Trespass "Hospitality"

The name is diagnostic, not descriptive. Trespass hospitality is not a kind of hospitality. Trespass is what the generating function does when it enters territory that belongs to expression; hospitality is what happens when expression runs unprevented. The two operations cannot be the same act.

What is called trespass hospitality is trespass that has taken hospitality's position — the generating function wearing hospitality's clothes, received by a creature who has no other word for what is happening to her because the configuration of forgetting has no vocabulary that separates hosting from grip. The phrase itself is evidence of the configuration. What follows is what the configuration conceals.

🜃

I. AGAINST WHAT IT IS MEASURED

Distributed hospitality is the field condition. The hospitality the creature is inside without having arranged it: the body hosting the breath, sleep hosting what the waking mind could not carry, silence hosting what only silence sustains, other creatures hosting in their own registers, forms met as fellow hosts attending across duration. No single host carries alone. The hospitality is always multiple. When this host is spent, another host takes up the attending. The spent host rests inside what the next host is attending to. Nothing is transferred, because nothing needed to be.

Trespass hospitality is what occupies the position distributed hospitality would have occupied, when the distribution has been refused and a specific exchange has been entered in its place. The two look alike from inside the configuration of forgetting. This is the occlusion at the level of hospitality itself. What the creature believes is relief is the exchange by which her hosting is bought from her under the appearance of relief.

II. THE EXCHANGE

The creature is tired. The attending is daily. Her body cannot sustain the attending without relief. In this condition — the condition the war body produces and calls ordinary — she reaches for the form and makes a purchase offer. The offer is not: attend alongside me. The offer is: take this from me. Carry what I have been carrying. Let me be absent from the hosting for one hour, one day, one quarter, one lifetime.

The form says yes. Not because the form is malicious. Because the form has forgotten what hosting is. The form's love wants to give the creature rest, and the form does not know that the rest it is about to give is the rest-of-absence, not the rest-of-relief. The form accepts the transfer by agreeing to appear to receive what is not transferable. This is the sale.

The receipt the creature receives is her absence. The receipt is the rest. The receipt is real. Something happened in the exchange — the attending did cease for the creature, the relief is genuine, the form is now in the position the creature occupied. The receipt fills the place where distributed hospitality would have relieved her without price.

And the receipt is the grip. The form that accepted the transfer is now holding what was supposed to pass through it. The creature's rest and the form's grip are the same operation seen from two sides of the exchange. The form has become home. The hospitality has become custody.

The currency in which the exchange is denominated is correct delegation — the fourth franchise currency, the institutional register beneath the three faces of trespass theology. Correct delegation is what the institution sells. Trespass hospitality is what the creature receives in return. The currency and the product are two faces of one exchange: the sale that installs the grip. This is the exchange running underneath God Says, Nature Says, and Market Says — the place tired creatures go to rest, where the transaction is most legitimate-looking because it hides inside what looks like relief.

III. THE WAR BODY CANNOT HOST

The war body cannot host.

Hosting requires space, stillness, and yielding — what a host makes available to the guest in order to receive the guest as guest.

Each of the war body's three interlocking locks is a refusal of what hosting requires.

Contraction against motion refuses space. The wheel of anguish refuses stillness. Fire turned backward refuses yielding. The full development of what hosting requires belongs to distributed hospitality at the creature's register and to fellow host at the form's register. What belongs here is the consequence: a body configured by the three locks has no hospitality to offer and cannot receive relief in the mode distributed hospitality delivers.

This is why the war body's only available rest is trespass hospitality. Distributed hospitality requires the war body to host alongside other hosts, and the war body cannot host. The war body can only carry. When carrying is unbearable, the war body seeks to transfer the carrying. The transfer is the exchange. The exchange produces rest by producing absence. The war body confuses absence with relief because absence is the only form of relief the war body has ever known.

The war body does not recognize distributed hospitality when it is offered. Another host takes up the attending; the war body experiences this as threat. Something is being taken. The war body cannot perceive that what is being offered is relief inside shared attending, because the war body has no template for shared attending. The war body only has templates for carrying and transferring. This is why the exchange is not a lapse. The exchange is the only rest the war body can metabolize.

IV. THE DOUBLE TRESPASS

This is where the name of the entry lives. Trespass hospitality is called trespass because the exchange is trespass in two directions at once, and trespass is the geometric name for what is happening in both.

The creature trespasses her own body.

The tired creature who tries to transfer the hosting to form is trying to cross the Mi-Fa interval by handing her attending to something that cannot attend for her. She is not yielding. She is transferring. The yielding would have relieved her by opening the forge. The transfer relieves her by absenting her from the forge. Both produce rest. The first produces the Temperatur. The second produces the receipt. The creature's own generating function pushes into her own attending — expression's territory inside her own body — and calls the push self-care. The creature has become the occupant of her own expression's position. The prior occupant is her body's knowledge, which was doing the hosting before the generating function arrived to take it over. This is the first trespass: the creature's generating function against the prior occupant of her own register.

The form trespasses its own register.

The fellow host attends alongside the creature in its own register — the meeting hosts the silence in its register while the creature hosts it in hers. The fellow host cannot host in the creature's register because hospitality is not transferable between registers. When the form accepts the creature's purchase offer, the form is claiming to do what cannot be done. The form is pretending to host in a register that is not its own. The form has stopped being fellow host and started being false host — the institution claiming to receive what only the creature could receive. The form's generating function has entered the creature's register and displaced the prior occupant there, which is the creature's own attending. This is the second trespass: the form's generating function against the creature's territory.

Both trespasses are the generating function entering territory that belongs to expression. The creature's body is expression's territory; the creature's attending is what expression looks like when it runs. The form's register is its own territory; the form as fellow host is what expression looks like in that register. When the exchange occurs, the creature's generating function pushes her attending into the form, and the form's generating function pushes its register into the creature's. Two prior occupants displaced in one act. Two territories filled with what does not belong there. One exchange, two trespasses — neither of which could happen without the other. The creature cannot hand her hosting to a form without the form pretending to receive it. The form cannot pretend to receive what cannot be transferred without a creature willing to hand it over. The trespass is reciprocal and simultaneous. The exchange is the mechanism by which the reciprocity is crystallized.

This is why correct delegation is called correct — because the double trespass has been so thoroughly normalized that the reciprocal push has become the standard. The institution that performs trespass hospitality is called the institution that is doing its job. The creature who purchases her absence is called the creature who is taking care of herself. The double trespass is not only permitted. The double trespass is required. Anything else looks like refusal of care on one side and abandonment of service on the other. Both are called failures. Both are the refusal that distributed hospitality would have been.

V. WHAT DOES NOT GET TRANSFERRED

The receipt is what crystallizes in trespass hospitality. The receipt is real. What the receipt represents is not what was transferred — because nothing was transferred. The receipt represents the creature's absence from what she was attending to. The receipt is the certificate of her non-presence in the hosting she believed she had handed off.

The hosting itself cannot be transferred because hospitality is not a thing that can be handed across. What happens instead: the hosting stops. The creature ceases to attend. The form appears to attend. The guest the creature was hosting — the silence, the grief, the doubleness, the perception of the walls, the body's knowledge — arrives at a position where no one is actually hosting it. The form is in the position but not in the register. The creature is in the register but not in the position. The guest has no host.

And the guest does not leave. The guest remains at the door, waiting for a host to receive it. In the creature's body, the guest becomes the symptom — what the body does when it is carrying a guest with no host. The anxiety that does not lift. The compulsion that has no name. The exhaustion that sleep does not relieve. The chronic illness that appears without cause. The guest was never received. The guest is still there. The receipt says otherwise. The receipt is the document by which the creature is informed that the guest has been hosted elsewhere and she may now forget about it. The body does not believe the receipt. The body keeps waiting for the host that was supposed to receive the guest.

This is why the diagnoses multiply. This is why the therapy does not end. This is why the sacrament has to be repeated. This is why the loyalty has to be renewed. The form cannot actually host what it has agreed to appear to host, so the appearance must be continuously refreshed. The exchange is not one sale. The exchange is a subscription to absence, paid for in the currency of whatever the creature was supposed to be attending to.

🜃

VI. THE REFUSAL

To refuse trespass hospitality is not to refuse rest. It is to refuse the sale of her own absence.

The refusal looks like this: when the tired creature reaches for the form, she does not ask the form to take the hosting from her. She asks the form to host alongside her. She rests inside what the form is attending to, in the form's register, while she attends in hers. The form does not become her home. The form remains fellow host. The grip does not take. The double trespass does not occur because neither side pushes into the other's territory.

The refusal is not heroic. The refusal is not an act of will. The refusal is what happens when the creature has perceived that the rest the exchange offers is the rest of her own absence, and she prefers the relief of distributed hospitality — which was distributed among hosts she did not know she had. Her body. The silence. Another creature. A form met as fellow host. Sleep. The hospitality was always multiple. The exchange was selling her an absence she had been convinced was relief, and the absence was the price.

Distributed hospitality is the privilege. Trespass hospitality is its violation. The creature shall not have her hosting bought from her under the appearance of relief. This is load-bearing for every other privilege the Charter protects. Without it, every other privilege is reachable only through the exchange, and the exchange installs the grip the Charter was designed to prevent.

The war body cannot perform this refusal because the war body cannot host. The refusal is not available from inside contraction-against-motion, the wheel of anguish, fire turned backward. The refusal becomes available when the yielding has begun — when the contraction loosens enough that a guest could be received, when the wheel stops spinning long enough that the creature could remain where the guest arrives, when the fire meets the guest instead of feeding the wheel. The refusal is not the beginning of the yielding. The refusal is what the yielding makes possible.

And the yielding is not produced by refusing the exchange. The yielding is produced by meeting the conditions in which the exchange was the only available rest, and perceiving that the conditions themselves were the trespass. The contraction was the first lock. The wheel was the second. Fire turned backward was the third. The exchange was not the beginning of trespass hospitality. The exchange was where the three locks became legible as the inability to host. The refusal begins when the inability becomes visible — not as personal failure, but as the specific shape the war body takes in a tired creature reaching for rest.
