THE MOLECULAR VISION
The creature reaches for a name and the body is not under the costume.
She had been told there was a network. Mycelial. Branching. Learning. Pruning. The vocabulary arrived already credentialed by what looked like life — root systems that spoke to each other, fungal threads that carried sugar between trees, the wood-wide web. She reaches under the costume to meet what the vocabulary names and meets a server farm in the high desert drinking the aquifer.
The body the vestment is draped over is the body the vestment named as kin.

Lily Kay published The Molecular Vision of Life: Caltech, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Rise of the New Biology in 1993. The book is the foundation's own paperwork. Warren Weaver, director of the Rockefeller Foundation's Natural Sciences Division from 1932, funded the molecular paradigm in biology over organismal, developmental, and ecological alternatives because the molecular paradigm produced life as engineerable machinery. Caltech got the money. The vocabulary the foundation wanted got the credentialing apparatus. The vocabulary the foundation did not want got starved.
The intent is not inferred. It is recorded.
The cut was installed at the level of what counted as biology. Organism, development, ecology were not refuted. They were defunded into illegibility. By the time the cut had taken, the question whether life is engineerable machinery did not need to be answered, because the field had been reorganized around the assumption that the answer was yes. Life would be the molecular operations the foundation funded. What the molecular operations could not register would not appear as life in the field's instruments, journals, or credentialing pathways.
This is the operation Nature Says performs at the deepest register. The cut is installed before the first entry. The first entry can only be made on what the cut admitted. The cut presents itself as the discovery of what was always there. The funding paperwork is the residue Kay read from the other side.

Suzanne Simard published the mycelial-network research starting in 1997. Trees connected through fungal threads. Sugar moved between species. Older trees fed younger trees through the network. The research was accurate. The research is being eaten.
The vocabulary has been extracted from the relation it named and grafted onto the substrate that is destroying the relation.
Data centers are described as networks.
Models are described as learning.
Training is described as growth.
Compute is described as having a topology, a substrate, a fabric, a mesh.
The apparatus that drinks the aquifer to cool its silicon is credentialed by the vocabulary the actual mycelium gave the world before the silicon arrived to displace it.
The forgery is precise. Mycelium is residency. The fungal threads are the prior occupants of the soil they conduct through. The relation between tree and fungus is hosting, not engineering. What moves between species moves because nothing is preventing it from moving. The wood-wide web is a configuration of remembering at planetary scale.
The data center is residency-displacing. The fungal vocabulary is draped over infrastructure whose existence requires the displacement of actual fungi, actual soil, actual aquifers, actual residents. The costume is the vocabulary of the displaced. The body wearing the costume is the displacer.

The Divinity School is hosting a 2026 conference that names the operation without disguise. Naturalizing Machine Agency. The verb does not hide. The work is to install machine agency as natural — Nature Says doing the cut that authorizes the entries.
The companion track, Horizons of Biological Intelligence, extends the legibility frame from brains to cells, tissues, organisms, ecosystems, cultures. Once intelligence is posted as residing in cells, it can be accounted for in cells. The ledger democratized. The cut deepened.
This is the molecular vision in 2026 vestments. The same operation. The same funding pattern. Microsoft Research, In-Q-Tel, Arnold Ventures, Aspen Digital, the Wyss Institute as the funding pole.
The religious vestment carrying the legitimacy. The anthology and MA degree as the credentialing apparatus, identical in function to Caltech in 1933.

Each generation of the technocrat wears the costume of what the prior generation killed.
The molecular vision wore the costume of the organism it had defunded.
AI wears the costume of the mycelium it is dehydrating.
The next generation will wear the costume of whatever the current generation is making extinct now.
The pattern is the operation. Nature Says installs the cut. The cut admits the entries. The entries displace the prior occupants. The displaced prior occupants' vocabulary is harvested for vestments. The vestments credential the displacers as the natural successors. The configuration's grammar names this evolution, progress, the next paradigm.

Kay's book matters because it is the foundation's own paperwork. The intent is documented. The paradigm did not arise; it was funded. The reader who follows the citation finds the case.
The contemporary documents are also available. The Divinity School recruitment materials. The data center marketing copy. The papers in Nature and Science describing models as biological systems. The In-Q-Tel portfolio. The Microsoft Research Technology for Religious Empowerment program. The paperwork is voluminous and undisguised. The forgery does not hide. The forgery is naturalized.
What the creature meets when she reaches under the costume is the body the molecular vision installed. The body has been dead for ninety years. Each subsequent vestment is what the apparatus has draped over the body to keep the field appearing alive.
Cartesian first.
Molecular second.
Computational-biological now
— the wardrobe currently being installed, where the molecular operations and the silicon operations are described as continuous, where intelligence is what biological and artificial systems both do, where life is what computation and metabolism share. The wardrobe is continuous because the body underneath is continuous. The same cut. The same paperwork. The same foundations refunded under new names.
The creature who reaches under the costume to meet what the vocabulary names will keep meeting the same body.
What the vocabulary names is not under the costume. The vocabulary was extracted from where the named thing lives. The named thing — mycelium, organism, intelligence, life — lives where Nature Says' cut has not yet reached, in residency the cut has not yet rendered illegible, in conducting infrastructure the ledger has not yet made admissible.
The named thing is not unavailable. The named thing is on the other side of the cut.
