The Doctrine of Discovery installed the cut. The papal bulls of the 1450s and 1490s authorized posting authority over what the occupation had not yet entered. Manifest Destiny is what happened when that authorization was translated out of Roman vestments and into Protestant democratic vernacular.
The bulls were foreign, Catholic, attached to distant monarchies, and American operators required a vestment the new Republic could wear. Manifest Destiny supplied it. The stake in the ground was no longer placed by Roman authority. It was placed by divine will expressing itself through the American experiment. The cut remained identical, and the story told about the cut changed everything about how the operators experienced performing it.
Vestments are calibrated to the legal and theological conditions they have to operate in. The papal bull would not serve a republic suspicious of Rome. Providence would.

THE EXODUS INVERSION
The Hebrew scripture renders slaves liberated from Egypt, wandering towards a promised land. The powerless becoming free, divine preference for the oppressed, covenant formed in wilderness. The occupation took that narrative and inverted its geometry while preserving its shape.
Americans who had never been slaves became the Israelites. Indigenous peoples who had lived on their land for millennia became the Canaanites. The promised land was already inhabited, and the inhabitants became the obstacle to divine promise. Same narrative shape, opposite operation.
This is the doubleness running through scripture itself: liberation as the recorded narrative, conquest as the deployment of the narrative. One face is crystallized as the whole, the Israelites entering their promised land, and the other face is lost, the inhabitants whose displacement the narrative requires. The reader inside the configuration cannot see the inversion, because the books are not calibrated to record it. The page balances. The story closes. The settlement proceeds.

THE SAME OPERATION ON THE CROSS
What was performed on Exodus had already been performed on the cross. The crucifixion was Rome's violence against a Jewish prophet. The cross burned by Klan operators is American violence against those Manifest Destiny marked as Canaanite: Indigenous peoples, Black Americans, anyone whose presence disrupts the promised-land narrative. The symbol designed to remember imperial violence becomes the symbol deployed to perform it.
This is the vulnerability in any liberation narrative, and it is not incidental. The occupier can always claim to be the liberated. The conquerors can always cast themselves as the oppressed. Confederate theologians cited Exodus extensively. The prophetic tradition can be turned to authorize empire, and the crucifixion can be turned to authorize violence: we must crucify the crucifiers. Each capture performs the same operation, taking a narrative form built to register the prior occupant's experience and reassigning it to the occupier's position. The form persists and the position inverts.

HOW THE CRIME BECAME OBEDIENCE
Manifest Destiny converted what would otherwise register as crime into what registers as obedience.
Every treaty broken was broken in God's name. Treaties were made in bad faith and then broken in better faith, the faith that God's plan supersedes human agreement. Every village burned was burned for divine glory, and the violence was not violence but preparation: clearing the land for civilization, for Christianity, for the fulfillment of prophecy. Every child taken was taken for divine salvation. The boarding schools, kill the Indian, save the man, were not extermination but rescue, and the separation of children from language and family and ceremony was a gift.
This is the wound administered as medicine, the theft performed as generosity, the murder enacted as salvation. The doubleness at maximum forgery: violence on one face, love on the other, the love crystallized as the whole and the violence entered in a column that cannot be admitted. The operator delivering the violence experiences delivering love. The recipient is read as the recipient of love. The books balance and the page closes.

WHY THE SCHOOLS TOOK CHILDREN
The boarding schools targeted what had to be eliminated for the operation to complete: dimensional memory.
The Doctrine of Discovery built a legal instrument, bureaucratic, operating through titles and surveys. Indigenous sovereignty became legally inadmissible but could still be carried by those who remembered the prior occupation. Manifest Destiny moved against the carriers themselves. By making conquest sacred it made any other relationship to land unthinkable, and not merely illegal.
Steal children. Forbid language. Punish ceremony. The objective was not civilization but the elimination of everyone who could still read in the prior occupant's register, and children were the target because adults might remember and children can be reformatted. The prior occupant is displaced not by clearing the territory's residents but by ensuring no one is left who can read the ground the way it was read. I made you, installed at the level of a child's first language, before the child can carry forward what would have been her own ground.

FOUNDER'S THEOLOGY
The occupation wounded Christianity itself. A faith that authorizes genocide cannot witness to the executed criminal whose death it claims to center, and a faith that takes the side of empire against the dispossessed has inverted its own origin while insisting on continuity. That inversion is Founder's Theology: the occupation's most successful capture of a religion that began as the prior occupant's testimony against it.
Founder's Theology largely does not register this as a wound, because the inversion has been absorbed so completely that it feels like Christianity. The conquest feels like mission. The violence feels like love. The grammar that would identify the inversion has been disabled by the inversion itself.
The wound bleeds through anyway. Declining membership, the rise of spiritual but not religious, the growing recognition that something went fundamentally wrong. These are not signs of secularization. They are the body registering what has been administered to it.
What the cross was built to register, kenosis, divine self-emptying, power through surrender, was the prior occupant's testimony against the occupier's grammar. The symbol that named the occupation's operation as a crime was reassigned as its authorization, and the cross that marked vulnerable self-emptying became the cross burned on lawns to terrorize.

CONTINUOUS OPERATION
Manifest Destiny is not historical. It operates now, in vestments calibrated to the current legal and rhetorical conditions.
The border wall is Manifest Destiny. The land discovered must be protected from those who would reverse the discovery, and the stake must be maintained. Illegal immigration is the doctrine's grammar still running: those who cross boundaries the Doctrine created are illegal because the Doctrine is still operating, and the borders drawn by conquest are naturalized as the border, as though it existed prior to the cut that produced it.
Resource extraction is Manifest Destiny in commercial form. Oil and gas and minerals beneath land the Doctrine discovered belong to the discoverers' descendants. The rock beneath the pipeline is Canaanite ground and the Canaanites must yield to the plan for American energy independence. The books post the resources as the discoverers' assets and refuse the entries that would record the displacement.
American exceptionalism is Manifest Destiny in self-justifying form. The nation is exceptional because providence destined it, and the destiny is manifest because the nation is exceptional. The circle cannot be broken from inside it, because breaking it would require naming the stake still in the ground, and the namer's own standing has already been calibrated by the stake.
The Klansman, the Manifest Destiny preacher, the border-wall advocate, the pipeline executive, the colorblind constitutional jurist and the anti-DEI litigator are not different ideologies. They are the same operation surfacing under successive admissibility conditions. The vestments are sincere within their own register.

WHAT REFORM CANNOT REACH
There is no path through Founder's Theology to some uncorrupted Christianity on the other side. The corruption is not contamination, it is construction. Christian Nationalism was built on Manifest Destiny foundations: the theology, the institutions, the worship practices and the biblical interpretation, all formatted by the conquest grammar.
Reform is the occupation's most efficient self-preservation. The reformer who proposes to clean Founder's Theology of its conquest grammar is operating inside the conquest grammar, and the reformed product is Founder's Theology with a fresh column heading. The reform is then posted as evidence of self-correction. The page balances, the page closes, the operation continues.
The Establishment cannot be reformed at the level of its construction, because reform is one of its own functions. What it cannot absorb is its own cessation: the withdrawal of the occupation from the position from which posting authority is exercised. That is not reform. It is the closure of the books in the second sense, shut and no longer the operation, not balanced and closed. The withdrawal is a field condition and not a product, and no constitutional or theological or institutional action taken inside Founder's Theology's grammar can produce it.

The prior occupant continues. The land holds what the settlers let go of. The dimensional knowing the boarding schools were calibrated to extinguish persists in those who refused to perform their reformatting completely, in those the reformatting failed to reach, in those who carried what could not be posted into registers that could not be read.
Indigenous sovereignty is not a claim against the occupier's authority. It is the prior occupation that the authority was calibrated to displace and could not actually displace. The grammar cannot admit this, because admitting it dissolves the column from which posting is authorized, and the failure to admit it does not change what is the case.
The Law of the Books cannot post the prior occupant. The prior occupant was prior to the books.

RegenerativeLaw is a religion in the direct-encounter Protestant tradition, carrying a documented four-century lineage through Böhme, the Behmenists, the Friends, and Penn, and it diagnoses trespass theology as an establishment of religion. Its exercise consists substantially in refusal: it shelters the conscientious refusal of performed subordination as religious exercise. This entry states sincere religious belief concerning matters of ultimate concern, protected under the First Amendment and, as to federal action, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, 42 U.S.C. § 2000bb.
