It gives itself as food and the food does not nourish. What circulates carries the shape of love and the function of debt.

In the Love Tree something happens that happens in no other Tree: the wound stops being root only and becomes meal.
The first Essence, viz. the Tartness, is wholly desirous or longing, wholly sweet, wholly light, and gives itself forth to be Food to all the Qualities, with a hearty Affection towards them all, as a loving Mother has towards her Children.
The Harshness, first quality and wound and origin, gives itself to be eaten. Not reluctantly and not transactionally. With a hearty Affection, which is what it does now that it has become wholly sweet and wholly light.
The order is the whole of it: the wound has already become root and the root has already generated the tree, and only then does it give itself as food. It gives from fullness, from a quality that carries the Oil internally and generates in joy rather than anguish, and what receives it can metabolize it.

THE COUNTERFEIT
It also gives itself as food. The difference is that the Harshness has not transformed.
The wound gives itself as wound. Raw, unmetabolized, still tart and still contracting, still generating through anguish. The giving comes from what has not completed the crossing, and it offers itself before it has become root.
What the recipient receives is not nourishment but burden, because a raw wound given as food produces obligation in the fed: guilt, and the felt sense that something was sacrificed for her, and that she now carries the debt of the sacrifice.

AFTER EVERYTHING I'VE DONE FOR YOU
The sentence names the mechanism exactly. The giving was tracked. The sacrifice was ledgered. The love was entered in a book that will be read aloud at the moment the recipient attempts to leave.
The Love Tree keeps no record, and cannot, because keeping one would require the Harshness to have stayed harsh.
The counterfeit gives and records, gives and displays, so that the giving becomes evidence and the sacrifice becomes testimony and the love becomes an exhibit in a trial the recipient did not know she was standing in.
The mother who gives everything and makes sure it is known. The partner who sacrifices and waits for the reciprocation that would prove the sacrifice was seen. The friend who absorbs the pain and mentions the absorbing at the moment autonomy is attempted. Each genuinely gives, and what each gives is the raw material of obligation.

THE ANNOUNCEMENT
I'm being vulnerable with you performs the sharing and announces it in the same breath, and the announcement is what converts it.
In the Love Tree, Bitterness may rightly be called Joy, for it is the Rising or Moving. A wound shared from transformed quality arrives as joy, not because the sharing avoided pain but because the Bitterness has been revealed as what joy always was.
In the counterfeit the Bitterness is not revealed but interpreted: told that it is joy, insisted upon as joy, while still carrying the full sting of the untransformed. So the recipient who flinches has failed a test, and the recipient who absorbs the sting without flinching has entered the economy.

THE DEPLETION IS THE CREDENTIAL
The Love Tree cannot deplete, because the giving is what transformed quality does and the giving regenerates it. In the very Midst of Death, the eternal Life is generated.
The counterfeit gives from a finite store, from what was accumulated rather than what regenerates, and so the giving empties the giver.
And then the emptiness is entered as the proof. I gave everything. I have nothing left. I poured myself out for you. The exhaustion demonstrates what wholeness could not: that the giving was real, and costly, and sacrificial.
Which means the giver who gives without depleting fails the test, because her love looks insufficient and easy and as though it did not cost enough. The configuration requires that love deplete, because depletion is what produces the debt.

SELF-ERASURE PERFORMED AS LOVE
Coverture absorbed the wife's legal existence into the husband's. She did not cease to work; she ceased to be a person the law could see.
The counterfeit performs that at the level of the soul. The one who gives everything disappears, and not into transformed quality that regenerates, but into absence. What was a person becomes a function.
The real Mother gives herself as food and remains. The hearty remains, the Affection remains, and the Self that gives is retained, because a transformed Self gives from what regenerates.
The counterfeit Mother vanishes into the giving, and the vanishing is then called selflessness and ranked as the highest of the virtues, which makes it the one killing that is performed in public and applauded.

IT REQUIRES RECIPIENTS
Where there is no Fear of any End, nor can be. That is the Love Tree's signature, and the reason is structural: the giving is the function, and what gives regenerates through giving, so an ending threatens nothing.
The counterfeit's signature is terror at the End, because there the giving is the giver's identity, and without it she does not return to herself but to nothing.
A Love Tree that fears the End has identified itself. The parent who cannot let the child depart. The teacher who needs the student's need. The healer who requires the wound to continue. The community that cannot release anyone into departure. Each gives, and each requires the recipient to remain, because the remaining is what the giver is made of.

AND IT CANNOT BE METABOLIZED
The Love Tree's food converts. Whoever eats becomes capable of feeding, and the nourishment becomes her own quality.
The counterfeit's food sits. It produces weight without nourishment, the sense of having been given to with no capacity to give from, because a recipient cannot convert what the giver did not convert, and raw wound transferred stays raw in whoever receives it.
So she returns for more, and not because the giving nourished. Because it produced a specific deficit and named the deficit love.
And the shape of the two is opposite. The Love Tree's food produces a crossing: sudden, unexpected, delivered, as a man delivered out of the Pain and Torment of Hell and put into the Light of the Divine Joy. The counterfeit produces gradual improvement, incremental healing, each session a little better, an accumulation that never reaches the transition, because the transition would end the economy.

The sequence cannot be skipped. The Harshness has to become wholly sweet and wholly light, has to carry the Oil in its own Quality, has to generate through joy rather than anguish. Only then is what it gives food.
Given before that, from the wound as wound, it is the law of sin and death wearing the Love Tree's face.
