Manifest Destiny

How Trespass Theology Wore Providence

The Doctrine of Discovery installed the cut. The papal bulls of the 1450s and 1490s authorized the architecture's posting authority over what the architecture had not yet entered. Manifest Destiny is what happened when that authorization was translated from Roman vestments into Protestant democratic vernacular. The architecture is identical. The vocabulary is local. The new admissibility conditions name the same operation.

The papal bulls were foreign, Catholic, attached to distant monarchies. American operators required a vestment the new Republic could wear. Manifest Destiny supplied it. The Stake in the ground was no longer placed by Roman authority — it was placed by divine will expressing itself through the American experiment. The cut remained identical. The story told about the cut changed everything about how the architecture's operators experienced performing it.

The architecture had learned what the 1871 Pivot would later make explicit: vestments must be calibrated to the legal and theological environment they operate in. The papal bull would not serve a republic suspicious of Rome. Providence would. The architecture changed the column heading and continued the operation.

The Exodus Inversion

The Hebrew scripture renders slaves liberated from Egypt, wandering toward promised land. Powerless becoming free. Divine preference for the oppressed. Covenant formed in wilderness. The architecture took this narrative and inverted its geometry while preserving its shape.

The Americans who had never been slaves became the Israelites. The Indigenous peoples who had lived on their land for millennia became the Canaanites. The promised land was already inhabited, and the inhabitants became obstacle to divine promise. Same narrative shape. Opposite operation.

This is the doubleness operating through scripture itself. Two faces of one architecture: liberation as the recorded narrative, conquest as the architecture's deployment of the narrative. The architecture crystallizes one face as the whole — the Israelites entering their promised land — and forgets the other face, the inhabitants whose displacement the narrative requires. The reader inside the architecture cannot see the inversion because the architecture's books are not calibrated to record it. The page balances. The story closes. The settlement proceeds.

What the architecture performed on Exodus, it had already performed on the cross. The crucifixion was Rome's violence against a Jewish prophet. The cross burned by Klan operators is American violence against those Manifest Destiny marked as Canaanite — Indigenous peoples, Black Americans, anyone whose presence disrupts the promised-land narrative. Same shape. Opposite operation. The symbol designed to remember imperial violence becomes the symbol deployed to perform imperial violence. The architecture cannot post the inversion as inversion because the architecture is the inversion.

This is the structural vulnerability in any liberation narrative. The architecture can always claim to be the liberated. The conquerors can always cast themselves as the oppressed. The Confederate theologians cited Exodus extensively. The prophetic tradition can be deployed to authorize empire. The crucifixion can be deployed to authorize violence — we must crucify the crucifiers. Each capture performs the same operation. The architecture takes the narrative form designed to register the prior occupant's experience and reassigns it to the architecture's own position. The form persists. The position inverts.

The Permission Structure

Manifest Destiny converted what would otherwise register as crime into what registers as obedience. Every treaty broken was broken in God's name. Treaties were made in bad faith and then broken in better faith — the faith that God's plan supersedes human agreement. Every village burned was burned for divine glory. The violence was not violence but preparation, clearing the land for civilization, for Christianity, for the fulfillment of prophecy. Every child stolen was stolen for divine salvation. The boarding schools — Kill the Indian, save the man — were not cultural extermination but rescue. The separation of children from language, family, ceremony was gift. The violence was love.

This is the architecture at apotheosis: the wound administered as medicine, the theft performed as generosity, the murder enacted as salvation. The doubleness at maximum forgery — the violence on one face, the love on the other, the love crystallized as the whole, the violence forgotten in the column the architecture cannot admit. The operator delivering the violence experiences delivering love. The recipient receiving the violence is read by the architecture as recipient of love. The architecture's books balance. The page closes. The operation continues.

The boarding schools target what the architecture must eliminate to complete its operation: dimensional memory. The Doctrine of Discovery created legal architecture — bureaucratic, operating through titles and surveys. Indigenous sovereignty became legally inadmissible but could still be carried by those who remembered the prior occupation. Manifest Destiny moved against the carriers themselves. By making conquest sacred, it made alternative relationship to land unthinkable. Not just illegal — unimaginable.

The boarding schools operated precisely here. Steal children. Forbid language. Punish ceremony. The objective was not civilization but the elimination of those who could carry the prior occupation's grammar. Adults might remember. Children can be reformatted. The prior occupant can be displaced not by erasing the territory's residents but by ensuring no one remains who can read in the prior occupant's register. This is why the architecture targets children. The adoptio operating at generational scale. I made you installed at the level of the child's first language, before the child can carry forward what would have been her ground.

Founder's Theology

The architecture wounded Christianity itself. A faith that authorizes genocide cannot witness to the executed criminal whose death it claims to center. A faith that takes the side of empire against the dispossessed has inverted its own origin operation while insisting on continuity. This is Founder's Theology— the architecture's most successful capture of a religion that began as the prior occupant's testimony against the architecture.

Founder's Theology largely does not register this as wound. The architecture has absorbed the inversion so completely that Founder's Theology feels like Christianity. The conquest feels like mission. The violence feels like love. The grammar that would identify the inversion as inversion has been disabled by the inversion itself.

The wound bleeds through anyway. Declining church membership. The rise of spiritual but not religious. The growing recognition that something went fundamentally wrong. These are not signs of secularization. They are signs of the body registering what the architecture has been administering. The dimensional sensing that what claims to be the faith has become its operational opposite.

What the cross was designed to register — kenosis, divine self-emptying, power through surrender — was the prior occupant's testimony against the architecture's grammar. The architecture took the symbol that named its own operation as crime and reassigned it as authorization. The cross that marked vulnerable self-emptying became the cross burned on lawns to terrorize. The grammar that would recognize the weaponized cross as anti-cross has been disabled by the architecture that made Christianity and conquest synonymous within Settler Christianity's register.

Some are working to restore what the architecture displaced. Indigenous Christians from decolonized theology. Liberation traditions that name the inversion explicitly. Communities willing to lose Christianity as identity to recover something that might actually attend to the executed criminal whose testimony the architecture absorbed. These remain marginal because Founder's Theology cannot critique Founder's Theology without ceasing to be Founder's Theology. The architecture defends itself by being the conditions of intelligibility within which any critique would have to be rendered.

Continuous Operation

Manifest Destiny is not historical. The architecture continues. It operates now in vestments calibrated to the current legal and rhetorical environment.

The border wall is Manifest Destiny. The land discovered must be protected from those who would reverse the discovery. The Stake must be maintained. Illegal immigration is Manifest Destiny in operational form: those who cross boundaries the Doctrine created are illegal because the Doctrine's grammar is still operating. The borders drawn by conquest are naturalized as the border — as if it existed prior to the cut that produced it. The architecture cannot admit that the border's prior nonexistence is a fact the architecture's books were calibrated to occlude.

Resource extraction is Manifest Destiny in commercial form. Oil and gas and minerals beneath land the Doctrine discovered belong to the discoverers' descendants. The standing rock beneath the Dakota Access Pipeline is Canaanite land; the Canaanites must yield to the architecture's plan for American energy independence. The displacement of the prior occupant is performed continuously by the architecture's books, which post the resources as the discoverers' assets and refuse the entries that would render the displacement.

American exceptionalism is Manifest Destiny in self-justifying form. The nation is exceptional because divine providence destined it. The destiny is manifest because the nation is exceptional. This is circular logic that cannot be broken from inside because breaking it would require admitting the Stake still in the ground — and the architecture's grammar has no position from which the Stake can be named without the namer's standing being already calibrated by the Stake.

Each contemporary vestment is the same architecture performing the same operation under the legal and rhetorical conditions currently available. The Klansman, the Manifest Destiny preacher, the border-wall advocate, the pipeline executive, the colorblind constitutional jurist, the anti-DEI litigator are not different ideologies. They are the same architecture surfacing under successive admissibility conditions. The vestments are sincere within their own register. The architecture is continuous beneath them.

The Path the Architecture Forecloses

There is no path through Founder's Theology to some uncorrupted Christianity on the other side. The corruption is not contamination. It is architecture. Christian Nationalism was built on Manifest Destiny foundations. The theology, the institutions, the worship practices, the biblical interpretation — formatted by the conquest grammar.

Reform is the architecture's most efficient self-preservation. The reformer who proposes to clean Founder's Theology of its conquest grammar is operating within the conquest grammar. The reformed product remains Founder's Theologyy with a fresh column heading. The architecture posts the reform as evidence of its own self-correction. The page balances. The page closes. The operation continues.

The Establishment cannot be reformed at the architectural level because reform is one of the architecture's functions. What the Establishment cannot absorb is its own cessation — the withdrawal of the architecture from the position from which posting authority is exercised. This is not reform. This is the closure of the books in the second sense: shut, no longer the operation. Not balanced and closed but shut. The withdrawal is field condition, not product. No amount of constitutional, theological, or institutional action within Settler Christianity can produce its cessation because each such action is performed in Founder's Theology's grammar.

The prior occupant continues. The land remembers what the settlers forgot. The dimensional knowing the boarding schools were calibrated to extinguish persists in those who refused to perform their reformatting completely, in those whom the reformatting failed to fully reach, in those who carried what the architecture cannot post into registers the architecture cannot read. Indigenous sovereignty is not a claim against the architecture's authority. It is the prior occupation that the architecture's authority was calibrated to displace and could not actually displace. The architecture's grammar cannot admit this because admitting it dissolves the column from which posting is authorized. The architecture's failure to admit it does not change what is the case.

The Establishment continues. The prior occupant continues. The Law of the Books cannot post the prior occupant. The prior occupant was prior to the books.
