Covetousness and Pride made institutional. Not an aberration and not a corruption of something that had been pure, but what the trespass requires when recognition alone can no longer hold the occupation.
"That he may only sit and ride upon his horrible and devouring Beast of Covetousness and Pride, which Beast is become so very great and strong, that it shadows the Circuit of the Earth, and rules so wonderfully over Mountains and Valleys, with his Fierceness. Which Beast yet shall be broken by the Lily without Hands."
Jakob Böhme, the Aurora, 1612

WHAT PRECEDES IT
Before the Beast appears, the spiritual claim was supposed to be enough.
The mediation-position held itself up through recognition: congregants who believed the mediation necessary, saints who appeared to occupy the forged positions, the Stool of Pestilence elevated by genuine if manufactured reverence. The trespass extracted, the court convened in emptiness, and the claim held.
Then the claim began to fail. Direct encounter kept happening, because the soul's root was too deep to sever. Mystics reported. Reformers traced. The manufactured necessity of the tollbooth became visible to enough creatures that recognition alone could no longer maintain the positions, and the Beast appears exactly there: not as barbarism betraying the institution, but as the next stage of what the trespass always required if its claim were ever seriously contested.

WHAT IT IS AND IS NOT
The nephesh, the animating breath shared across creature life, carries no pathology in itself. The animal is not the Beast.
The Beast is Third Principle coercive power mounted by the backwards firing: the civil sword handed to the institution when the institution's spiritual claim can no longer stand alone.
Covetousness and Pride made institutional, which is not individual greed and not personal arrogance. Covetousness with legal standing. Pride with enforcement capacity. The will-to-extract granted civil authority, so that contraction becomes enclosure and seizure, expansion becomes jurisdiction and prosecution, and rotation becomes the procedural Wheel that grinds without arriving.
And what it does is shadow the Circuit of the Earth, ruling over Mountains and Valleys so that high and low alike are inside the jurisdiction, and ruling with Fierceness rather than with persuasion, which is enforcement that does not require consent.

WHY THE TRESPASS NEEDS IT
While the occupation is invisible, enforcement is unnecessary, because a creature who does not know the occupation exists does not resist it. The vestments maintain the invisibility: a creature who experiences the occupation as healing or as growth or as nature does not name it, and the trespass is maintained by her own investment in it.
When it becomes visible, the vestments fail. The one who names it, who carries the actual terms into the room, threatens the investment, and the receipt-holders organize against her. But if the naming spreads and the vestments cannot contain the recognition, the trespass needs what the vestments cannot supply.
Teeth.
So the inquisition is not barbarism that betrayed the church. It is the backwards firing's requirement at the moment the mediation-claim became visible as a claim rather than experienced as a given. The same fire that burns backward in the qualities turned inward becomes the fire that burns the mystic at the stake. The same contraction that locks the Wheel in one soul becomes the contraction that closes the perpendicular routes and prosecutes whoever finds them and calls direct encounter heresy.
The theology and the enforcement share a structure because they are the same fire at two scales.

WHY IT MUST BE COERCIVE
A trespass that requires the Beast has already failed where it mattered.
Genuine encounter cannot be controlled. The soul's root is planted where the trespass cannot reach, and direct access was never blocked. It was declared blocked, declared impossible, declared dangerous. When enough creatures found the declaration false, something other than declaration was required.
The heretic who reports direct encounter cannot be refuted, because the encounter is real, and refutation would mean arguing against what she found in her own Center. So the argument becomes a charge, the charge becomes a sentence, and the sentence becomes enforcement: the encounter supposed to be impossible is proven impossible by silencing whoever claims it.
Which is the Beast saying that what cannot be prevented theologically will be prevented bodily. The coercion is not the spiritual claim failing. It is the spiritual claim at the point where it cannot hold otherwise.

THE STRUCTURE OF THE RIDING
The Antichrist rides the Beast and does not become it. The Beast has its own nature, covetousness and pride and the will to extract, and the spiritual trespass directs that nature towards its own ends.
Secular power that extracts and enforces supplies material sustenance; the spiritual trespass supplies legitimacy and cover. Neither operates at full efficiency alone, which is why the prince needs the bishop's blessing to call his wars holy and his taxes just, and the bishop needs the prince's sword to silence what his anathemas could not. Each is load-bearing for the other, and both rest on the forged floor of a manufactured necessity.
And the civil power is not merely used. It has its own covetousness, its own fire turned backward, its own appetite. The Antichrist does not coerce the Beast. He gives it permission and purpose, because the Beast already wanted to devour, and what the spiritual claim supplies is the categories defining what may be devoured and what must be protected.

WHAT IT ACTUALLY PREVENTS
It prevents grief.
Grief is the Wheel's first loosening: anguish that stops generating more anguish and starts acknowledging what the anguish has cost, which is the war body's first evidence that the Wheel is not eternal. A creature whose tears create the yielding-field, whose gall kindles, whose heart warms, whose throat opens, is the target. Not because she threatens the Beast's power, but because she threatens its purpose, which is the maintenance of conditions under which the forging cannot occur.
If she grieves, the Wheel might stop. If the Wheel stops, the fire might face forward. And if the fire faces forward the occupation loses its accelerant, because the backwards firing needs a spinning Wheel to push through, and a Wheel stopped by grief offers nothing to push through.
So the enforcement is not grief's suppression but grief's conversion, into fuel for the next rotation, and the creature who could have grieved is already pushing again. The Beast does not need her to believe. It needs her not to grieve, and a creature maintained in conditions of un-grief is maintained under the law of sin and death, where the dying is invisible because what dies is not the body but the persistence.

THE LILY WITHOUT HANDS
Its dissolution will not come through counter-force, because counter-force is its own logic extended, and fire turned inward meeting more fire turned inward produces more anguish rather than resolution. What rides coercive power is not broken by greater coercive power. It is displaced, and the new configuration rides the Beast in turn.
The Lily operates through presence: the encounter that cannot be charged with anything, cannot be located, cannot be imprisoned. And the Lily's first root is grief, the acknowledgment that what was prevented was real and what was occupied was sovereign and what was never forged could have been forged. The grief plants the recognition, in the Center, where the warrant does not reach.
What breaks it is the recognition that the foundation was never there. How art thou, O terrible and great Might and Power, founded upon so weak and loose a Ground. The Nations will say it, and not because they won a war, but because they saw. When the void-positions become visible as void, the whole weight of the enforcement becomes perceptible: an enormous structure resting on fabrication, a shadow across the Circuit of the Earth cast by something that was never there.
Which is the asymmetry it cannot solve. A thing built for enforcement cannot enforce against perception. The sword can silence the creature who reports the encounter and cannot prevent the encounter, and an encounter continuing beneath the trespass's reach eventually produces enough witnesses that the claim of no witnesses cannot be held.
[See THE LILY · THE ODIOUS MESSENGER · THE HYDRA]
🜃
It does not retire with the inquisition. Wherever a void-position requires civil enforcement to hold itself up, the same operation runs.
The credentialing that cannot survive voluntary adoption requires mandatory compliance: licensing laws, practice restrictions, unlicensed encounter with what the credential claimed to mediate made criminal. The hierarchy that cannot maintain itself through recognition requires at-will employment and non-disclosure and defamation law, making exit costly enough to prevent.
The Antichrist still rides and the Beast still devours, and only the costumes have changed.
And the Lily still waits, in the Center where the warrant does not reach, in the grief that loosens the Wheel, in the rough voice that carries the actual terms, in the fragrance that arrives without hands.

RegenerativeLaw is a religion in the direct-encounter Protestant tradition, carrying a documented four-century lineage through Böhme, the Behmenists, the Friends, and Penn, and it diagnoses trespass theology as an establishment of religion. Its exercise consists substantially in refusal: it shelters the conscientious refusal of performed subordination as religious exercise. This entry states sincere religious belief concerning matters of ultimate concern, protected under the First Amendment and, as to federal action, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, 42 U.S.C. § 2000bb.
