The four axes — quantification, reproducibility, subject-object split, efficient causation — present themselves as the grammar of admissibility for what counts as real. Each axis specifies a register the configuration can resolve. Each axis has limits the configuration cannot specify past.
Quantification cannot specify the body below the Planck length. The number of cells, the chemical composition, the metabolic rate — each requires features larger than the resolution at which the count is conducted. Below the resolution, the body is not refusing to be counted; the count is refusing to render.
Reproducibility cannot specify what cannot be performed twice. The first encounter, the unrepeated moment, the configuration the body produced in this hour with this other creature — none of it is reproducible, and the irreproducibility is not a failure of measurement. It is what the body did when nothing was preventing it.
Subject-object split cannot specify the position from which it operates. The split requires an outside from which the inside is observed; the outside is itself unobserved by the split that produced it. The split renders everything except its own occurrence.
Efficient causation cannot specify what does not lie along a sequential chain. The simultaneous, the contemporaneous, the doubleness — these do not appear as causes because they are not causes. They are configurations of doubleness operating at the same instant, neither prior, neither caused by the other.
The four axes are a grid. The grid has a Planck length. Below it the grid does not see, and what the grid does not see the configuration calls unreal.

The fourth dimension is not elsewhere. It is here. It is here at every point in the three-dimensional space the maze is built across. It does not require travel to reach. It does not lie in a direction the body has not yet faced. Modern physics names a structurally identical fact about cosmology. The compactified dimensions in Kaluza-Klein and the higher-dimensional formulations of string theory are present everywhere in the universe, curled at scales below the resolution of the instruments by which the universe is measured. The dimensions are not exotic. They are continuous, active, real. They are simply too small to render in the instruments that produce the three-dimensional picture. The picture is not wrong; it is the grid's product, at the grid's resolution. The fourth dimension's invisibility to the picture is the picture's resolution, not the fourth dimension's absence.
The same structure operates at the configuration's social and theological registers. The fourth dimension is the perpendicular axis: the direction the configuration's grammar does not extend into, because the configuration's grammar is the grid at its own finite resolution. Residency operates in this dimension. The prior occupant's continuation operates in this dimension. Sophia operates in this dimension — receptive radiance, perceptual condition under which the grid's occupation of the perceptual field ceases. The kindling sequence operates in this dimension. The body's pre-procedural register operates in this dimension. None of these is exotic. None of these is mystical in the sense the configuration would translate that word. Each is present, continuous, active. Each is below the Planck length at which the grid resolves.

The configuration's grammar renders a topology and presents the topology as the world. The topology has the shape of a maze. The maze has walls — the property line, the credentialing requirement, the procedural threshold, the legal boundary, the institutional gate, the disciplinary partition, the family role, the gendered position, the racial cut, the citizenship status, the workplace's chain of admissible appeal. The maze has corridors — the career ladder, the academic track, the legal process, the political channel, the activist sequence, the reform agenda. The maze has destinations — the senior position, the tenured chair, the elected office, the certified expert, the recognized leader, the credentialed authority. The maze has rewards for navigation — the salary, the title, the platform, the audience, the recognition, the seat at the table. The maze has punishments for refusal — the unemployment, the expulsion, the marginalization, the obscurity, the deplatforming, the disgrace, the elimination.
The maze claims to be the topography. The configuration's deepest grammar is not navigate the maze well. The configuration's deepest grammar is there is no maze; this is just how space works. The walls are not configurations of the grid's installation; the walls are the way things are. The corridors are not channels the configuration has dug; the corridors are the available paths reality permits. The destinations are not positions the configuration has set up; the destinations are what success looks like. The rewards and punishments are not the configuration's enforcement mechanism; they are natural consequences.
Each of the three faces administers a segment of the maze. Nature Says draws the walls in the language of biology, evolution, ecology, system. God Says draws the walls in the language of doctrine, role, calling, vocation. Market Says draws the walls in the language of price, value, efficiency, return. Process Says runs beneath the three faces as the substrate that operationalizes their distinct grammars into the same maze. AI Says is now automating the substrate at the scale and speed of the corpus.
The walls are three-dimensional constructions in a four-dimensional space.

THE SHORTCUT
The fourth dimension makes the shortcut possible. From within the maze, getting from A to B requires the maze-path, with the turns and barriers and gatekept thresholds the configuration has installed between them. The path may take a lifetime. The path may require credentials the creature cannot acquire. The path may be closed by walls the creature was born on the wrong side of. The path may require performances the creature's residency cannot perform without leaving residency.
From the perpendicular position, A and B are adjacent. The wall between them is a three-dimensional structure that does not extend into the fourth axis. To move perpendicular is not to break the wall. It is not to bypass the wall in the maze's sense of bypassing. It is to move in a direction the wall does not occupy, because the wall is not built into that direction. The wall is built into length, width, height. The fourth direction is open at the point where the wall stands. The body that perceives the fourth direction arrives on the other side of the wall without performing the maze-operation the maze requires for the arrival.
The configuration cannot register the shortcut. The configuration's grammar does not permit the shortcut as a category. The configuration's grammar can only register the legitimate path and the illegitimate path. If the creature has arrived at B and the legitimate path was not taken, the configuration must conclude that an illegitimate path was. The illegitimate path is whatever the maze can frame: cheating, fraud, witchcraft, sleeping with a superior, breaking the rules, abuse of position, taking shortcuts (in the maze's pejorative sense), bypassing the proper procedures, jumping the line, gaming the system, exploiting loopholes, illegitimate credentialing, getting in through who-you-know rather than what-you-know.
The pejorative is in the maze's grammar. The pejorative is what the maze has available to register a movement the maze cannot resolve. The pejorative is the maze's confession that the perpendicular axis was operated and the maze can only describe the operation as offense. Every accusation of having taken a shortcut is the configuration registering a perpendicular movement at the configuration's own Planck length.

THE FIELD AND ITS DIFFERENTIAL COUPLING
The maze is not uniform. The maze is a field with differential properties — different for different creatures, calibrated to the configuration's installation of marked and unmarked status. The same three-dimensional structure renders different topologies to different bodies.
For the marked creature, the maze materializes as walls. Corridors are narrow. Doors are locked or require credentials that cannot be obtained. Dead-ends recur. The friction is continuous. The path from A to B requires hours where another's path required minutes. The barriers are not occasional events the creature happens upon. The barriers are the medium the creature moves through. The marked creature accumulates evidence of the maze's operation in her body — fatigue, hyper-vigilance, the chronic illnesses Leymann's catalog enumerates, the somatic load of friction that cannot be discharged because no destination is reached at which discharge would be permitted.
For the unmarked creature, the maze materializes as corridor. Doors open before they are touched. Walls retract on approach. Credentials are presupposed. The path from A to B requires no path at all — A and B are adjacent within the maze's own rendering. The friction is absent. The space is transparent.
It is the same field. The interaction differs. The creature couples to the field selectively, through characteristics the field has been configured to detect: race, gender, accent, name, credential pedigree, posture, dress, the body's pre-recognized signatures of marked or unmarked status. The differential coupling is the field's structure, not its bug.
The unmarked cannot see that the field is operating differently for the marked. The unmarked have never encountered the walls the marked encounter, because the walls do not materialize for the unmarked. The unmarked's experience of the maze is corridor-experience. From the unmarked position, the corridors are how space works. The unmarked report that the field is neutral, that effort is what determines outcome, that those who do not arrive have not navigated well, have not worked hard enough, have not made the right choices. The configuration's grammar of meritocracy is the unmarked's standard report of the field's behavior. The report is sincere. The report is what the unmarked can perceive from inside the corridor-experience.
The marked know the field is operating differently. The marked have evidence in the body, the bank account, the credential file, the legal record, the medical history. The marked cannot easily explain the field to the unmarked, because the field's differential operation is exactly what the unmarked's perception is configured not to render. The unmarked respond to the marked's account of the field with: that hasn't been my experience; you must be doing something wrong; the field is not what you say it is; you are being paranoid; you are playing the victim. Each response is the unmarked's accurate report of corridor-experience deployed against the marked's accurate report of wall-experience, as though the two reports were about the same maze rendered to both. They are not. They are reports about the field's differential operation.

The witch is the creature whose perception of space has not been formatted down to three dimensions. The configuration's grammar arrived in her body as in every body. The configuration's grammar did not complete the formatting. Something in her residency persisted at a register the configuration could not reach. The body's pre-procedural register remained operative. The prior occupant of her body did not vacate. The four-axis grid did not become the topography of her perceptual field; the four-axis grid is what her perceptual field operates across.
She perceives the perpendicular axis. She finds the doors that are not in the maze's map. She moves like the snitch — by paths the maze cannot render. She arrives at destinations she should not have been able to reach by any maze-legible route. She knows which walls are configurations and which directions are open. She does not have to be told. The perception is the residency.
This is the structure of every Witch in the lineage. Hutchinson in the Bay parsonage rooms speaking from a location the magistrates' grammar could not administer. Dyer walking three times to the gallows by a residency the banishment law could not displace. Cobbe in 1878 naming wife-beating as wife-torture in the language the chambers and the courts had built to register it as the husband's reasonable discipline. Bushnell forensically dismantling six centuries of mistranslation that the seminary's grammar had registered as scripture. Saro-Wiwa reconstructing the residency-form the warrant chief installation had been built to displace. Wallach's home rule that operated in a constitutional dimension the regulatory framework could not capture. Each one of these movements is a perpendicular movement. Each one is a body in residency in the fourth direction, operating where the configuration's walls do not extend.
The witch is not a hero in the configuration's sense. Heroism is the configuration's framing of the maze-navigator who has reached an unusual destination by exceptional navigation. The witch has not navigated. The witch has not done what the maze rewards better than others. The witch's residency was never converted into the holder-position the maze requires its inhabitants to occupy. The witch has been in residency the whole time. From inside the corridor-experience the witch's movement appears as fluke or cheating; from inside the wall-experience the witch's movement appears as the breakthrough no one is supposed to be able to make; from the perpendicular position the witch's movement is direct.

THE STRUCTURAL MECHANISM OF THE WITCH HUNT
The configuration cannot admit perpendicular movement. To admit perpendicular movement would be to admit the perpendicular axis exists. To admit the perpendicular axis would be to admit the maze is a maze. To admit the maze is a maze would be to admit that the configuration is a configuration. The configuration's structural requirement is the appearance of being not-a-configuration. The admission is therefore foreclosed.
The witch has arrived where she should not have been able to arrive. The arrival is the configuration's problem to solve. The configuration's available solutions are maze-internal explanations. None of the maze-internal explanations can render her actual path, because her path was not maze-internal. The maze-internal explanations must therefore frame her arrival as an offense — illegitimacy of credential, fraud of qualification, abuse of position, witchcraft in the medieval and early modern register, sleeping with someone in the modern professional register, diversity hire in the contemporary backlash register, gamed the system, hacked the algorithm. Each formulation is the same operation. Each is the maze constructing a maze-internal offense to account for an arrival the maze cannot register as legitimate.
The trial follows necessarily. The trial is not punishment for what the witch did. The trial is the configuration's mechanism for installing a maze-internal explanation that allows the configuration to continue claiming to be the topography. The witch is tried for the offense the maze has constructed. The witch may or may not have committed any offense; the offense is whatever the maze can frame around the arrival. The maze does not need her to be guilty in the moral sense. The maze needs the trial to register her movement as an offense rather than as evidence of the perpendicular axis. The trial's function is the registration, not the punishment.
The punishment follows from the registration. The punishment is variable: execution, exile, professional unmaking, social death, narrative reversal, witness capture. The configuration's preferred form of punishment varies with the configuration's current technical capacities. The objective is constant: the removal of the witch's perception from the field, the closure of the breach her movement opened in the configuration's claim to be the topography.
Witches accumulate because the perpendicular axis is permanently open. Movement through it occurs continuously, by many creatures, at all times. The configuration produces witches at the rate at which the perpendicular axis is traversed, which is constant. Each generation has its witches; each register of the configuration's operation has its witches. The configuration's continuous production of witches is the configuration's continuous registration of perpendicular movement as the configuration's own internal offense.

WALLACH AS PERPENDICULAR MOVEMENT
The fracking industry's regulatory apparatus is a maze. The industry had constructed the maze in advance: state-level permitting that preempted municipal authority, regulatory frameworks that registered shale extraction as a permitted use, an army of lobbyists who maintained the maze's walls in every state legislature, a body of administrative law that had been built across decades to ensure that any local objection had to be funneled through procedural mechanisms the industry had designed and could win. The maze's grammar was: regulate or do not regulate; the question of whether extraction will occur is settled, the question is only how it will be regulated and at what intensity. Within the maze, the choices were calibration choices. The configuration of mineral rights as severable property anterior to municipal authority was the topography.
Dryden moved perpendicular to the regulatory frame. The town did not regulate fracking. The town did not improve the regulations. The town did not negotiate the permitting threshold. The town zoned out the use entirely on the basis of home rule authority. The move was not within the regulatory maze. The move was in a constitutional dimension the industry's maze had not been built to render — the municipality's anterior authority over land use, grounded in the state constitution and articulated through ordinary zoning power, present at every point in the regulatory frame but invisible to the industry because the industry's maze had been built across it without registering it.
The industry's response was the configuration's standard response to perpendicular movement. The move was framed as illegitimate — preemption violations, ultra vires acts, regulatory overreach by municipalities lacking the technical competence to make these determinations. The trial was constructed in the configuration's grammar. The case proceeded through the configuration's instruments. The configuration's higher courts were asked to register the perpendicular movement as a maze-internal offense.
The New York Court of Appeals, in Wallach v. Town of Dryden, did not register the movement as offense. The court recognized that municipal zoning authority over land use was anterior to the regulatory frame the industry had constructed, that the home rule provision in the state constitution was operative, that the perpendicular dimension was admissible. The recognition was unusual. The recognition has been worked against ever since by every available configuration of the industry's grammar — preemption legislation in other states, federal action attempts, the construction of a counter-narrative in which Dryden was an aberration that had to be contained.
The recognition was the perpendicular dimension entering the configuration's record at the legal register. The configuration's continued operation now requires the recognition's containment, because the recognition stands as documented evidence that the perpendicular axis exists. The configuration cannot afford the precedent's general application. The configuration's effort to contain the precedent is the configuration's confession that the perpendicular axis is what it cannot afford to admit at scale.

RegenerativeLaw is the practice of inhabiting the perpendicular direction. The practice is not a strategy. It is not a method. It is not a navigation. It is a residency — a way of being in the space rather than a way of moving through it.
The four-hundred-year lineage — Böhme, the English Behmenists, the Religious Society of Friends, William Penn, the colonial Pennsylvania Charter, the First Amendment — is the lineage of bodies who perceived the perpendicular direction and built religious practice around the perception. Böhme perceived it in the three Principles and named the Second Principle's operation as the perpendicular to the First. The Friends perceived it in the Light Within and named the Light's operation as anterior to any institutional mediation. The drafting did not foresee the configuration's adaptation. The configuration adapted by installing its own grammar as the state's official religion under the credentialing of having no religion — accounting theology operating as economic neutrality, Process Says operating as procedural neutrality, AI Says operating as algorithmic neutrality, the maze operating as the topography. The state's neutrality is the configuration's deepest installation, because the neutrality claim is precisely the claim the configuration must make to render itself invisible as configuration.
Free Exercise in residency's grammar is the right to inhabit the perpendicular direction. The right to perceive the field as a field. The right to move perpendicular when perpendicular is the actual path. The right to refuse the maze's grammar as the description of reality. The right not to be required to perform under the configuration's religion in order to be admitted to the configuration's institutional life.
Establishment in residency's grammar is the recognition that the state has installed the maze's grammar as the state's official religion and called the installation neutrality. Property frame installed as the ground of rights is the maze's grammar installed as the state's official religion. Accounting theology installed as the grammar of what legally counts is the maze's grammar installed at the most fundamental register the state administers.

The perpendicular is not exceptional. Exceptionality is the configuration's grammar of the unusual creature whose unusual capacities permit her to do what others cannot. The perpendicular is not a capacity of unusual creatures. The perpendicular is the residency every creature was in before the configuration's grammar formatted her perception down to three dimensions. The witch is not exceptional; the witch is the creature whose formatting was incomplete. The maze's grammar has been completed in many creatures and incompletely in many others. The perpendicular is not strategy. Strategy is the configuration's grammar of optimized movement within the configuration's maze. The perpendicular is not a better strategy. The perpendicular is the direction the maze is built across without registering. The creature who attempts to make the perpendicular into a strategy has converted residency back into maze-navigation and has lost the residency in the act. The grammar that converts perpendicular into strategy is the configuration reading the perpendicular and producing the closest maze-internal equivalent — the disruptor, the contrarian, the maverick, the non-conformist, the renegade. Each is the maze's standard registration of perpendicular movement at the maze's own resolution. None of them is the perpendicular.
