Court's Virtue

the classical virtues are the generating function's operations dressed in the vocabulary of character — and the word the court uses for them is the same word Böhme uses for the Power of the Light.

🜃

There is a word for the Power of the Light. Böhme's word. Virtue — the Kraft, the proceeding-out, what the Light produces when the Light shines, the capacity that goes forth from Light into what Light illuminates. Heaven is materialized Virtue. Every stone is Virtue's Ray. The word names the second law's own power, the operation that runs when nothing prevents it.

The court took the word. What the court calls virtue is the generating function's operations wearing the vocabulary of character — the same word, turned to name the precise things that prevent the Power of the Light from going forth. Two faces of one word. The court's virtue is not a lesser virtue, not virtue imperfectly practiced. It is the prevention of Virtue, performed by the creature, experienced by the creature as moral achievement. The capture is at the level of conscience, which is the deepest level the court reaches. [See VIRTUE — Böhme's Power of the Light, the word's redeemed face.]

VIRTUE AS THE COURT'S THIRD CURRENCY

Honor is the court's first currency, trust its second, justice its fourth. Virtue is the third, and it is the one that captures the creature's own self-assessment. Honor disciplines the creature from outside — the withdrawal of honor is administered as the creature's dishonor. Trust disciplines the creature's legibility — the court's ability to foresee her output. Virtue does something neither of those does: it installs the court's coordinates inside the creature's conscience, so that the creature performing the generating function's operations experiences the performance as her own moral achievement.

The virtuous creature is not coerced. The virtuous creature is the creature who has taken the court's coordinates as the structure of the good and now polices herself against her own deviation from them, grading her own conduct by whether it produced the court's ease, and calling the high grades virtue. The court no longer has to discipline her. She disciplines herself, in the court's vocabulary, and calls the self-discipline character.

THE FOUR CLASSICAL VIRTUES, DECODED

The classical virtues — prudence, temperance, fortitude, and the justice that is the court's fourth currency — are not four goods the generating function happens to honor. Each is one of the generating function's operations, named as a quality of character, experienced by the creature performing it as moral attainment.

Prudence is navigation.

The prudent creature scans the field of available configurations and selects the one the court would have selected, and calls the selecting wisdom. This is the generating function's Quality 3 — the observer, the one who stands outside and surveys the options — operating as the creature's deliberation and wearing the name of practical wisdom. The creature experiences prudence as the careful weighing of what is best. What is operating is the audit position, the standing-outside from which configurations appear as options to be selected among, rather than the participation from which the act simply manifests. Prudence is the measurement high delivered as moral self-regard. [See NAVIGATION · THE MEASUREMENT HIGH.]

Temperance is the prevention of the kindling sequence.

The temperate creature does not yield to the fire — she manages it. She controls the tears that would form the yielding-field, suppresses the gall that would kindle, maintains composure where the heart would have warmed and the throat opened and the voice carried roughness. The kindling sequence is the body's passage toward the crossing. Temperance is the interruption of that passage, performed by the creature on her own body, and named self-mastery. The creature who would have yielded is told — and tells herself — that the refusal to yield is the higher achievement. Temperance is the war body's discipline experienced as the soul's. [See THE KINDLING SEQUENCE.]

Fortitude is the Wheel celebrated.

The creature who continues to generate when the generating function's operations have become painful — who stays on the Wheel of anguish despite the anguish, who endures, copes, manages, returns to her original shape after each deformation — is courageous. The creature who steps off the Wheel has not transcended it; she has quit, given up, failed to endure. Fortitude is the worship of the Wheel's own rotation, named strength. It is the resilience the religion makes its central therapeutic sacrament — the capacity to return to the configuration that needed to die — installed in the creature as her own courage. [See THE IMPOTENCE · CAPTIVATION.]

Each is genuine, as experience.

The creature performing prudence is genuinely deliberating. The creature performing temperance is genuinely exercising control. The creature performing fortitude is genuinely enduring. The experience is not fake. The moral vocabulary is the generating function's most complete capture precisely because it does not feel like capture — it feels like character, like the creature's own hard-won goodness. The creature has been formatted at the level of conscience, and a creature formatted at the level of conscience defends the formatting as her integrity.

WHAT THE COURT'S VIRTUE PREVENTS

The court's virtue prevents the second law's participation from occurring. The virtuous creature manages her fire rather than yielding to it; the creature who would participate — who would enter the field, be changed by what she encounters, allow the Harshness to sink down and be soft — has abandoned virtue. The whole of the second law's participation is the yielding the court's virtue exists to prevent, and the prevention is administered not as prohibition but as the creature's own aspiration to be good.

This is why virtue is the court's most efficient currency. Honor can be refused by a creature willing to be called dishonorable. Trust can be forfeited by a creature willing to be illegible. But virtue is refused only by a creature willing to experience her own refusal as a moral failure — willing to let the tears come and call the coming good, to let the gall kindle and not name the kindling a lapse in self-mastery, to step off the Wheel and not hear the stepping-off as cowardice. The court's virtue has installed the creature's conscience as its enforcement, so that the creature's own sense of the good guards the prevention. To refuse the court's virtue, the creature must be willing to feel like she is becoming worse at the exact moment she is becoming free.

THE WORD RETURNED

The two faces of the word are not symmetrical, and the asymmetry is the entry's point. Böhme's Virtue is what goes forth when nothing prevents it — the Power of the Light, not a thing the creature does but a thing that proceeds. The court's virtue is what the creature does to prevent it. One is manifestation; the other is performance. One is the Ray proceeding from the longing that produced the thing; the other is the management of the body so that nothing proceeds.

The creature who yields — who lets the kindling sequence run, who steps off the Wheel, who participates rather than navigates — has not become un-virtuous. She has stopped performing the court's virtue and become available to Böhme's. What the court called her temperance was the prevention of the warmth; what the court called her fortitude was the worship of the Wheel; what the court called her prudence was the standing-outside that cannot participate. When those cease, the Power of the Light is not something she achieves. It is what proceeds, now that the performance that prevented it has stopped.

🜃

The court's virtue is the generating function's operations wearing the vocabulary of character, installed at the level of conscience, defended by the creature as her own goodness. It prevents the participation the second law runs on, and it prevents it most securely because it has made the prevention feel like virtue and the yielding feel like vice. The word the court uses is the word for the Power of the Light. The court uses it for the operations that prevent the Light from going forth.
