Addiction logic is accumulation logic at the register of felt sense. One configuration runs both: a relief tied to a dose, a dose whose relief decays, a decay answered by increase. +1, +1, +1. In accumulation the demand is felt as health, as sense, as of course I want more, and the creature is congratulated for it. In addiction the same demand is felt as compulsion: the creature knows something is wrong, feels the loop close, watches her own hand reach. The difference is not in the configuration. It is the difference between the operation wearing its vestment and the operation caught undressed.
This ordering matters, because the configuration runs the diagnosis backwards. It treats the addict as the broken case of a healthy logic: a sound principle of wanting, malfunctioning in a weak creature. The truth is the reverse. The addict is the honest case of a broken logic: the one position from which the +1 operation can be felt as what it is, because the vestments have burned off and the loop is visible closing.

THE LOOP
The relief is real. Every counterfeit in this body of work delivers a real relief, and the dose is no exception: the drink warms, the feed soothes, the purchase brightens, the number moving upward produces the lift. The measurement high is the general case: the surge when difference dissolves into the metric, when the count confirms, when the gap between creature and standard closes for a moment. The relief is not imagined, and treating it as imaginary misreads the operation.
The relief is also engineered to decay. The dose relieves a wound it does not touch, so the wound remains, so the relief must be repeated, and repetition raises the threshold: tolerance is the decay of relief per unit, and the decay is answered the only way the axis permits, by increase. The loop opens from no position on it, because every position is defined by the next dose. Enough does not compute here for the same reason it does not compute anywhere on the axis: if +1 is the operation, there is no quantity at which the operation reports completion.
What the dose medicates is the cut. The severed creature is in pain: the interval occupied or measured into distance, the world dimmed, the conducting loaded with carrying, the warmth of the room applied rather than real. The dose is relief from a wound the logic maintains, which is the loop's deepest lock: the operation sells the anesthetic for the injury it is inflicting, and the sale is repeat business by construction.

FELT AS COMPULSION, WORN AS VIRTUE
Run the same loop through two creatures. One drinks, and the reaching hand frightens her; she is named sick, treated, monitored, and held below the room's respect. The other accumulates, and the reaching hand is named ambition; he is promoted, profiled, and asked how he does it. Same configuration, same decay, same rising dose, same absent enough. The difference is entirely in the vestment, and the vestment is assigned by what the dose is: doses that serve the intake are consecrated, and doses that serve only the creature's anesthesia are pathologized.
This is why the respectable forms are the dangerous ones. The addict's loop is visible, to her and eventually to everyone, and visibility is the beginning of every release. The accumulator's loop is dressed as prudence, growth, development, self-improvement: the +1 applied to the portfolio, the resume, the follower count, the soul. No one stages an intervention for a rising number. The creature inside the consecrated loop has the same decaying relief and the same rising threshold, and has, in addition, a society organized to read her symptom as her virtue.
At the scale of a people, the consecrated loop becomes policy. Growth is the fix at the scale of a civilization: the dose without which the body politic registers withdrawal, and withdrawal, recession, contraction, is treated as disease rather than as the loop running exactly as built. The economy that must expand forever to avoid collapse is not like an addict. It is the addiction logic, installed as governance, with the planet as the liver.

THE REFUSAL OF THE REFILL
What ends the loop is not white-knuckle abstinence. Abstinence on the axis is a wall: the dose refused by continuous force, the will gripping against the reach, the no that must be defended hour by hour and consumes the creature defending it. The cost tell reads it correctly: a no that expensive is the first law's, and it fails the way walls fail, all at once, at the weak hour. The recovery traditions know this in their own vocabulary; nothing is more dangerous to the addict than her own willpower, because her willpower is the loop's own grammar, one more thing to accumulate and run dry of.
The release is the refusal of the refill, and the refusal of the refill is not a harder grip; it is the hand not closing on the dose that presents. It becomes possible not by strength but by re-reading the vacancy. The dose fills an emptiness the cut manufactured, and an emptiness read as a vacancy, a cell that something must fill, will be filled: if not this dose, the next, if not this substance, another, the swept house receiving its seven worse. The emptiness read as a facing is another condition entirely. Unoccupied because oriented, open toward what cannot be dosed, the same interior is no longer an address the dose can be delivered to. Nothing was added to the creature; the reading turned, and the reach, un-renewed, lapses.
What obtains then is not the loop run backwards, subtraction down the same axis, the count reversed. Nothing is left and nothing is arrived at; the same appetite is reconfigured: the creature's relation to amount returned to the day's bread, taken in, used up, gone by evening, enough. Enough was never available on the loop, and off it, enough is what obtains by default, which is the whole difference between the two laws stated at the scale of an appetite.
