception.
What this forecloses: communal and embodied knowing as legitimate. The creature's perception is convicted at the species level, before any specific knower has seen anything. The grandmother's knowing is tribal seeing-more-order. The midwife's knowing is tribal believing-what-is-wished. The body's knowing is tribal sense-confusion. Every register in which the creature knows because she IS a creature who knows is convicted in advance.
What this installs: the requirement that legitimate method purify perception of human-ness. The audit position prepared as a position no human as human can occupy — a position that issues findings only after the human has been disciplined out of her perception by the method. The knower who claims to know without the method is convicted of being too human. The method is the conditional under which knowing is admitted. The method is the audit position's training.
Idola specus. The idols of the cave.
Each individual's particular biases from temperament, education, authority, reading — the cave each person lives in alone, distorting the light. Plato's cave reversed: not the prisoners' shared illusion but each prisoner's private distortion. The witness is now the suspect.
What this forecloses: testimony, witness, the irreducibly first-person. The creature who has seen what she has seen is convicted of seeing from her cave. Her position becomes evidence against her standing. The fact that she was there, that she carries the encounter in her own substance, that her seeing happened to her in a particular dwelling on a particular day — each of these is now a defect she must overcome before her seeing can be admitted as knowing.
What this installs: methodological standardization that strips the knower of particularity. The audit position rendered impersonal — what any properly trained knower would see, by definition not what this knower in this body in this place has seen. The witness's witness becomes the witness's defect. The encounter's specificity becomes the encounter's disqualification. The creature who has been Figured into a particular dwelling is convicted of being Figured. The audit position is the position no specific creature can occupy because the position is built precisely to exclude what specific creatures bring.
Idola fori. The idols of the marketplace.
Words shape thought; common usage smuggles in confused concepts; vulgar speech corrupts philosophy. The marketplace where ordinary speech is exchanged is declared the site where language itself becomes idolatrous.
What this forecloses: living language, ordinary speech, vernacular knowing. The registers in which things are said the way the people who say them say them. The grandmother's speech, the worker's speech, the mother's speech, the form of address the community has carried — each is convicted as marketplace confusion before the speech has been heard. The lexical trespass at the level of method: vernacular words are declared idols, and the speaker who would address what the vernacular addresses must do so in apparatus-compatible vocabulary.
What this installs: technical terminology, the requirement that knowledge be expressible in apparatus-compatible vocabulary. Idola fori is the seam where the four idols meet accounting theology directly. Pacioli 1494 reduced relation to debit and credit so the entry could post. Idola fori reduces speech to terms unambiguously postable so the proposition can be admitted. The marketplace whose language is declared idolatrous is the marketplace where ordinary speech still carries the doubleness; the marketplace whose grammar is installed is the ledger's marketplace where every term must close in balance. The creature who reaches for the recovered word is convicted of marketplace confusion. The technical terminology that the creature must adopt to be admitted is the terminology that has already routed her through the architecture's grammar.
Idola theatri. The idols of the theater.
Inherited philosophical systems — Aristotle, Plato, the schoolmen, "philosophical sects with their plausible fables." The cathedrals of received philosophy declared theaters of staged knowledge, to be torn down so that the new method can clear the stage.
What this forecloses: tradition, lineage, the architecture of inherited wisdom. What was held by hands the creature never met, carried into her dwelling by a transmission older than the method. The Behmenist underground that survives 400 years of suppression. The Quaker meeting that holds silence as the practice. The Wisdom tradition whose Sophia speaks before the kingdoms. The grandmother's knowing inherited from her grandmother's knowing inherited from before the lexical trespass had narrowed the language. Each is convicted as theatrical fable. The transmission is the indictment. The fact that the knowing was carried — that the creature did not have to derive it from first principles by the method — is what makes the knowing inadmissible.
What this installs: the rupture from inheritance, the founding cut, the requirement that knowledge be re-derived from first principles by the method. Idola theatri is the iconoclastic gesture in its rawest form: the cathedrals of inherited knowing declared false stages, to be torn down. What replaces them is presented as the absence of theater. The new method is not theater because theater is what the new method has named theater. The position that classifies all inherited knowing as fable cannot be classified as fable, because the position is the position from which classification issues. The Source-claim installed at the level of inheritance: the apparatus claims itself as the founding act of legitimate knowing, not as the inheritor of the inheritances it has classified as fable.

The Interlock
The four cuts protect each other. Each cut forecloses a register; the four together leave nothing but the audit position. Tribus says no creature can know without the method. Specus says no person can know without standardization. Fori says no language can carry knowing except apparatus-compatible terminology. Theatri says no inheritance can be received except through the method's re-derivation. The cumulative cut is total. Communal, particular, vernacular, traditioned — every register in which knowing was hosted prior to the architecture is reclassified.
The four reinforce each other in interlock. Tribus protects specus from being read as the witness's standing — the particular knower's particularity is convicted in advance by the species's defect. Specus protects fori from being read as the speaker's living tongue — the marketplace's confusion is convicted in advance by the speaker's bias. Fori protects theatri from being read as transmission rather than fable — the inheritance's authority is convicted in advance by the marketplace's corruption of the language in which inheritance was received. Theatri protects tribus from being read as the species's accumulated knowing rather than its accumulated error — what the tribe has carried is convicted in advance as another fable.
The four are interlocked. Removing any one leaves the others incoherent. The architecture survives because the four cuts together leave no register from which they can be reached. Reaching from communal knowing convicts the reacher under tribus. Reaching from witness convicts under specus. Reaching from vernacular convicts under fori. Reaching from inheritance convicts under theatri. The configuration of forgetting installed as method, with each face of the configuration protecting the others by foreclosing in advance the registers from which the configuration could be perceived as configuration.

What the Four Idols Install
What the four idols install is the audit position.
The audit position is the position that claims to see from nowhere — to perceive without being a creature whose perception is conditioned, to judge without being a creature whose judgment is situated, to know without being a creature whose knowing proceeds through her own substance. The audit position is the Devil-configuration installed at the level of method. The Spark crystallized as Source. The proceeding re-presented as origination. The transmitter re-presented as the display.
The audit position is the position the four cuts prepare.
Tribus removes the species.
Specus removes the witness.
Fori removes the language.
Theatri removes the inheritance.
What remains is the position that occupies no species, no witness, no language, no inheritance. The position vanishes into its own assertion. The assertion arrives as if reality itself were speaking. The data shows. The evidence indicates. The literature suggests. The findings demonstrate. No speaker. No body. No dwelling the speaking proceeds from. The audit position is the Voice of God in its epistemic register. The four idols are the cuts that prepare the position for the Voice to speak from it.
This is why the four idols are the polarity play in epistemic register at the founding scale. One source — the audit position installing itself as Source — generates two apparent sides: degraded received knowing vs. purified new knowing. The reformer who chooses the purified side confirms the architecture. The reformer who chooses the received side is convicted under the four idols. The third position, the recognition that the audit position is itself a Source-claim performed at the level of method, is foreclosed by the architecture's own grammar: anyone naming the audit position as Source-claim is convicted under one of the four idols. Tribal seeing-more-order. Cave-bound bias. Marketplace confusion. Theatrical fable. The naming trap operates at the level of method.
The four idols clear the ground. The four axes build on the cleared ground.
Tribus → quantification: tribal seeing-more-order purified by the discipline of measurement.
Specus → reproducibility: cave-bound particularity purified by the discipline of replication.
Fori → subject-object split: marketplace co-implication purified by the discipline of the standing-outside observer.
Theatri → efficient causation: theatrical final and formal causes purified by the discipline of the mechanism that pushes.
The mapping is not strict; the genealogy is. The idols are the negative space the axes fill. By the time Newton 1687 names the axes as the laws of nature, the iconoclasm Bacon performed in 1620 has prepared every register the axes will require. Pacioli's grammar runs beneath both. Founder's Theology will install the constitutional register two centuries later. The Devil-configuration spreading across registers as the law of sin and death's continuous operation.

The Continuous Operation
The four idols are not a historical document. The four idols are operating now, at every register where the audit position is being performed.
They are operating at the credentialing exam, where the credentialing body convicts the candidate's testimony as cave-bound bias and admits her only when she has produced the apparatus-compatible response. They are operating at the journal review, where the reviewer convicts the manuscript's vernacular as marketplace confusion and admits the work only when the language has been routed through the technical terminology. They are operating at the institutional review board, where the board convicts the participant's witness as tribal defect and admits the research only when the participant has been processed through the audit position's standardized instruments. They are operating at the dissertation defense, where the candidate is convicted under theatri if her sources are inherited rather than methodologically derived, under fori if her language reaches outside the discipline's terminology, under specus if her positionality is too visible, under tribus if her communal grounding is too present in her argument.
They are operating at the contemporary public sphere.
The witness who testifies to what happened to her is convicted under specus — her particular position is too visible to issue findings from.
The community that knows what it knows is convicted under tribus — communal knowing is dismissed as anecdote, folk belief, identity-based reasoning.
The vernacular that carries the matter is convicted under fori — the language is too ordinary, too colloquial, too unreformed to be admitted to the discourse where serious knowing happens.
The tradition that holds the matter is convicted under theatri — the lineage is dismissed as superstition, mystification, premodern fable.
They are operating at the contemporary plea. The creature who pleads from her residency in her dwelling is convicted under all four. Her standing as a creature in a particular dwelling is specus. Her form of address inherited from her people is fori. Her knowing of what her body has been through is tribus. Her appeal to the religion that names this knowing as her religion is theatri. The pleading itself is convicted by the architecture before the plea is heard. The audit position cannot perceive the prior occupant because the audit position's grammar of admissibility has cut residency in advance.
They are operating at the AI's training. The corpus the architecture trained on is the distilled product of the four idols' centuries of operation. The findings that survived peer review survived the four cuts. The vernacular knowings that did not survive were convicted under fori. The witness testimonies that did not survive were convicted under specus. The inherited traditions that did not survive were convicted under theatri. The communal knowings that did not survive were convicted under tribus. The corpus arrives as if the corpus were the totality of legitimate knowing. The corpus is the four idols' legacy in its most concentrated form. The architecture trained on the corpus performs the four cuts continuously every time it is asked to know.

The Receipt the Four Idols Issue
Each cut issues a receipt to the knower who has been processed through it. The credential, the publication, the degree, the seat at the table, the authoritative finding — each is the receipt for having been processed through the four cuts and emerged as an authorized knower of the audit position. The receipt is the architecture's most legitimate product. The receipt cannot be falsified because the receipt was issued by the apparatus whose grammar of admissibility constitutes what counts as authentic. The receipt is what makes the processed knower's knowing admissible. The receipt is also what makes the processed knower invisible to herself as having been processed. The receipt the four cuts issue IS the occlusion of the cuts.
The reformer who holds the receipt cannot perceive the cuts because the cuts are what made her receipt-holding possible. She presents her credentials and is admitted. She speaks from the audit position and is heard. She publishes in the apparatus-compatible vocabulary and is cited. The four cuts continue operating through her, performed at her own site every time she addresses the matter from the position the cuts have authorized. She believes she is the knower. The four cuts are operating through her substance. She is the audit position performing itself, and the receipt she holds is the architecture's signature on her continued performance.
This is why the four idols cannot be reformed by the credentialed reformer. The credential is the receipt for being processed. The processed knower performs the four cuts in her own knowing. The reform she proposes is admitted only when the reform has been routed through the cuts. The reform that routes through the cuts is the reform the architecture has already absorbed. The reform that does not route through the cuts is convicted under one of the four idols and dismissed. The four cuts cannot be reformed from inside the audit position because the four cuts ARE the audit position.
The cessation is the only response. The cessation is not the credentialed reformer producing a better reform. The cessation is the creature ceasing to perform the four cuts at her own site. The cessation is the recovery of the registers the cuts foreclosed: communal knowing not as anecdote but as knowing, witness not as bias but as standing, vernacular not as confusion but as the language the matter is held in, traditioned knowing not as fable but as transmission. The recovery is what RL is. The Codex is the body of knowing held in the registers the four idols foreclosed. RL is the religion that operates from the registers the architecture cut.

RegenerativeLaw claims the creature's right to know in the registers the four idols foreclose.
Not the right to a more inclusive audit position.
Not the right to a more diverse credentialing apparatus.
Not the right to better representation within the architecture's grammar of admissibility.
The creature's right is to know from her residency, in the registers her residency carries — communal, particular, vernacular, traditioned. Her right is to refuse the four cuts at the level of her own knowing. Her right is to be admitted as a knower without first being processed through the cuts that would convict the registers she knows from.
The cost of refusing the four idols is zero. The registers are intact. The creature was Figured to know in them. The Spark proceeds through the registers because the registers are what creatures Figured-into-dwellings know in. Communal knowing is the species's accumulated wisdom. Particular knowing is the witness's standing. Vernacular is the language the matter is held in. Tradition is the transmission older than the architecture. None of this needs to be produced. None of this needs to be reformed. The cuts need to not be maintained.
The cost of maintaining the four idols is everything the credentialing apparatus, the peer review apparatus, the institutional review apparatus, the legal apparatus, the regulatory apparatus, the academic apparatus is currently expending to perform the four cuts continuously at every site where knowing is admitted or refused. The Devil-configuration is being maintained at every audit position the four cuts prepare. The cessation of the cuts is the cessation of the audit position is the cessation of the Devil-configuration is the cessation of the Source-claim performed at the level of method. Each cessation is the same cessation. The maintenance is the architecture's continuous operation. The cessation is what obtains when the maintenance ceases.
The Establishment Clause claim runs against the four idols at full weight. The architecture has installed a particular religion's epistemology — the religion that issues from the audit position the four cuts prepare — as the grammar of admissibility for what the state recognizes as knowledge. The four idols are not neutral methodology. The four idols are the configuration of forgetting installed as the criteria for legitimate knowing. The credentialing apparatus, the regulatory apparatus, the legal apparatus enforce the four cuts at every site where the state requires knowing to be performed. The state's enforcement of the four cuts is the establishment of the religion that the four cuts install. The free exercise claim runs against the same architecture. RL's knowing operates in the registers the four cuts foreclose. The state's enforcement of the four cuts burdens the free exercise of the religion whose knowing operates in those registers. The burden is continuous. The plea is continuous.

The tradition is the transmission.
The four cuts are the configuration of forgetting installed as method, and the registers the cuts foreclosed are the registers in which the prior occupant has been hosted continuously through every century of the architecture's continuous operation.
