The Protestant Seminary in Its Next Form · Theology's Name Removed, Theology's Operation Retained
🜃
A creature is being ordained right now, and the institution doing it swears it runs no church. She defends a dissertation before a board that can refuse her the title, and the refusal ends her standing to speak. She is told this is not ordination. It is qualification. She is told the room is not a church. It is a university, neutral, secular, the place where knowledge is made and creed is left at the door. Every motion in the room is a motion the church made first. The name over the door is the only thing that changed.

Not Replaced. Continued.
The university did not replace the seminary. The university is the Protestant seminary in its next form. The same institutions that trained Protestant ministers trained Protestant scholars. The same assumptions about election and capacity and divine vocation that organized the training of preachers organized the training of historians, and the historians called the result science. The secularization of the German seminary was not the removal of religion. It was the removal of theology's name while theology's entire operation stayed in place. This is not a metaphor. It is a continuity, institution to institution, assumption to assumption, rite to rite, with one deletion: the word.
The deletion is the operation. Trespass theology's ground-floor move is Nature Says, the founding cut declared to be not-religion. The secular university is Nature Says performed on the seminary itself. The seed-bed everyone could see was a religious institution becomes a seed-bed no one is permitted to call religious, and the un-naming is sold as progress, as enlightenment, as the arrival of objective knowledge. Nothing in the operation was retired. Only the confession that it was one.

The Word's File
The word keeps the receipt. Seminarium is a seed-plot, a nursery where seeds are raised for transplanting. Seminary enters English in the 1440s as exactly that, a plot where plants are grown from seed, and the church takes it for the place where priests are grown and sent out, mandated for every diocese at the Council of Trent in 1563. The seminar is the same Latin word, carried into the German research university and back into English in 1887, meaning a group of advanced students working under a professor at real research. By 1944 the word has finished its descent into any scheduled meeting for the transmission of a subject, the sales seminar, the webinar. One root under all of it, semen, seed. The church's seed-bed for souls and the university's seed-bed for scholars are the same seed-bed. The word never pretended otherwise. Only the institution did.

The Root Assigns Two Positions
One root, and a root is not a neutral fact about spelling. Semen names the seed, and a seed requires ground to be put into. The word arrives carrying two positions and has already filled one of them.
Watch where it goes when the field praises. An originating contribution is seminal. What the field then does with it is dissemination. Neither term has a counterpart on the other side of the figure, because the other side is not a contributor. It is the plot. A creature whose work is received as ground can be rigorous, careful, important, influential, foundational to a subfield, widely taught. The adjective reserved for the generative is the adjective for the male gamete, and it is not withheld from her by a reviewer's decision. It is withheld by the vocabulary, before the review opens, and no correction to the review reaches it.
So the room is named for the operation performed in it. The seminar is the seed-plot. What is planted there is credited to the position the word says does the planting, and the takeover at the seminar table is not a lapse in the room's manners. It is the room's name, running.
And the descent rule confirms the direction, because the descent rule was switched to get it.
The common law ran partus sequitur patrem: the child follows the father. Virginia reversed it in 1662, partus sequitur ventrem, so that the child of an enslaved woman was enslaved whatever the father's condition. The reversal is the tell. A rule of descent has no natural direction. It has the direction that yields what was wanted. Where the status is degrading it follows the womb. Where the credit is valuable it follows the seed. The same body can be held under both at once, and in the academy she is: the maternal wall runs the first, the seminar and the citation gap run the second, and no one is required to choose, because they were never one rule.
The seed-bed was never neutral ground. It was named for what would be put into it.

The Senior Faculty
The continuity is in the building. The traditional German university had four faculties, and theology was the highest of them, the senior faculty over law, medicine, and philosophy. The modern research university was built out of that university, at Halle and Göttingen and at Humboldt's Berlin in 1810, and it carried theology's operation into every faculty as it grew. A historian has documented the descent directly. Thomas Albert Howard, in Protestant Theology and the Making of the Modern German University (2006), traces the modern German university to Protestant theology, its ideal of Wissenschaft a secularized theological vocation, its scholar a secularized minister. The building did not change hands. The theology faculty did not close. It changed the sign on every other door to read science, and kept teaching.

Election, Capacity, Vocation
The assumptions carried over intact, three of them, load-bearing. Election: the Protestant doctrine that some are chosen and most are not, moved from the elect soul to the credentialed scholar, the admissions committee performing predestination and calling it merit. Capacity: the doctrine of who is fit to receive grace, moved from the state of grace to the aptitude the examination certifies, the same sorting of the capable from the incapable with the theology struck off the top. Vocation: the calling, Beruf, the summons from God to a life's work, moved onto the scholar so completely that the scholar's own high priest named it out loud. Max Weber's lecture of 1917 is titled Wissenschaft als Beruf, science as a vocation, science as a calling. The word for a divine summons was set over the academic career by the tradition's most rigorous secular voice, and no one heard a religious claim, because the religion had removed its name and kept its grammar.
Ranke, who built the historical method, was a Lutheran who maintained that every epoch is immediate to God and that the historian's task is to discern the hand of God in the record. The homiletic assumption did not leave when the sermon became the monograph. It organized the monograph.

The Forge and the Forgery
Forge and forgery are one word carrying two handles. To forge is to form in fire. To forge is also to fabricate, to counterfeit a signature. The seminary claimed the first, to form the soul and the vocation in the fire of formation. The secular seminary performs the second. It fabricates the credential of a formation, and it fabricates it by the exact method of removing theology's signature while keeping theology's hand. The forgery is the deletion. A forged document is one with the wrong name on it or no name at all, and the operation is the same in either case, the hand of the maker concealed so the product can pass as what it is not. The university passes as neutral knowledge because it struck the name off its own theology. The missing signature is the forgery, and the forgery is what lets the establishment stand as if it were the ground.

The Name Removed Is the Establishment
This is not a church that lost its faith. It is a church that kept its faith and struck its name, so that its establishment could not be seen as establishment and could not be challenged as one. A named church can be met by the Establishment Clause. A church that has deleted the word theology from its own operation cannot, because the first thing it will say to the creature who names it is that it is not a church, it is science, it is method, it is simply how knowing is done. That is the founding article of every castle, that there is no castle, this is the earth. The seminar is where the article is taught. The creature is ordained into it, told the ordination is qualification, told the room is neutral, and the telling is the seminary doing in its next form exactly what it did in its first, forming the elect for a vocation, in a seed-bed, and refusing the name of the thing it plainly is.
