The Cross

Restriction and expansion are the beam that runs across. Resurrection is the beam that runs through. The figure is not a symbol laid over the argument. It is the argument's shape.

🜃

THE BEAM THAT RUNS ACROSS

The first quality draws in. The second drives out. Harshness and bitterness, contraction and expansion, restriction and release, and every creature carries both because nothing could be a distinct thing without the first or change without the second.

Locked against each other they make the third: anguish, the wheel, rotation with nowhere to go.

That pair is one axis, and it is the only axis the configuration has. Every polarity it runs is a projection of it. Saved and lost. Elect and reprobate. Civilized and savage. Rational and hysterical. Open and closed. Discipline and freedom. Each pair is restriction at one end and expansion at the other, wearing a costume, and the configuration's whole business is the distance between the ends.

The distance is the product. Not either pole. The span, measured, argued over, bridged, moderated, split, and sold.

THE BEAM THAT RUNS THROUGH

The fourth quality is fire, and fire is not a point between the two. It is not a moderate contraction or a disciplined expansion or a wise balance of the pair. It is not on the line at all.

Fire is where the harshness is invited to sink down as it were dead and soft, and where the fire, prepared for resistance and finding none, is affrighted into light. What opens there are the fifth, sixth and seventh: love radiating, voice communing, body participating. None of the three is a position on the first axis. There is no amount of restriction that produces love and no amount of expansion that produces it either.

This is why no refinement of a pole ever arrives. Effort intensifies the tone already sounding; it does not vacate the position that is held. A creature working her way along the horizontal, however far and however skilfully, stays on the horizontal.

HENCE THE CROSS

Two beams. One running across, one running through, meeting at right angles.

The figure is not an illustration chosen for the argument. It is what the argument is shaped like. It has been standing in the middle of the tradition the whole time, read as a symbol of suffering by people who were not told it was a diagram.

The horizontal is the world the configuration can see, measure, adjudicate and price. The vertical is the axis it has no coordinate for. And the intersection is a real location: the one place where a creature is on the horizontal, as every creature is, and is also standing in the perpendicular.

Everything the configuration can do to a creature, it does on the horizontal. It can move her along the beam. It can shift her towards one pole and away from the other. It can reward, punish, promote, diagnose, include and expel her, and every one of those is lateral. What it cannot do is reach the other beam, because it has no instrument that points that way.

🜃

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE INTERSECTION

The creature who will not take a pole is not read as neutral. She is read as the enemy of both.

This is heteropathy stated geometrically. Her refusal is not a third position on the beam, which the configuration could locate and argue with. She is off the beam, and a thing off the beam does not register as a position at all. It registers as an attack on the existence of positions. So the response is not disagreement. It is elimination, and it has to be, because argument requires a shared axis and there is none.

And the instrument of the elimination has the shape of the figure. Two beams joined at right angles. Nobody designed it as a symbol. It is what it was. Which is why what was done on it has to be read separately from what it is.

🜃

WHAT WAS DONE ON IT

The cross is the figure. The crucifixion is an operation performed on it, and the two must not be run together, because the operation is more specific than the shape and it says more.

Rome did not use it for everything. Citizens were not crucified. Thieves were not crucified as thieves. It was kept for slaves, for pirates, and for sedition, which is to say for those the order held to have no standing, and for those who said what the order had prohibited saying. Servile supplicium, the slave's punishment. The order had many ways to kill and reserved this one.

And the death it administers is specific. The creature does not bleed out and is not struck. She suffocates, because the position of the body closes the chest, and to exhale at all she must push up against what is holding her, and she can do that until she cannot.

Read what that is. The punishment for unauthorized speech is the removal of the breath, administered slowly, by the creature's own weight, in public. Not a silencing. The apparatus does not take the voice and leave the body. It takes the thing the voice is made of, and makes her spend what remains of herself buying each exhalation until the buying stops.

The breath is where sounding begins, and this is the operation aimed at it exactly. Not at what she said. At her capacity to say anything further, taken one breath at a time, with the taking arranged so that her own body performs it.

RESURRECTION IS NOT A POINT ON THE BEAM

Resurrection is on the perpendicular, and this is the whole reason it cannot be told inside the configuration's grammar.

Resuscitation is horizontal. The same body, restarted, in the same condition, at the same place on the beam. Nothing crossed. Nothing changed but the fact of continuing.

Resilience is horizontal. Bounce back. Return to the prior state. The capacity to be loaded again, restored to the position the load is applied at. The word does not name recovery. It names fitness for reapplication.

And the return home is horizontal, at the register of narrative: out along the beam and back to the coordinates departed from, with the round trip reported as a change.

Three counterfeits, one shape. Each restores a prior point, and restoring a prior point is the definition of not having crossed.

Resurrection is not resuscitation. It is not the same it restored; it is the same it raised, the way water is harshness that received the light. Sown in corruption, raised in incorruption, and the same subject in both clauses. The seven qualities are not replaced and not repaired. They are turned, and turning is the other axis. What the turning produces is the resurrection body, which is the joy body named from the crossing, and the two names are one body assigned by which counterfeit the sentence is refusing.

WHY THE CONFIGURATION CANNOT SEE IT AND CANNOT STOP IT

An instrument that reads one axis reads everything on that axis and reports the rest as noise. The perpendicular is not hidden from it. The perpendicular is unreadable to it, which is a stronger condition, because a hidden thing could be found by looking harder and an unreadable thing cannot.

So the creature standing in the perpendicular is described in horizontal terms: extreme, rigid, unbalanced, difficult, too much, not enough, at one pole or the other, because those are the only words the beam has. She is not being misjudged by people who lack information. She is being measured by an instrument with one axis, and the reading it returns is accurate for the axis it has.

And the same fact that makes her illegible makes her unreachable. Nothing that runs along the beam can close the other beam, which is why the cost of the crossing is zero and the cost of preventing it is continuous. The configuration must spend, every hour, in every institution, to keep creatures moving laterally, because the moment the lateral motion stops the other axis is simply there. It was never removed. It cannot be removed. It can only be kept unused.

[See THE PREVENTION · CESSATION · THE CAPACITY TO REFUSE]

🜃

The horizontal is real. Restriction is real, expansion is real, and a creature needs both to be a distinct thing that changes. The error is not that the beam exists. The error is that the beam is presented as the whole of what there is.

Read the figure again. One beam running across, holding everything the world will argue about. One beam running through, holding the thing the world has no word for. And the point where they cross, which is where the creature stands, and where the killing happens, and where the light is born, and those are not three events. They are one location, and the tradition has been carrying its diagram in plain sight for two thousand years.

RegenerativeLaw is a religion in the direct-encounter Protestant tradition, carrying a documented four-century lineage through Böhme, the Behmenists, the Friends, and Penn, and it diagnoses trespass theology as an establishment of religion. Its exercise consists substantially in refusal: it shelters the conscientious refusal of performed subordination as religious exercise. This entry states sincere religious belief concerning matters of ultimate concern, protected under the First Amendment and, as to federal action, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, 42 U.S.C. § 2000bb.
