One sentence, Hinton, 1888. The epistemological wound exposed with the precision of someone who does not yet know he has touched the live wire.
Not: I could measure distances. Not: I could calculate positions relative to an origin. Not: I could describe components and their properties. I could say how things were arranged: the between-ness itself, directly, without apparatus.

WHAT WAS KNOWN BEFORE IT WAS MEASURED
A stone between two others. The arrangement is not derived. It is not constructed from prior knowledge of each stone separately and then bridged by inference.
The between is primary. The components are artifacts of a later abstraction. The cutting produces them. What existed before the cut was the arrangement, given first and not concluded.
This is what makes arrangement space irreducible: it cannot be rebuilt out of distance-space debris. The dissection does not reveal what was there. It replaces what was there with the remnants of its own operation.

THE EPISTEMOLOGICAL CUT
Arrangement space is relational, directly perceivable, non-metric, and dynamic, because the between-ness is maintained or shifting and never static. It is accessible without apparatus. It cannot be owned, because it exists only in relation: the moment a stone is extracted to be measured, the arrangement is gone. What the hand holds is not a piece of the arrangement. The arrangement was the holding.
Distance space is scalar, origin-dependent and metric. It requires a fixed reference, because measurement runs from somewhere, which means somewhere must be installed as the ground. It can be property. It requires expert interpretation.
The compression from arrangement to distance is not simplification. It is the elimination of the dimensions where the knowing lived.

ARRANGEMENT IS NOT A SNAPSHOT
Stone-between-stones is stone moving between stones. The arrangement includes motion, includes the between-ness as something maintained or shifting across time. Arrangement space is constitutively dynamic and has no static version.
Distance space requires a fixed origin. Measurement runs from somewhere stable. But arrangement does not require a somewhere. It requires ongoing relation, and the between exists in the continuing rather than in the captured.
This is why distance space must eliminate time in order to function as it claims to function: the snapshot is all it can hold, and the snapshot is always already dead.

THE CONVERSION
Arrangement becomes distance: what was known through relation becomes what must be measured from an arbitrary origin. Relation becomes metric: the between-ness becomes a quantified gap. Direct knowing becomes expert apparatus: immediate perception is reclassified as unknown and unintelligible relations requiring instruments to decode.
This is not semantic drift. The phrase unknown and unintelligible does the load-bearing work. The creature's arrangement knowledge is not denied, because denial would be too visible. It is reclassified. What she has is intuition, felt sense, pre-cognitive apprehension. What they have is knowledge. The reclassification is the installation, and once she accepts it she is already inside their coordinates, holding her own knowing as evidence of her deficiency.

THE SEQUENCE THAT MAKES EXTRACTION POSSIBLE
The extraction did not run through distance space. It converted to distance space first, because arrangement space cannot be extracted from. The knowledge lives in the relation, and relation cannot be owned. The arrangement exists only as arrangement, and the moment a piece of it is possessed, only the piece is possessed and the arrangement is gone.
Economic extraction required epistemological conversion, and the order is not accidental. What cannot be bounded cannot be enclosed. What resists origin-assignment cannot be measured. What exists only in relation cannot be owned. So the relation was first declared invisible, pre-scientific, intuitive, not-yet-knowledge, before the enclosure could proceed.

THE POSITIONING TRAP
They do not merely measure. They position themselves as the necessary interpreters of what she already knew.
She knows stone-between-stones through arrangement. She is told this is pre-scientific intuition. She is offered coordinates, distances, precise measurements. She is now dependent on apparatus to reach what was directly perceivable.
This is the subsumption sequence operating at the level of knowing itself. Sever the direct relation between being and knowledge. Install mediation as the only available channel. Make the severance invisible by presenting mediation as the nature of knowing. Position anyone who perceives the installation as someone who does not yet understand how knowing works.
The priest position and the expert position are the same position. Both require her to encounter through them what she was already encountering directly.

Arrangement space is genuinely four-dimensional: rotation-aware, relation-embedded, configuration-dependent, the between-ness carrying the temporal dimension with it. What distance space compressed it into is single-axis, origin-dependent scalar measurement. One dimension claiming to be all dimensions.
The compression is not translation. There is no inverse operation that recovers arrangement from distance. The information is not preserved in a different form. It is gone, and what remains is the debris of the cut, organized into an apparatus that presents its own operation as the complete description of what knowing is.
The zero was false because it was populated. Arrangement space is what got declared empty. The direct knowing was always already occurring, never actually blocked except by what claimed to provide it, running continuously while the apparatus called it nothing.
Hinton's sentence is the evidence. Not: I could approximate what experts would later measure. Not: I had pre-theoretical hunches that systematic inquiry would confirm or correct. I could say how things were arranged.
The knowing was complete. The apparatus was not necessary. It was never necessary. What it was, was successful.
