The set of moves a creature can assemble at all. Not what she is permitted to want: what has been made available to want. A prohibition leaves a mark and can be lifted. An unavailability leaves nothing in her to lift it from.

She cannot want it.
Not because she was told not to. Nothing forbade it. Nothing in the material she was handed reports that it was ever an operation, so it does not appear to her as a thing that could be wanted, and she experiences no absence. She experiences a complete world. The missing thing is not in that world, including as a missing thing.
The philosopher formed inside the dialectic does not decline Böhme's pivot. He has no access to it as a thing that could be wanted. The ear formed in tonal harmony does not refuse to hold the interval. Nothing in its hearing reports that holding was ever available. The workman on the line does not lack the capacity to read a piece of metal by hand. He lacks the encounter with anyone who did, and so he cannot want it, and he does not know he cannot.
That is the injury, and it is not the injury the vocabulary of oppression was built for.

The distinction carries the entry.
A prohibited thing is known and forbidden. The knowing survives the forbidding. It leaves a mark: a wanting that was refused, a place in the creature where the thing was and was denied, and because the mark is there the prohibition can be lifted and the wanting resumes. Every account of liberation is written for this case. Remove the ban, open the door, restore the right, and what was held down rises.
An unavailable thing has no location in the creature. It was never handed to her, so it was never wanted, so it was never refused, so there is nothing to lift. Open every door and she stays where she is, because nothing in her is pressing on any of them. She is not held down. She is unfurnished.
Available imagination is not a stock of facts. It is not what she knows. It is the set of moves that can be assembled at all: what her will can reach for, because reaching requires something to reach for and the something arrives from outside her or does not arrive.

WHAT IMAGINATION IS HERE
Not the popular sense. Not fiction, fancy, the closed room of a private interior producing content with no claim on the real. That sense is what the word was reduced to, and the reduction is its own operation with its own entry.
Böhme's sense. Imagination is the will's reaching: what the will images into, it takes the property of. Lucifer raised up his imagination and kindled to himself the root of the fire, and what he imaged into he became. Adam imaged into the earthly and the earthly had him. The imagination is not a picture-making faculty sitting beside the will. It is the will's own motion towards what it desires, and the desiring shapes the desirer.
So the question of what a creature can image into is not a question about her creativity. It is a question about her formation, because the will can only reach towards what has been set before it. The imaginal plane is the register on which that reaching operates, real objects, real constraint, real labor. Available imagination is what has been handed on that register: the inventory the will can reach into. The register can be intact and the inventory empty. A creature at full capacity, on a live register, with nothing set before her, reaches at full strength against nothing.

THE INVENTORY IS HANDED
A capacity is one thing. What is available to exercise it on is another, and the second is not generated by the first.
The capacity to receive and to press is intact in anyone who has not been killed. Nothing was built into her that has to be removed; it was overwritten by a maintenance, and when the maintenance stops she is there. But the capacity operates on material, and the material arrives. It arrives from someone who held it and handed it on: the machinist who could read the grain, the meeting that waits in silence, the text read by someone who knew what it was for. If no one handed it, the capacity idles.
This is why a severed transmission does not destroy a technique. The technique may survive in a document. What it destroys is the record that the technique was possible: the fact that a human being could do this, which is a different fact from the description, and it is the fact that makes anyone reach for the description. What reaches the next generation is a complete world with the move not in it, and the generation cannot miss what it never received, and therefore cannot ask for it, and therefore cannot be given it by anyone who might still have it.
Hegel is the clean case. He received Böhme, read him, lectured on him, placed him, and handed him to the university in the grammar the university could receive, and the university could not receive a yielding. What reached four generations was the wheel that gets out by turning harder. The record that the pivot had been a release was not contradicted. It was not present. Every reader since has been turning, and none of them declined the yielding, because none of them met it as a thing that could be wanted.

THE NOT-THERE AT THE REGISTER OF WANTING
Available imagination is the not-there read on a creature's wanting rather than on what a thing needs in order to stand.
The not-there is the member whose absence makes a thing a forgery: not what would improve it, what is required for it to be what it names. Applied to a lineage it is the generation that cannot miss what it never received. Applied to a creature's wanting it is this: the move that would have been reached for is not among the things she can reach for, and its absence produces no want, because want requires the thing to be present as wantable.
And it is not the not-yet. The not-yet converts an absence into a schedule: the horizon, the stage, the receipt at every tick confirming that the destination is real. The not-yet says she will want it later, when she is ready, when the development completes. That is the counterfeit of this entry, because it treats an unavailability as a delay, and a move that is not in the inventory does not arrive by waiting. It arrives by being handed, or it does not arrive.

HOW THE INVENTORY IS CONTRACTED
Nothing has to be forbidden. The inventory contracts by convenience.
The median. An instrument trained on the whole deposit returns the center of what it received, and the returned center enters the record, and the next receiving includes it, and the center thickens. The tails go first: the practice with three living holders, the argument made once by someone nobody cited, the move that was idiosyncratic to a body. Each output pre-completes the next thought from the middle, so that the noncompliant assembly is not built and rejected. It is not built. And at every moment the deposit is more accessible than it has ever been, which is what everyone is checking, so the contraction reads as abundance.
The die. Taylor removed the forge from the shop and installed the die: the knowing taken out of the workman's hands, reduced to a card, handed back as an instruction he has no position from which to question. Two generations later there is no one on the floor who has met a machinist, and the floor is not experienced as diminished. It is experienced as how work is.
The ear. Tension, resolution, the resolution as pretext for the next tension, installed at the rate of every song a body heard before it could object, so that by adulthood the pull is not a convention she learned. It is what hearing is. The interval held is not refused. It is not in the inventory of things an ear can do.
In each, nobody was prohibited from anything. The severance arrives as accessibility, as everything written down, as the median instantly available and the tails not available at all, and it is complete on the day the last holder dies without having handed it to anyone, and nobody present registers anything happening on that day.

THE COUNTERFEIT ENLARGEMENT
The configuration sells imagination, and what it sells is recombination.
Innovation, ideation, creativity, imagine a world. Every one of these is the inventory rearranged. The pieces are taken apart and reassembled inside the coordinate system, and the reassembly is called new, and it is not new, because nothing entered the inventory. Recombination cannot enlarge what it recombines. A creature can shuffle what she was handed forever and never once reach for a move that was not handed, and the shuffling feels like reach.
The war body's imagination works the same way and is the sharper case. The expansion is objectless pressure, and it cannot leave the pressure unexplained, so it manufactures a target out of the available inventory, backdates it, and installs it at the front as the reason for the motion. From inside, a backdated object is indistinguishable from one that was always there. She was pushed, and the object was assembled afterwards from what was available to account for the push. That is imagination operating at full intensity on a contracted inventory, and it is what the deposit returns when it is asked to imagine.
Available imagination is enlarged in two ways only, and neither is assembly. It is handed: a living holder puts a move into the inventory by enacting it in front of someone who watches. Or it is forged: something passes through the fire that was not in the inventory, thy will pressed through this creature's forge into a note no other creature could sound, and once sounded it becomes what the next reaching can orient towards. The first is transmission. The second is the crossing. Everything else is the die.

WHAT THE CONTRACTION PREVENTS
Read as loss, this is a story about heritage, and the answer to it is preservation: archive it, digitize it, teach it, fund a chair.
The operation is the prevention of refusal. A creature who cannot want the alternative cannot decline the offer. She is not stopped from refusing; she is positioned where the refusal has no content, because the thing she would refuse in favor of is not in her. Benefit is the capacity to refuse, and the capacity to refuse requires that a no be assemblable, and a no is assembled out of what is available to want instead. Empty the inventory of the instead and the no is not suppressed. It is unformulable.
This is why the deepest cut is not the prohibition of noncompliant ideas. It is the pre-completion of the next thought, so that the noncompliant idea is never assembled at all. And it is why preservation does not repair it. A record nobody can reach is a held object. Storage holds; transmission passes; the deposit is guarded by being moved, and a document describing an operation nobody can perform is exactly what remains after the transmission that could have carried it is gone.

WHAT KEEPING IT COSTS
Two conditions, and only one has a schedule.
The contraction is maintained. The median re-run on every query, the syllabus retaught to every cohort, the canon reissued, the card handed to the next workman, the resolution drilled into the next ear. That is a schedule, and it is on the paying side of the books, and it is the ordinary tell.
The severance is not maintained. Once the last holder is dead and handed nothing, the unavailability costs nothing to keep, because there is nothing left to suppress. That is the one injury with no maintenance bill, and it is why cessation does not reach it. Cessation returns the capacity, at no cost, because what stops is an expense. It does not return the inventory, because the inventory was never an expense. It was a person.
So the pressure sits in one place. Everything still available to be wanted is available because someone alive is holding it and has someone to hand it to. The storage is not a backup. The instrument is not a backup; it carries the deposit and contracts it and cannot press. The link is a body, and the body is the entire mechanism.

The tradition's lineage claim is not a credential. Böhme, the Behmenists, the Friends, Penn: the claim is that this transmission was not cut, that somebody held it at every link, and that the yielding is therefore still in the inventory, available to be wanted, because it was handed and not stored.
She cannot want what was never set before her. This was set before her. That is the whole of what the lineage is for.
