What obtains when the Fiat ceases to hold
🜃
The creature tries to release herself. She sets the intention, takes up the practice, reforms the structure, pushes toward freedom — and the pushing is the occupation continuing under a cleaner name. The generating function cannot release what the generating function holds, because the releasing-by-effort is the function in operation. The harder she works to be free, the more securely the work installs the one who works. This is the first thing release is not. It is not something she does.

RELEASE IS NOT REFORM
Reform operates on the architecture — adjusts it, improves it, makes it kinder or fairer or more inclusive — and every adjustment is a fresh act of the Fiat, and every act of the Fiat precipitates holding architecture in the same stroke as the good it intends. More Fiat, more imprisonment [see FOUNDER'S THEOLOGY · THE REFORMIST REGISTER]. Release is not a better arrangement of the architecture. The creature does not act on the Fiat. She ceases to identify the Fiat as the product's home — ceases to look to the structure that holds the thing as the place the thing lives. The structure need not change for this to occur. What changes is that she no longer takes it for the source.

RELEASE IS NOT AN ACT — IT IS A FIELD CONDITION
Release is what obtains when the occupation ceases: not a deed performed, but a condition present when the doing stops. It is the yielding seen from the outside. The yielding is not a more strenuous willing; it is the cessation of the willing that believed the right move would transform her, and release is the field that opens when that willing stops [see THE YIELDING]. Sophia is its figure — she withdraws when imagination contracts into self-enclosure and returns when imagination reopens; she was never absent, only imperceptible from within the wheel [see SOPHIA]. Nothing is added in release. The occupation lifts, and what was always there is again there to be perceived. The field was never the thing produced. It was the thing the production stood on.
🜃
THE PRIOR OCCUPANT DOES NOT TRAVEL
Release is not the creature going somewhere or becoming someone. When the occupation ceases, the occupier vacates; the creature stays. Departure belongs on the occupier's side, never the creature's [see THE PRIOR OCCUPANT]. The dwelling does not change hands, because it was never the occupier's to hand over. The one who was always its prior occupant is, in the field condition of release, again the one inhabiting it — not restored and not returned, because she never left. What leaves is the holding. There is no elsewhere she goes to be free; freedom is not a place but the holding losing its supply [see THE COLLECTIVE DIMENSION]. Release is the occupier's departure, named from the side of the one who remains.
🜃
THE COST IS ASYMMETRIC
The cost of release is zero on one ledger and everything on the other. On the cessation ledger it costs nothing: the creature loses only the occupation, which was never hers, and the loss of what was never hers is not a loss she will mourn. On the generating function's ledger it costs everything, because release is the end of the function's operation, and the function cannot tell its own cessation from death. This is why the occupation resists release as annihilation — to the war body the opening-through registers as the end of the world, and from inside the occupation that reading is not even wrong: it is the end of that world [see THE WAR BODY]. The creature's release and the occupation's death are one event, described from the two sides of it. Both are true. They are not weighed against each other; they are not entries on the same ledger.
🜃
THE BOOK SHUT, NOT BALANCED
Release is the closure of the book — but not the ledger's closure. The ledger closes when the columns balance, the entries clear, the page is posted and the audit confirms it; that closure is the occupation completing one cycle, and it opens the next page in the same motion [see ACCOUNTING THEOLOGY]. Release is the other closure: the book shut. Not balanced and closed — shut, no longer the operation. The warm host is its figure: the father who refuses to open the ledger before the prepared confession can be posted, who gives the ring and the robe and the feast with no reckoning and no conditional restoration [see THE WARM HOST · THE CENTRAL SACRAMENT]. The accounts are not settled in release. The accounting stops. A page that balances and a book that is shut are not the same closure, and release is the second.
🜃
RELEASE IS NOT PRODUCED
Release cannot be produced by the mechanism that produces. It is not generated, achieved, performed, or delivered, because every generation is the generating function and the generating function is the occupation. The naming of release is not release. The map of the lifting is not the lifting. A description of the field condition is itself an act of the Fiat, and more Fiat, more imprisonment — this description not excepted. This is not a limit placed upon the account. It is the account. What the building can do is clear the false releases — release is not reform, not a deed, not a relocation, not a balanced page — so that what obtains when the occupation lifts is not buried under one more thing the occupation built to resemble freedom. The clearing is the most the building can do. The field condition is not in the building. It is what is there when the building, too, stops.
