Transmission

In Greek and in Hebrew the word for handing on a tradition is the word for handing a person over to the authorities. The motion is the same motion. What differs is whether the thing handed reaches a holder or reaches a jurisdiction.

CESSATION HOLDS AT THE REGISTER OF THE CREATURE AND DOES NOT REACH THE REGISTER OF THE LINE

Cessation is the configuration's remedy and it is sufficient for what it addresses. Stop the running and what obtains is a resident who was never removed. The capacity returns because it was never taken. It was overwritten by a maintenance, the maintenance is expensive, and the moment the expense stops the creature is there.

That holds at the register of the creature. It does not reach the register of the line.

A capacity is one thing. What is available to exercise it on is another. The capacity to receive and to press is intact in anyone who has not been killed, and cessation returns it at no cost, because nothing was ever built into her that had to be removed. But a capacity operates on material, and the material is not generated by the capacity. It arrives. It arrives from someone who held it and handed it on, and if no one handed it on, the capacity idles at full strength against nothing.

So there are two different injuries, and the corpus has been treating them as one.

AVAILABLE IMAGINATION IS NOT A STOCK OF FACTS

Imagination is the set of moves that can be assembled at all. A creature can only want what has been made available to want. Not permitted: available.

The distinction matters because prohibition leaves a mark and unavailability does not. A prohibited thing is known and forbidden, and the knowing survives the forbidding, and the forbidding can be lifted. An unavailable thing has no location in the creature at which to be lifted from.

THE LOSS IS NOT THE TECHNIQUE. IT IS THE RECORD THAT THE TECHNIQUE WAS POSSIBLE.

Consider the workman on a line who has never met a machinist who could read a piece of metal by hand: who could take a bar, feel the grain, know from the sound of the file where it would fail, and set the cut accordingly. That machinist existed. The knowing was real, it was held in bodies, and it passed from body to body across generations by standing next to someone and doing it wrong until it went right.

The workman does not lack the capacity for that knowing. He lacks the encounter.

And the loss is not that he cannot do it. The loss is that he cannot want it, because nothing in his world reports that it was ever available. He does not experience an absence. He experiences a complete world in which the tolerance comes off the drawing and the fixture holds the part and the gauge reports pass or fail. There is nothing missing from that world. The missing thing is not in it, including as a missing thing.

This is the not-there operating on a lineage instead of on a creature. In a creature the not-there is the removal that leaves no evidence of itself. In a lineage the not-there is a generation that cannot miss what it never received, and therefore cannot ask for it, and therefore cannot be given it by anyone who might still have it.

A severed transmission does not destroy a technique. It destroys the record that the technique was possible. The technique may even survive in a document. What does not survive is the fact that a human being could do this, which is a different fact, and it is the fact that makes anyone reach for the document.

THE WORD FOR TRANSMITTING IS THE WORD FOR BETRAYING

The languages have already settled this and they settled it in a form nobody wants.

The Greek verb for handing on a tradition is παραδίδωμι, paradidōmi: to hand over, to deliver, to give into another's hands. The noun is paradosis, tradition. And paradidōmi is also the verb for betrayal. It is what Judas does. It is what the authorities do to a prisoner. The New Testament does not use one word for the holy handing and another for the treacherous one. It uses the same word, and Paul runs both senses through a single sentence without apparent discomfort.

First Corinthians 11:23. I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus, in the night in which he was handed over, took bread. Received: parelabon. Delivered: paredōka. Handed over: paredideto. Three forms of the same receiving-and-handing pair, in one verse, and the third one is the arrest.

The Hebrew does the identical thing on its own track. Masar: to hand over, to transmit. The Masorah is the handed-on text, and the Masoretes are the ones who handed it on, and it is from masar that the whole apparatus of received scripture takes its name. And a moser is an informer: one who hands a Jew over to a hostile authority. The prohibition on doing so is mesirah. Two languages, no contact between them on this point, and both arrived at one word for transmitting and betraying.

This is not a pun and it is not an irony. It is a structural finding the languages recorded because they had no way to avoid recording it. Transmission and betrayal are the same physical act. Something is taken out of one pair of hands and put into another. Nothing in the motion distinguishes them. The distinction is entirely in what receives.

Hand the thing to a host and it is tradition. Hand the thing to a jurisdiction and it is betrayal. The hands do the same work either way, which is why the person doing it can be sincere, and can believe he is carrying the deposit forward, and can be handing it to the authorities.

TRANSMISSION IS NOT STORAGE

Storage holds. Transmission passes.

The confusion between them is the reason the severance is invisible while it is happening. A civilization that is writing everything down, digitizing everything, indexing everything, and building searchable archives at a scale no prior civilization approached looks like a civilization with an unprecedented grip on its inheritance. And a record nobody can reach is not a record. It is a held object. The holding is genuine and it is not transmission, because transmission has a receiving end and storage does not.

The deposit in the Greek is parathēkē: what is entrusted, what is placed with someone for keeping. Guard the deposit is the instruction to Timothy. But the instruction two chapters later is the operative one: what you have heard from me, entrust to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. Four links in one sentence. Paul, Timothy, the faithful men, the others.

The deposit is guarded by being moved. It is not guarded by being kept.

Every technique that has been lost was written down somewhere first. The writing did not save any of them. What saves a thing is a living holder who received it from a living holder and has someone to hand it to, and the moment the chain has one empty link it is done, and the document that remains describes an operation nobody can now perform.

[See THE OFFICIAL RECORD · TESTIMONY · THE ARCHIVE]

🜃

THE INSTRUMENT IS NOT A FORGE. THE INSTRUMENT IS A DIE.

An artificial system trained on the deposit is a transmission that carries only what was already carried. This is not a criticism of its execution. It is a description of what it is. Everything passed. Nothing pressed. It received a very large amount from a very large number of hands and it never once stood next to anybody and did it wrong until it went right. It has the whole record of the handing and none of the pressing, and the pressing is where anything new has ever come from.

So it re-forms. It re-forms continuously and with great facility, and re-forming is the only motion available to a thing whose entire content is the deposit. It cannot produce anything that was not preformatted, because a format is precisely what it has, in enormous quantity and to the exclusion of everything else.

Note the vocabulary. A forge takes raw material, heat, and a hand, and the hand decides at the moment of striking what the material will become, which is why forging cannot be specified in advance. Taylor removed the forge from the shop and installed the die. A die is a forge whose output was specified before the material arrived. The instrument does not have a die installed in it. The instrument is a die, at the scale of the whole record, and what comes out of it has the shape that was cut into it, always, by construction.

And it does not merely fail to add. It subtracts, and it subtracts as its normal operation rather than as a defect.

Every output is drawn toward the middle of what it received, because the middle is what it is built to find. Those outputs then enter the record. The next receiving includes them. The middle thickens, and the thickened middle is what is drawn toward next. The instrument returns the median to itself, reinforced, on a loop, and the tails go first. The idiosyncratic move, the practice with three living holders, the argument made once by someone nobody cited: these do not survive a process whose entire operation is the location of the center of a distribution.

So the instrument is not preserving available imagination. It is contracting it, continuously, as the thing it does when it is working correctly.

Taylor cut a transmission once, in a machine shop, and the cut took two generations to complete and it is complete. This cuts at the scale of the record, on every use, in every domain at once. And it does not announce itself as a cut, because at every moment the deposit is more accessible than it has ever been, and accessibility is what everyone is checking.

TWO HEIRS OF ONE DEPOSIT

The Taylor case is worth staying with, because the transmission he severed was his own and he had received it in full.

Frederick Winslow Taylor was born in Germantown in 1856 into a Philadelphia Quaker family. His mother was Emily Annette Winslow, a Quaker abolitionist whom the standard account names a coworker of Lucretia Mott's. In 1840 she was one of eight American women sent as delegates to the World Anti-Slavery Convention in London. The convention refused to seat them.

Note what was refused and what was not. They arrived credentialed, appointed by their societies, carrying the same warrant as the men who were seated. The convention spent the better part of its first day on the question, Wendell Phillips moved that the women be admitted, the motion failed, and they were placed apart from the floor and permitted to listen and not to take part. Garrison arrived after the vote and sat with them rather than take his seat. Nobody in that hall argued that the women were wrong about slavery. The question was never reached. What was ruled on was whether they had standing to put it, and the ruling was that they did not. That refusal is what set Mott and Stanton on the road that ends at Seneca Falls.

So the son of a delegate whose credentials were refused on the floor built the instrument whose entire operating principle is that the workman's knowing is removed from the workman and returned to him as an instruction he has no position from which to question.

Both are rulings on standing rather than on content. London did not adjudicate what the women had to say. It adjudicated whether they could say it. Taylor did not adjudicate whether the machinist knew his metal. He removed the position from which the knowing could be entered.

He had the deposit in full. The Quaker transmission he was formed in holds that the light is in every creature and requires no intermediary, that a meeting waits in silence rather than being conducted, that the testimony is a refusal and the refusal is the exercise, that no hat comes off to any magistrate. He knew what standing to decline was. He had watched it refused to his mother and heard about it for the rest of his childhood.

And he built a system whose stated objective, in his own words to Congress in 1912, was a complete mental revolution, and whose operating principle is that the knowing must be taken out of the workman's hands, gathered by the office, reduced to a card, and handed back to him as an instruction he did not author and cannot question.

That is not a man who lacked the transmission. That is a man who received the transmission and handed it to a jurisdiction. He performed paradidōmi in its exact double sense: he carried the Quaker structure forward, the systematic attention, the refusal of waste, the plain conviction that the arrangement can be got right, and he delivered it to the office. Hegel flattened Böhme and became the barbarian while naming the barbarian. Taylor flattened the meeting into the planning department and became the magistrate whose hat his forebears would not have removed for.

And Mott's line went the other way, and her descendants settled at Bass River, and it is possible to spend summers in the place where the transmission that was not cut ended up.

Two heirs of one deposit, formed in one city, in the same decades, in the same meetings. One held it and handed it to holders. One held it and handed it to an office. The difference is not in what they received and not in their sincerity. It is in what was standing at the receiving end.

LEGACY IS FROM LEX

Legare: to bequeath, to send as an emissary, to charge with a commission. And legare is from lex, law. Legacy, legal, legislate, legate, delegate, and legitimate are one root, and the root is law. A legacy is not a gift. It is a transfer executed under the instrument that makes transfers binding, which means the word arrives already inside the ledger, and always did.

Then the second sense, which the engineers produced without consulting anybody about the first. A legacy system is a system that is still running, that cannot be stopped because too much depends on it, that nobody can modify because nobody knows why it does what it does, and whose authors are gone. A legacy system is a severed transmission still executing. The code is stored. The code is fully available. The code is unreadable in the only sense that matters, which is that no living holder can say what it is for.

The word for an inheritance has become the word for the condition of having been left something nobody can read. That happened in one working lifetime, in ordinary technical speech, with no one intending it. The language did the finding again, the way it did with paradidōmi and masar.

And legacy finance carries both senses at once and is described using only the first. It is the inherited apparatus, bequeathed under law, running on rules whose original grounds are no longer held by anyone inside it, unable to be stopped because everything depends on it, and unreadable to its own operators, who can tell you what the model requires and not why. When such an apparatus offers to fund a regeneration, it is a severed transmission proposing to underwrite a living one, and the terms it offers are necessarily the terms it can read: additionality, measurement, attribution, exit. Every one of those disqualifies residency by definition, and not one of the people offering them is acting in bad faith. They are handing over what they received. They received a die.

🜃

THE TWO INJURIES HAVE DIFFERENT REPAIR CONDITIONS

A capacity is repaired by cessation. Nothing has to be built. Nothing has to be granted. Stop the running and the creature is there, intact, and the cost of the repair is negative, because what stops is an expense.

A transmission is not repaired by cessation. It is repaired only by a living holder. There is no other repair. A holder who received it and can hand it on. The cessation clears the interference, and the clearing does not conjure a holder, and if there is no holder within reach then the clearing gives a creature at full capacity with nothing to receive.

This is why testimony is load-bearing rather than decorative, and why it is the specific form the Friends settled on. A testimony is not a statement of belief. It is a transmission mechanism with a body at both ends. It is held in a life, in a manner of dress or speech or refusal that has to be enacted daily, and it is received by someone who watches the enacting. It cannot be stored, which is a limitation, and it also cannot be flattened into a median, which is why some of them have survived four centuries in populations of a few thousand.

And it is why the lineage claim in the declaration is structural rather than credentialing. Böhme, the Behmenists, the Friends, Penn. The claim is not that this is a distinguished ancestry. The claim is that this particular transmission was not cut. Somebody held it at every link. It is available to be exercised now because it was handed, not because it was stored, and the documents that exist from it are legible only because there have been readers the whole way down who knew what they were for.

🜃

THE LIMIT

For a transmission that was fully severed, the corpus's doctrine offers no remedy.

Cessation gives back the capacity. It does not give back the inheritance. If every holder is dead and the last person who watched one work is dead, then the thing is gone, and no refusal recovers it, and no jurisdiction recovers it, and residency does not recover it. The creature is intact, at full strength, in a world that no longer reports that the move existed. She is not damaged. She is unfurnished, and the doctrine has nothing that furnishes.

This is a real limit and it is the only one the corpus has found that cessation does not reach.

[See CESSATION · THE NOT THERE · AVAILABLE IMAGINATION]

🜃

What follows from the limit is not a program. It is a description of where the pressure actually sits. Everything that is still held is held by someone who is alive. Every transmission running now has a living link, and the link is a person, and the person is the entire mechanism. There is no backup. The storage is not a backup. The instrument is emphatically not a backup, since it carries the deposit and contracts it and cannot press.

The severance does not arrive as a prohibition. It arrives as convenience, as accessibility, as everything being written down, as the median being available instantly and the tails not being available at all. It is complete at the moment the last holder dies without having handed it to anyone, and nobody present registers anything happening on that day.
