Not a state a creature reaches, not a technique she performs, and not a past recovered. The configuration in which both faces of one operation stay available to be attended to, which is what is there when nothing is refusing it.

Two creatures meet the same event and read it differently, and the ordinary account of that is perspective: two vantages on one object, each partial, the truth somewhere between them or above them.
That account is wrong here and the error is not small. Unforgetting and forgetting are two configurations and not two perspectives, which means they are not two readings of one thing but two operations producing what there is to read.
Same sap, met two ways. The configuration of forgetting crystallizes one face of the doubleness and produces the appearance of single substance: not a face concealed behind another, but a face that is no longer there to be perceived, so that nothing registers as missing. The configuration of unforgetting attends to both faces without crystallizing either.
The word has a counterfeit that wears its clothes, and naming it belongs at the door rather than three sections in. To re-member is to put the members back together into a chosen body: the past dis-membered and reassembled into a shape that keeps the seat in place, which is the golden age and is nostalgia's entire operation. Nothing here is retrieved, no earlier condition is returned to, and there is no mythic past in it. What is remembered is present.

WHAT IS BEING UNFORGOTTEN
Nothing was mislaid, and this is the first thing the word gets wrong.
The creature has not lost a content she must now retrieve. There is no recovered memory here, no restored past, no earlier and better condition to be returned to. What is being remembered is not information. It is a face of what is presently in front of her, which was there the whole time and which the configuration she was in had no entry for.
The territory the crystal reads as empty was occupied the whole time. The prior resident is present, not gone, only no longer perceived. Unforgetting is not travel and it is not retrieval: it is the second face of a present thing becoming available again to a creature standing in the same place she was already standing.

IT IS NOT ATTAINED AND IT IS NOT KEPT
Configurations are not ranks. A creature is not promoted into unforgetting, does not qualify for it, and does not hold it as an achievement that would then be hers to lose.
This matters because every instrument that offers to conduct her there has to make it a destination first. The workshop, the practice, the training, the certified progression: each requires that unforgetting be somewhere she is not, so that the distance can be administered and the crossing charged for. A configuration that could be reached could be gated, and the whole of the doctrine is that this one cannot.
She is in one configuration or the other at any moment, and she moves between them, and the movement is not a career. What determines which one is running is not her merit and not her development. It is whether something is being refused.

IT COSTS NOTHING, AND THAT IS THE ASYMMETRY
The two configurations are not symmetrical and their asymmetry is the whole of the finding.
Forgetting requires continuous expenditure. The refusal has to be spent now, and again now, and the moment it stops the configuration does not persist. It is a crystal held frozen by work. Unforgetting requires nothing added, because it is what the substance does when the freezing stops.
Which is why the remedy is not a warmer effort. A deliberate melt, a managed thaw, warmth introduced as a technique, is the same operation applied to itself: heat administered by the party that was withholding it, which leaves the administering party in place. The heat was never the thing that had to be added. It was the thing being withheld, and it returns of its own accord the moment nothing is refusing it.

WHAT IT IS MISTAKEN FOR
Four counterfeits, and each of them is closer to the thing than an opponent would be, which is what makes them worth naming.
Awareness, presence, mindfulness. These are techniques, performed by a creature on herself, and the performance is the tell. A technique has a practitioner, a standard, a lapse, and eventually a teacher who certifies it. Unforgetting has no practitioner because there is nothing to do.
Nostalgia. Directed at a past, and its object is content. Unforgetting is directed at what is in front of her and its object is a face.
Balance. Holding both faces is not averaging them. The balanced account posts one against the other and closes at the midpoint, which resolves the doubleness rather than hosting it, and a resolved doubleness is one face crystallized with the arithmetic showing.
Neutrality, which is the deepest of the four. Many positions are valid. Who is to say. It is not for us to adjudicate. This presents as the absence of any configuration: the open hand, the held space, the refusal to impose. It is not neutral. Tolerance of every configuration is the protection of the one configuration that is preventing the others, and the refusal to name a configuration is the configuration of forgetting wearing absence as its costume.

HOW SHE KNOWS WHICH ONE SHE IS IN
The obvious objection is fatal if it is not answered. Forgetting cannot see itself, because a face that is no longer there to be perceived does not register as absent. So a creature inside it has no internal signal, and any test that asks her to look inward returns the configuration's own report.
So the test is not introspective. It is two questions about expenditure and availability, and both are answerable from outside.
What is being spent, and by whom. A configuration that requires continuous maintenance is being maintained by somebody, and the maintenance is findable: the reassertion, the correction, the reminder issued when the second face nearly surfaced, the cost that shows in a body. Nothing has to be spent to keep both faces available.
Whether the second face can be said. Not whether she agrees with it. Whether the sentence naming it can be uttered in the room without the utterance itself becoming the subject. A face that cannot be spoken without the speaker becoming the problem is a face that has already been crystallized out, and the room's response is the measurement.

AT THE RELATIONAL REGISTER
Between creatures the configuration has a shape and the shape has a name, which is hosting.
The host who is in it does not resolve what she is given. She receives the doubleness of the other and holds it without deciding which face is the real one, and she does this without gripping, which is the part that cannot be performed. Gripping is the attempt to keep the guest's second face in view by holding it, and a face held in place by a host is a face that has been crystallized by a different hand.
The books cannot do this. They require everything posted to be balanceable, and what cannot be balanced cannot be posted, so the creature whose history will not balance is not hosted, she is processed. Hospitality of this kind is available exactly where the accounting cannot reach, which is why it looks like nothing is happening.

THE POSITION IS THE SAME POSITION
There is no separate place from which the configuration is re-entered, and looking for one is how the search is made permanent.
The aperture through which the second face enters is the same aperture at which it was refused. The gap read from one configuration is abandonment, the place where something fell. Read from the other it is the opening. The same position, and what differs is not the position but whether anything is being held shut in it.
Which is why nothing has to be built to get there and why nothing found there is new. The Second Principle is not produced by the crossing and was not absent before it. What the crossing changes is whether it is operating through the Third, and the change is not additive.

WHY THE WORD IS UNFORGETTING
The word was chosen against two nearer ones, and both choices carry an argument.
Awareness is a capacity a creature has more or less of, which makes it a quantity, which puts it on an axis, which produces a scale, which produces those higher and lower on it. The vocabulary predicts the hierarchy before anyone builds it.
Remembering is nearer and it fails for a different reason. It is the word nostalgia borrows, and once borrowed it drags the gathering along with it: the members collected, the past reassembled, a shape rebuilt out of pieces. Nothing here is reassembled, because nothing came apart.
Unforgetting names a cessation rather than an act, which is the only grammar the operation permits. The prefix does not add. It stops. What is asked of the creature is not a labor of recovery but the ending of a refusal, and a word whose entire content is the undoing of the other word cannot be mistaken for a technique she performs.
It still carries the prior possession, which is the one thing the change of word could not be allowed to cost. A creature cannot unforget what she never had.
And what arises when the refusal ends is not summoned either. It is the Water-spirit, the first quality after it has been permitted to die: harshness that met the fire and received the light. The yielding is what lets the arrest give way, and the arising follows the yielding rather than the effort, which is why the operation is named for the stopping and not for what comes after it.

Two creatures stand in the same room and one of them cannot see what the other is looking at, and neither of them is lying. That is the whole difficulty, and it does not resolve by argument, because the argument runs between a creature who can see two faces and a creature for whom the second one is not there to be discussed. What can be done is smaller and it is not persuasion. The refusal that keeps the second face out is being spent continuously by somebody, and it can be declined, and what follows the declining is not something anyone has to make.
