The Round Already in the Body
Somewhere right now a woman is doing the arithmetic of the door.
Not whether the marriage is good — that question closed years ago — but what the leaving will cost: the house, the children's schools, the insurance, her name, her mother's opinion, her body. The arithmetic feels like prudence. It is ballistics. She is calculating the exit wound, and the calculation assumes, as the form taught her to assume, that the wound is ahead of her, waiting at the door. It is not ahead of her. It went in years ago, at the entry, and it was called a gift when it went in.

THE OPERATION
The forensic fact first.
An entry wound is small. Clean. It often barely bleeds.
An exit wound is catastrophic — ragged, wide, made of everything the round gathered on its way through.
The round does not carry that damage in; it acquires it from the body it traverses.
The damage at the door is made of the years inside the house.
The hostage structure fires this round at the entry, which is why the entry is engineered painless.
The integration phase, the help, the marriage, the position, the loan, the membership — the round goes in under the names love, opportunity, protection, care, and the body registers no impact, because the impact has been priced forward.
The exit wound IS the entry wound, arrived at the surface. Nothing new happens at the door. What was installed at the arrival becomes visible at the departure, and the structure needs no guard at the threshold, because the price of leaving was set on the day of arrival — the sacralization issued in advance, in the standing warrant's register, before any case arose.
While the round stays lodged, it stays illegible. No blood, no tear; the structure grips everything in place, and the grip is felt as stability. The damage manifests only at the threshold — and so it is billed to the threshold.
She destroyed the family by leaving.
The whistleblower destroyed the company.
The town killed the jobs.
The date of the visibility is entered as the date of the injury, and the departure is charged with the shot. The correction is one sentence, and it is the pathologist's, not ours: an exit wound is proof the round was already in the body.
THE MASS
The round gathers its mass from the gifts.
The pension that vests at twenty years. The insurance welded to the job. The visa welded to the employer. The shared accounts, the credit built jointly, the children, the name taken at the wedding, the self assembled inside the form and legible nowhere else.
Each of these, at installation, was called a benefit — and was one. That is the mechanism, not a complication of it: the receipt of the genuine benefit is what conceals the round going in, and the benefit itself becomes the mass the round transfers on the way out. The form does not grow its exit wounds by adding threats. It grows them by adding gifts. Created dependencies are the round's gathered mass, and the most generous form is the one whose door does the most damage.
THE HOUSEHOLD REGISTER
The register where the gun is literal has already convicted the operation in the record.
Cobbe documented it from inside in 1878: the violence scaling with the wife's dependence, the household's bond revealed as the foreclosure at exactly the moment the bond is refused.
The modern record entered its own instrument in 1991, when Martha Mahoney named separation assault — the attack aimed not at the staying but at the leaving, the violence organized around the threshold itself. And the lethality finding sits beside it in the same file: the most dangerous period is the departure and the season after it. The practitioners in that field state as data what this entry states as geometry — the form spends its enforcement at the door.
It spends it there because departure is the testimony the form cannot disqualify.
Every other naming can be absorbed — narrated, ceremonialized, adjudicated, entertained. But the body walking out is a witness statement delivered in the one register the form's instruments do not reach, and the form answers testimony it cannot disqualify by disqualifying the witness.
Too Big to Fail is this round at national scale — the catastrophe broadcast is the exit wound displayed in advance, and the threat is honest, which is what makes it a hostage structure and not a bluff.
THE TEST
Where the injury is dated to the departure, the exit wound IS the shield in ballistic register — the damage relocated onto the one whose leaving names it.
The test is portable and runs in one move: when the harm appears at the door:
Ask when the round went in.
Ask what was installed at the entry, under what name, and who has been carrying it since.
The test has no exemptions clause. The coalition that bills a member's exit as betrayal, the congregation that reads departure as apostasy, the movement — this record included — that calls its leavers destroyers: each is running the round, whatever its founding sincerity, and the founding sincerity is the entry wound's anesthesia.

She is still at the door, doing the arithmetic.
The form has taught her to read the sum as the future — what the leaving will do, what the leaving will destroy. The ballistics read it as the past. The round went in at the entry, under the name of a gift, and it has been gathering mass from every year since. Leaving does not fire the gun; the firing is already done. Leaving is where it stops being deniable — which is why the form spends its hatred there, at the threshold, on the body that is testimony. The wound is not the price of the exit. The wound is the entry's receipt.
