JUSTIFICATIONS
Of the War Body
The war body cannot strike without a justification. Not because it is restrained — because the justification is part of the blow. It is produced by the act, not held before it, and it works in two directions at once: outward, to license the strike to the witnesses, and inward, to keep the body that strikes from seeing what it is. The justification is not the reason for the trespass. It is the costume the trespass puts on so that it can be repeated and survived. What follows is the wardrobe.

WHO COUNTS
Bad for others but good for me. //\\ If we didn't do this to them they would do it to us.
The strike rewritten as defense by giving the striker's own intent to the target. The war body knows what it would do in the other's place because it is doing it; it calls that knowledge the other's plan. The extermination is filed as prevention, the first blow recorded as the second. Projection given the form of foresight.
They were a threat. They were dangerous.
The designation that converts attack into protection.
The war body never hunts; it defends.
Everything it does is response — to a danger it announced, to a threat it assigned.
The target is made dangerous by being named dangerous, and the naming is the warrant. Dangerous to law and order: the order is the occupation, and the danger is anything that will not lie down inside it.

THE COSTUMES OF NECESSITY
Parasites consuming the host.
The exact inversion. The body that is occupying the dwelling calls itself the host and the prior occupant the parasite — assigns the name of the one who makes space to the one taking it, and the name of the consumed to the one consuming. The displacer accuses the displaced of feeding on the body the displacer has seized. It is the killer instinct performed on a single word: the trespasser claims the host's position and casts residency as infestation, so that removal reads as health.
Cleanse the area of undesirables.
The killing, the layoff, the pushout rendered as hygiene. Once the target is a parasite, its removal is not murder but sanitation; the war body is not a killer but a cleaner; the ground is not robbed but purified. Order requires the sacrifice, and the sacrifice is dressed as the restoration of a cleanliness that was never there.

THE DISCLAIMED EYE
You don't understand this. Leave this to us.
The severance of the witness from her own knowing. The expert, the authority, the one who presides takes the territory of judgment and hands the witness back her incompetence. You are not equipped to see what you are seeing; the ones who are equipped have decided; defer. It is Process Says at the edge of the grave — the procedure that knows installed between the creature and what is in front of her.
This is beyond my comprehension. We don't understand what is going on. I don't understand what I am looking at.
The perception present and disclaimed. The eye saw; the mouth says it did not understand the seeing. Incomprehension offered as innocence — as if the failure to file what was seen under a word one was willing to say absolves the seeing. The not-knowing here is not a lack. It is a refusal worn as a lack, the formatting that has trained the pre-procedural register out so thoroughly that the body can stand at the edge of the pit and report that it could not make sense of the view.

THE WILL
Never capitulate. Fight to the end. The unshakeable will.
The refusal to yield, raised to the highest virtue. Fire becomes light only through yielding; the will that will not yield is the war body's lock declared its glory.
Capitulation — the laying-down of the will, the surrender that is the whole of the work — is named the one unforgivable thing, and the contraction that cannot melt is named strength. The body vows never to do the only thing that would make it a soul, and calls the vow honor.

THE NAKED FACE
You don't have to be a businessman to understand why. We get richer.
The face beneath all the others. Strip the defense, the threat, the hygiene, the incomprehension, the will, and the ledger is standing there, plain. The dwellings were taken, the labor was unpaid, the property was posted to new accounts. We got richer is the sentence the other justifications exist to drown — the one that needs no costume because it is the operation itself, said without one. The Market Says face, where the trespass stops apologizing and admits it was extraction the whole way down.

None of these is a reason.
A reason precedes the act; these are produced by it, after the hand has already moved, to make the moving bearable and repeatable.
They are the receipts the war body writes itself — each one legitimate on its face, defense and order and health and necessity and will and honest enterprise, and each one the occlusion of the same operation: the cut, the occupation, the extraction, held by force and refusing cessation.
The war body justifies because it has refused the fire, and the justification is the substitute for the yielding it will not do. The soul that has entered the fire requires no justification, because it is not trespassing. Only the trespass needs a costume.
And none of these is the war body's in one century only. The culture keeps every one of them in daily currency with the costume on — the threat assigned, the rival named dangerous, the removal called health, the roundup called administration, the witness told she does not understand, the will called honor, the enrichment called success. The undisguised instance did not invent the wardrobe. It wore it without the lining, and that is the only reason it is legible as a wardrobe at all.
