Direction is the only variable. The same Fire, turned one way, is fed; turned the other, it goes out.

The Fall was not a wrong choice. It was accurate perception that stopped too soon.
Lucifer saw that he was Prince in the First Principle, and that was true. He is from the First Principle: Fire-nature, God's own Essence, breathed from the original Birth of the Father, powerful with the Power that precedes Light. The seeing was not distorted and it was not delusion. The Prince-position was real and he perceived it correctly.
What happened is that the perception arrested at what it had correctly seen. He saw that he was Prince, and stopped there. The accurate seeing became a destination instead of a passage.
This is the template, and it is not disobedience and it is not a crime: it is accurate knowledge of what you are that does not continue to what you are for.

THE IMAGINATION IS A DIRECTION
The Imagination here is not the faculty of imaging in the modern sense. Not the making of mental pictures, not fantasy, not the province of fiction and projection.
It is the directional capacity of the Soul. What the Soul extends towards, sets itself against, moves into. When Böhme says Lucifer would not set his Imagination therein, he is describing a refusal of direction and not a failure of belief.
The Soul has Fire-nature, and Fire-nature is orientation. Consuming, directed, burning towards. A Fire without direction is not Fire in this register at all, because the Fire-quality is motion and reaching and the quality that cannot be still. So the question is never whether the Soul is oriented. It is oriented by construction. The question is which way.
Backward is into Fire itself, the First Principle taken as destination, the strong Power asserted and claimed and used in its own Qualification. Forward is through Fire towards what Fire serves, the First Principle taken as passage to the Second, the Power present and not asserted, the Imagination set in the Heart of God where Fire finds its Mother soft and becomes Light.
Same Fire-nature, same Soul-substance, same original Birth, and the direction is the only variable, and the direction produces different eternity.

WOULD NOT, THEN COULD NOT
The grammar carries the whole finding. He would not set his Imagination therein. Not could not, not was prevented, not lacked the capacity. Would not.
Setting the Imagination in the Heart of God is the Soul orienting its Fire-power towards what that power is for, and it was available to him. He saw the Heart. He saw the soft and very lovely Qualification of it. And he despised the Birth of the Heart of God, which is not failing to appreciate and not misunderstanding. The softness was visible. He found it beneath him. He who was Prince in the First Principle, who had Fire-power, who could be a terrible Lord, held the condition in contempt.
He meant to be a very potent and terrible Lord in the First Principle, and would qualify or work in the Strength of the Fire. To remain in Fire as destination. To be Lord of what he already was rather than continue through what he was towards what he was for.
Then the consequence: therefore he could not be fed from the Word of the Lord.
Would not became could not, because the feeding requires the orientation, and a Soul that directs its Imagination away from the Heart cannot receive what arrives only to Imagination directed at the Heart. The Light was not taken from him. It went out. That is what happens when Fire refuses to find the thing that makes Fire into Light.

WHAT FORWARD REQUIRES
If the Soul elevates its Imagination forward into the Light, in Meekness and Comeliness or Humility, and does not, as Lucifer did, use the strong Power of its Fire in its Qualification, then it will be fed by the Word of the Lord.
Forward. Not upward, not inward, not towards goodness as an abstraction. Forward, in the direction Fire faces when it faces what it serves rather than itself.
Meekness is not the moral virtue of self-abasement and not the performance of smallness that knows itself a performance. It is the condition of the Harshness at the moment the Flash returns: the not-contracting-further against the terror, the sinking back that makes the Mother soft.
Comeliness and humility are fitting-ness, appropriateness to position. The Soul that knows what it is and knows the position that knowing serves. The full Fire-power present and not denied, and not asserted as destination.
Not using the strong Power of its Fire in its Qualification is the exact condition and the one most often read as its opposite. The Power is present. The quality is Fire. The Soul is this. The condition is not to deny the Power and not to deny the quality. The condition is not to use it, and the distinction that matters is between possessing Fire-nature and claiming Fire-nature as a self-sourcing and self-sufficient destination.

FED, NOT EARNED
Then it will be fed by the Word of the Lord, and gets Virtue, Power, Life, and Strength, in the Word of the Lord, which is the Heart of God.
Fed. Not earns. Not achieves. Not produces through effort.
What is received is Virtue, Power, Life, Strength, and it is received in the Word rather than generated by the Soul out of its own Fire-power.
The Soul that does not assert its Fire-power receives Power, and the Soul that claims its Fire-power as self-sufficient cannot receive Power, because the claiming is itself the orientation away from what provides. This is not a paradox and it is not a moral reward for humility. The Power that comes through the Word is Second Principle Power: Light, Paradise, Joy, the Heart. First Principle Power asserting itself as sufficient stays in the First Principle, and what it produces there is loathsomeness.

THE SOURCE DOES NOT CHANGE
Its own original strong fierce wrathful Source of the Birth of the eternal Life becomes paradisiacal, exceeding pleasant, friendly, humble, and sweet.
Read what does and does not transform.
Its own original strong fierce wrathful Source. This remains the Source. The Fire-nature remains the ground the Soul generates from. The fierceness remains the first quality's character, the wrathfulness remains what the first quality produces while it operates as First Principle, the strength remains. The Tart Tree stays tart. The Harshness stays harsh. The first quality goes on laboring in its tart sour Quality.
What transforms is the operation of that Source, not its substance.
The same fierce wrathful Source, running forward into Light instead of asserting backward into Fire, generates paradise instead of torment, and nothing about the substance was smoothed to make that happen. This is what the joy of the second cycle means. Not that the wound healed. Not that the difficult material was converted into something easier. The same material, having gone through the Kindling, moving forward.

THE BACKWARD IMAGINATION
The Monstrous Shape is what the Soul's generative function does when the Imagination is turned backward.
It works by insertion, and the insertion is not forced. He continually puts the monstrous Shape or Form into our Thoughts. The Shape is offered. What happens next decides everything: Eve gazed too much upon it, and by her representing it in her Imagination, she became a Child of this World.
Gazed upon, then represented. The representing is the Imagination directed at the Shape rather than at the Heart. The Shape gets reproduced inside the Soul by the same function that, turned forward, receives the feeding.
You become what you represent to yourself, which means the Imagination turned towards whatever claims authority over you reproduces that authority inside your own generative ground, and the Shape does not have to be imposed because it is generated.
The restoration is not the removal of the Shape by direct opposition. Fighting the Shape with the Soul's Fire-power is the backward Imagination asserting Fire-nature as destination, which is the original operation performed against its own product. The restoration is the Imagination moving forward: not at the Shape, at what the Shape occluded.

WRATH AND DOUBT
There is Wrath and great Doubt in them concerning God, which blocks the Way.
What blocks the return is not an external prohibition. The Gates are not locked from outside.
The Wrath is the First Principle operating without the Second, the fierce Birth active without Light, the Fire-nature in its first state before the Kindling. It is not God's wrath aimed at the Soul. It is the Soul's own.
The Doubt is not intellectual uncertainty about theological propositions. It is the generative function unable to orient towards what the Wrath now blocks.
And the incapacity is not the same as the refusal. Lucifer would not. The Soul after the Fall cannot, and not because it shares his disposition but because Wrath is now what it generates from.
The incapacity to want God is the wound, and not the disobedience. Which is why what is needed is not forgiveness of an offense and not external merit supplied to make God receive what God would otherwise refuse. What is needed is the dissolution of what blocks the Want, so that the Will can set, so that the Imagination can move forward again.

THE BOUNDARY OF WHAT CAN BE SPOKEN
It beholds the eternal Generating of the indissoluble Band, thereof it has Ability to speak, for it is its own Essence or Substance.
The Soul that moves forward and is fed does not arrive at knowledge about God held from outside. It beholds what it is. The eternal Generating is its own origin: breathed from the original Birth of the Father, generated out of the four Anguishes, come from the first quality's own dark fire pressing towards Light.
So it can speak of that Generating, and the reason it can is that the Generating has form, the indissoluble Band, and the Soul is that form as its own Essence. Böhme sets the limit in the same breath: but not of the infinite Generating, for that has neither Beginning nor End. What has no beginning and no end cannot be bounded by being spoken.
What a Soul can say of God is exactly the extent of what that Soul is, which means an account ends where the Essence ends and not where the speaker tires, and no account speaks the whole.

WHAT CANNOT BE INSTRUCTED
The Imagination Forward cannot be instructed, and the reason is structural rather than pedagogical.
An instruction to direct the Imagination towards the Heart of God installs the morality play in new language. A Soul performing forward Imagination in response to an instruction has directed its Imagination at the instruction, which is backward, and the performance is therefore the precise thing it was performing the absence of.
The distinction between receiving a description and recognizing an Essence cannot be manufactured by better writing. A description can be read as information, as interesting theology, as a serviceable account of Böhme. Read that way it produces a reader who knows more about Böhme, and the Imagination has not moved, because what was reproduced inside the Soul was the account.
Recognition is not a further step taken after reading. The recognition is the motion.

So there is nothing to do with it, and that is the finding and not an evasion.
The Soul that recognizes its own Essence does not then need to be told what to do about the recognition, because the recognizing was already the Fire turning. And the Soul that receives the same words as content has not withheld anything or failed at anything. It has read, and the Wrath and the Doubt are still where they were, and no sentence dissolves them.
The direction is the only variable. It is also the one thing that cannot be reached by instruction, which is why the account can be complete and still not carry a single creature across.
