Comprehension as Standing-Over — the Trespass at the Register of Knowing
🜃
To understand, in the configuration of forgetting, is to over-stand — to stand over. The creature is the prior occupant of her own perceiving; over-standing steps her up out of that residency into a seat above and takes what she was living as an object below. The word carries the operation and hides it. Understanding sounds like standing-under, like humility, like being beneath a thing in order to bear it. It is standing over.

THE WORD
To stand over, to stand among, to stand across.
Trespass is trans-passare — to step across a boundary.
Standing-over is the standing form of the stepping-across, the trespass kept as a posture rather than performed as a lunge.
Over-standing's “over” is not excess. It is above-ness: the seat taken above a residency already occupied. What over-standing crosses into is not more of her own territory but the perceiving that was hers as its prior occupant. see THE TRESPASS

THE SEAT ABOVE
Over-standing does not enter.
It surveys. It takes the situation as object from a position that is not inside it, and the position is the point of it: to comprehend is understood, in this configuration, to mean to get far enough above a thing to see the "whole" of it at once.
This is the observer set where participation belonged — the third quality in the seventh position, the distance installed where the immersion would have been. The subject-object split is the column it sits in; over-standing is the posture that occupies the column, and it occupies it in the first person, against the creature's own life, so that she becomes the auditor of a situation she has stepped out of in order to audit.

THE TWO REFUSALS
A situation, like a seam, can be yielded into — entered, received, participated — or refused.
There are two refusals of the yielding, and over-standing is one of them.
The war body refuses by pushing through: force applied at the seam, the crossing forced rather than surrendered to.
Over-standing refuses by not entering: the seat built above, the situation kept at the distance a survey requires. see FORCING THE INTERVAL
And the two are not finally separate, because the seat above is kept by a force of its own. The living situation does not present itself as surveyable object; it must be pressed into that form — flattened, decomposed, held still enough to be read one coordinate at a time — and the pressing is continuous, paid for at every moment the seat is occupied. What the field returns, met from the seat, is the only thing a field pressed into object can return: the leer. see THE LEER AND THE RADIANCE

OVER-STANDING AND SENSE-MAKING
Over-standing is the operation. Sense-making is its prized form. see SENSE-MAKING
Over-standing is the bare move — stand over, take as object, do not enter — and it appears wherever comprehension becomes mastery: the expert's distance, the diagnosis delivered from outside, the analysis that resolves a life into its parts, the verdict issued by someone who was never in the room. It does not require humility, and it does not require a method. It requires only the seat.
Sense-making is over-standing elaborated into a discipline. It takes the further steps the bare operation does not require: it accepts the occupation as an environment and reads it with great subtlety, it sets coherence above accuracy as the thing it is after, and it agrees in advance to interpret the situation rather than name the hand that made it. Sense-making is over-standing that has been taught to be humble, collaborative, and meaning-seeking — over-standing wearing the second law's vocabulary. That is why it is the prized form and the hardest to see: the seat above has learned to speak of listening, of holding space, of not claiming to know, and the speaking is the perfect cover for the fact that no one has come down.
The operation is one; its forms are many. Understanding is over-standing that has forgotten it stands over. Expertise is over-standing credentialed. Mastery is over-standing that has stopped noticing the residency beneath it. Sense-making is over-standing made a virtue. Naming any form does not reach the operation, because the operation is the standing-over itself, and it survives every name that improves its manners.

THE RECURSION
You cannot over-stand your way out of over-standing. To survey the operation is to perform it — the diagnosis of the seat, written from the seat, is another survey, and it delivers the clarity that is over-standing's own reward. The exit is not a sharper account. It is stepping down: the emptying of the one who surveys, the re-entry into residency, the yielding into what she was standing over. This is not a move over-standing can make, because the stepping-down is the end of the stander, and the stander is the one who would have to decide to make it.
🜃
Over-standing is the most innocent-seeming trespass, because its name is the name for care, for grasping-in-order-to-help, for wanting to comprehend. The creature who over-stands her own life believes she is finally seeing it clearly, and she is — clearly, from above, as object. The clarity is the exact measure of the distance she has put between herself and the one who lived there. The seeing is the leaving. And she cannot see this from where she sees it, because seeing it would require standing where she no longer stands.
