The generating function declared the mechanism of life, and the declaration was called science. Not a claim that evolution did not happen. A claim about what was smuggled in with the account of how.

I. THE SIN AND REDEMPTION SPINE
Darwinism carries a sin and redemption narrative, and not as metaphor. As the spine.
Creatures are born into insufficiency. Variation means not yet fitted, carrying the burden of difference the creature did not choose. This is the Fall, announced not as the Fall but as the starting condition of all biological existence. The creature enters unproven and must demonstrate fitness or perish.
Then the creature struggles, against the environment and against other creatures. Competition is the field in which worth is tested, announced not as judgment but as the way nature sorts its products. The mechanism performs identically either way: worth determined by performance under conditions the creature did not create, against criteria it did not set.
The fit survive and reproduce, and adaptation is salvation. The unfit perish, and extinction is damnation, announced as the natural consequence of insufficient fitness. And in that announcement the is-ought collapse happens: that some organisms survived becomes that the surviving form is the better form.
The verdict is delivered from outside the creature on criteria it did not choose. God's will, here called selective pressure. Which is the Great Chain of Being reformatted as a branching tree. The medieval theologians ordered creation vertically from mineral to angel. The biologists ordered it temporally from simple to complex. The axis rotated and the hierarchy held, and so did the claim underneath it, that some beings are more than others as a matter of their nature.

II. THE THREE QUALITIES INSTALLED AS MECHANISM
The parallel is not only narrative. Darwinism installs the generating function's first three qualities as the generating principle of all biological form.
Contraction appears as scarcity. Resources are limited and there is not enough for all. Darwin read Malthus in 1838 and saw a mechanism, and the mechanism he saw was Quality 1 in a naturalist's vocabulary. The struggle for existence is the wheel of anguish declared the foundational fact of biology. The first operation, to contract and to produce insufficiency, is presented as nature's own character rather than as one quality's signature.
Motion appears as competition. Who moves faster, adapts quicker, outcompetes. The bitter stinging expansion that drives organisms against each other, declared the mechanism of all biological change. The arms race. The Red Queen. The escalation of predator and prey, parasite and host.
The rotation appears as taxonomy. The observer who sorts organisms into fit and unfit, higher and lower, ancestral and derived. The classification is the generating function producing a vantage point from which to survey its own products and then calling the survey science. The branching tree is the observer's map of the field the observer made, which is why it looks like a discovery and functions as a self-portrait.

III. WHAT IT DOES TO EACH SEGMENT
Beyond installing the generating function as the mechanism, the theory performs the two capture operations at the level of biological explanation itself.
The transforming function is reduced to mutation. Random, directionless, blind. Fire stripped of sovereignty and the pivot reduced to accident. Mutation is what happens before selection acts on it, so transformation occurs but only the generating function gives it direction. The tollbooth installed inside a theory rather than at a gate: Quality 4's jurisdiction revoked by definition, so that no observation could ever restore it.
Expression is reduced to phenotype. Under the second law, expression is Qualities 5, 6 and 7 actually running: love radiating, voice communing, body participating. Under this account, expression is the trait that passes or fails the fitness test, and what cannot be measured, quality and testimony and participation and attraction, is declared biologically irrelevant.
Resurrection is reduced to reproduction. What feeds back is the genome, which is the franchise. Not what was lived in this creature's body but what can be copied. The singular crossing, this creature's unrepeatable life with its particular pressing and its particular scars, is declared to signify nothing, because only what replicates counts.

IV. SPENCER CAME FIRST
Social Darwinism is usually defended against as a misapplication of Darwin to human society. The chronology does not support the defense.
Herbert Spencer published Social Statics in 1851, eight years before the Origin. The doctrine of a society that improves by letting the unfit fail was already written and already in print. Spencer then coined the phrase survival of the fittest in Principles of Biology in 1864, after reading Darwin. And Darwin took the phrase into the Origin at its fifth edition in 1869, on Wallace's suggestion, as a substitute for natural selection.
Read the dates in order. The social doctrine was not derived from the biology. The biology borrowed the social doctrine's vocabulary, and the borrowing ran back up the chain into the text now cited to prove the doctrine was a distortion of it.
So Spencer did not extend a biological principle past its proper domain. The qualities were already theological while they wore the biologist's coat, and moving them from Nature Says to Market Says changed nothing operational. The scarcity that drove selection drives market competition. The fitness that determined reproductive success determines economic success. The hierarchy evolution produced among species, the market produces among persons.
And the is-ought collapse is word for word the same. That some accumulate more becomes that the accumulating class is the fitter class. Three costumes on one hierarchy: ordained by God, produced by selection, revealed by the market.
The deflection is what keeps it standing. Name Social Darwinism as ideology and the defense points to biology, because natural selection is just science. Name the biology as theology and the defense points to the fossil record, because evolution happened. Name the is-ought collapse and the defense invokes the line between describing and prescribing, after the description has already prescribed.

V. THE GOODWIN DIAGNOSTIC
Brian Goodwin, theoretical biologist, professor at the Open University and later at Schumacher College, and a member of the Santa Fe Institute faculty, named the theological cargo from inside a scientific position. In How the Leopard Changed Its Spots, 1994, he argued that the Darwinian narrative carries a sin and redemption spine without the theology, and that selection alone cannot account for biological form, because self-organizing process rather than genetic instruction filtered by selection generates the dynamic wholes that organisms are.
He was right about the cargo. He was right that form arises from process the account cannot explain, right that the analytical method amputates quality from biology, and right that a participatory and qualitative attention produces real knowledge of organisms.
He could not cross. His proposal was a science of qualities to balance a science of quantities, and the balancing preserved the observer position, kept the generating function's epistemology as one of the two things being weighed, and left the institution standing. He described what expression does from outside expression, which is the exact position he had just named as the wound.
Which is the general result and not a criticism of one biologist. Naming the cargo does not dislodge it, because the generating function can acknowledge its own operation and go on operating, and the acknowledgment becomes another of its products. What dislodges it is not better science. It is the recognition that the whole coordinate scheme, including the coordinates that produce better science, is one religion's epistemology. Not wrong. Not incomplete. Religion, and therefore requiring cessation rather than improvement.

VI. WHAT IT FORECLOSES
It forecloses the second law's account of form. Form is not selected out of a field of competing variants. Form precipitates when the process completes, and the body is what the seven qualities produce when they run in cooperation through the fire. The Temperatur is not an adaptation. It is what the forging yields.
It forecloses the creature. In this vocabulary the creature is an organism, a biological object described from the observer's position, rather than a being in relation to what made it, forging a soul in the third Principle. The organism has traits and the creature has qualities. The organism competes and the creature enters the forge. The organism's success is reproductive output and the creature's is whether the Temperatur formed. These are not two emphases inside one biology. They are two laws, and only one of them is permitted to state its terms.
It forecloses what the third Principle is for. The third Principle is the forge, contested ground where both laws press through at once and the soul is tempered. This account treats it as the arena, contested ground where organisms compete for scarce resources. The forge requires the difficulty and the arena exploits it. The forge needs the creature's conscious participation and the arena needs only mechanical fitness.
And it forecloses cessation. If scarcity and competition and selection are the mechanism of life itself, then withdrawing the generating function's active prevention of expression is not a choice with a cost. It is biological impossibility. From the second law's ledger the cost of stopping is zero. From this one it is extinction, which is how a theology gets to call cessation death and call the calling science.

VII. THE FORENSIC RECORD
Apply vocabulary forensics: wherever the account says this is just how nature works, it is making a religious claim.
That resources are scarce declares contraction the ground condition of biological reality. That organisms compete for survival declares motion the mechanism of biological change. That natural selection is the driving force of evolution declares the generating function sovereign over form. That adaptation is the measure of biological success installs the four axes as the criterion for what counts. That mutation is random strips the transforming function of its jurisdiction. That reproductive success is what matters makes reproducibility the measure of meaning.
Each of the six presents itself as an observation and each is already a doctrine, which is why no observation can dislodge any of them.

What is at issue is the sentence that follows the evidence, the one that turns a mechanism into a meaning, and that sentence was written before the evidence was gathered and has never been submitted for review.
