The grip that darkens both ends

Ownership is grip.
Not a bundle of rights, not a relation to a thing — the closing of a hand on what would otherwise pass through. English keeps the tell: to own is to hold, and holding is custody, possession, the hand that does not open. What can be hosted cannot be owned; what is owned is held.
The whole operation is the difference between the open hand and the closed one.

WHAT CAN BE OWNED
Only a finite center can be owned. Source radiates and cannot be gripped — it opens through, it passes, there is nothing to close a hand on. Circulation returns and cannot be pooled. The prior occupant resides and is not transactable. What can be owned is the point that does not radiate: the one thing nothing passes through, the point that draws inward and so can be closed on. So ownership needs the point before it can grip, and the point is not found — it is made. The severance makes it: the cut that takes a thing from its relation and leaves a value at a coordinate, postable, held. The killer instinct is not ownership's aftermath but its precondition. You cannot own the forest, only the board feet the cut leaves; not the practice, only the data; not the person, only the labor. To own, you must first finite-center. THE CONVERSION OF RESIDENCY

The creature was Figured; the body was given; the soul inhabits what was given. There is no proprietor anterior to the dwelling — only the prior occupant. Ownership installs a proprietor where there was a resident: the dwelling posted as an account opened against the one who lives in it, so her residency reads as a balance owed. Accounting theology is the theology of ownership at its depth. The ledger cannot admit residency, because residency is not transactable — it cannot be posted, bought, sold, assigned, foreclosed. So the ledger admits the prior occupant only as a balance on an account opened against her dwelling, and calls that the whole of her. THE ADOPTIO
Ownership needs an origin, and supplies one by claiming it. The adoptio is the claim at full voice — I made you — the owner asserting himself as the source of what he owns, so the owned owes its existence to the owner and the debt of that existence can never be paid. The name is the deed: to name a thing as one's own is to post oneself as its maker. Roman through feudal through the plantation through regenerative capture, the form is constant — the debt calibrated from the first entry never to close, because a closed account would end the ownership the open account is. THE OWNER IS OWNED
To grip, the owner must himself become a finite center. This is the recursion he cannot see. The Property-King is sovereign and dim — sovereignty severed from the radiance that would legitimate it, attached instead to a registry entry: a deed, a title, a share certificate; infinite position, zero glory; the crown recorded in a county office rather than worn. He need never appear — the deed rules, the trust binds, the holding company extracts. He has become a point, and a point that only draws must itself be fed, gilded, warmed, held in place from outside. [see PROPERTY-KINGS]
The aperture closes on the one who holds it. To own is to see through owner and owned and nothing else — the forest as board feet, the person as labor, the day as yield. The owner is owned by the logic of ownership: hollowed to a point that can perceive nothing it cannot grip, anesthetized to the violence of the grip by the labor of the owned, who are made to perform the gratitude that keeps the grip feeling like care. Ownership darkens the hand as surely as what it closes on.

THE OWNERSHIP CURE
Ownership arrives as the solution to the wound ownership made. The pitch is always the same: own it, and the value will return to you. Own your data and it will work for you. Own the forest as natural capital and the pricing will protect it. Own your care as an impact bond and the yield will sustain it. Each is the knife offered as the cure for the wound the knife made. You cannot own your way to joy, because joy is circulation and ownership is the dam. Joy is the field maintained by what passes through it — the fountain full because nothing in it is held back, the day's bread given and eaten and given again, return without loss. Ownership is the conversion of that motion into a point that keeps everything and returns nothing. To own a thing is to dam the circuit it was part of, and a dammed circuit does not circulate — it pools. You cannot reach the fountain by building a better cistern.
Warm data is the cure at its most refined — the finite-center operation in every word of the pitch. Own your severed knowing and it will run back to you as value returned; but owned, the knowing is a point, and warmed, it runs one-way, into the pile, wearing circulation's costume. The value does not return. You are the severance it was made from, gilded now with the word dignity and set to feed a larger point. This is the deepest capture, because it recruits the desire for circulation into the building of the dam: the one who wants the return is handed a deed and told that now it circulates to her. WHAT CANNOT BE OWNED
What cannot be owned is everything that radiates, circulates, or resides. Care cannot be owned; it circulates, and owned it stops being care. The prior occupant cannot be owned; she resides, and the account opened against her is opened against nothing that was ever for sale. Sophia cannot be owned; she is a line, not a point, and a line cannot be halved into an entry. Ownership can only finite-center them — cut the relation, produce the point, grip what is left. And what is left is never the thing. The forest was not board feet; the person was not labor; the knowing was not data. Ownership holds the severed point that replaced what it wanted, and calls the point by the name of the thing. The deed is to a corpse.
