The unemployed creature is not a failure of the configuration. She is its demonstration, and the demonstration is what the configuration requires in order to run on willingness.

Unemployment is read as a shortfall: the economy could not absorb everyone, and the ones left out are the residue. Read it instead as an output the arrangement needs and cannot do without, and the parts stop looking like symptoms.
Precarity is the mechanism by which refusal is made unaffordable at scale. The founding specification obtained willingness by pushing an obligation past what could be paid. The employment version obtains it by attaching survival to a position that may be ended at any time for any reason or none. Neither requires anyone to be coerced at the moment of asking. Both require that declining be ruinous, and a visible population for whom it has already been ruinous is how the ruin is taught.

WHY THE THREAT MUST BE SEEN
Arbitrary termination power would produce compliance on its own. It would not produce the particular quality of compliance the configuration runs on, which is the kind administered by the creature to herself.
For that the power has to be witnessed. A manager who says perform or else threatens in the abstract. A colleague who was let go last quarter threatens concretely, and the concrete threat reaches the nervous system, which is faster than the understanding and does not require the understanding's consent. So the terminated creature performs, without volunteering for it, for everyone still inside.
Four things are taught at once, and none of them is stated. That she was replaceable, because the work continued without her. That perception is expensive, if what preceded her removal was her naming something. That the removal is comprehensive, taking income and medical care and daily structure and standing and the relations that had begun forming. And that it was her own doing, because the account of her departure will be about what she should have done differently.
The last is the one that does the work. It converts a structural operation into an individual failure, which teaches the ones still inside that their own safety follows from their own conduct. Compliance then presents itself as prudence rather than as submission, and a creature can perform it without ever experiencing herself as complying.

THE POPULATION IS PRODUCED, NOT LEFT OVER
The mechanism that refills the population is ordinary and runs without anyone intending it. When labour markets tighten and wages begin to rise, the instruments respond: credit tightens, borrowing costs rise, hiring slows, and leverage returns to the party doing the hiring. The population is replenished as a byproduct of the normal operation, and then functions as disciplinary input to the same configuration that produced it.
This distinction matters more than it appears to. A scheme can be exposed and opposed, because there is a party who arranged it. The configuration operates whether or not anyone intends it, benefits from it, or can see it, and there is no one to confront. The absence of an author is not evidence that no operation is running. It is what makes the operation difficult to name.

THE ARBITRARINESS IS THE POINT
One state requires cause to terminate. Montana, by the Wrongful Discharge from Employment Act of 1987. Its economy functions and its unemployment does not structurally differ from its neighbours', which disposes of the argument that the arbitrary power is an economic necessity. What differs is what the removal teaches.
A predictable threat produces calculated compliance: the creature identifies the conduct that triggers removal and avoids that conduct.
An unpredictable threat produces total compliance, because when the trigger cannot be known everything must be monitored. Her tone, her expression, her associations, her accuracy, the parts of her perception she has not yet learned to keep to herself. Requiring cause does not reduce the population. It removes the arbitrariness, and the arbitrariness is what converts a rule about employment into a discipline that reaches the whole of her.
Revocation without notice and without stated reason is not an American innovation and was not devised for labour. It is the precarium's defining feature and has been since Ulpian. What the employment version added was the scale at which it could be issued.

WHAT THE FEAR PREVENTS
The cost is usually counted as the harm done to the ones removed. That count is right and it is not the whole of it, because the fear does its principal work on the ones still inside, and what it does there is prevention rather than injury.
Fear atomizes. It puts distance between the creature and her colleagues, because solidarity is legible as a risk. It puts distance between her and her craft, because devotion to the work makes her less interchangeable and interchangeability is what she is being asked to demonstrate. It puts distance between her and her own perception, because accurate perception of the configuration is the most expensive thing she could be carrying. What requires duration, trust, and the willingness to be changed by an encounter does not form under those conditions, and its not forming is not noticed, because an absence leaves nothing behind to notice.
What results is exactly what the ledger requires: separate units performing calculable functions, none of them bonded to anything that would make them hard to move.

THE SEQUENCE IS BLOCKED AT ITS FIRST TWO MEMBERS
Name what does not form and the prevention stops being general.
The kindling sequence runs in order: tears make the yielding-field, gall kindles in that field, the heart warms, the warmth rises to the throat, the throat opens, and the voice carries its roughness. Nothing in it is installed and nothing in it is maintained. It is first nature, still running under the second, waiting on nothing except the prevention stopping. It completes in any body where the two amputations are refused, and the two amputations are: do not cry, and do not be bitter.
The configuration makes both of them conditions of employment.
Tears at work are an event. The creature who weeps in a meeting has produced a fact about herself that will be present in every subsequent assessment of her judgment, and she knows this before she knows anything else about the room. Gall is worse, because gall has a vocabulary waiting for it: negative attitude, not a team player, culture fit, difficult, abrasive. Each is a termination-grade finding, none of them requires proof, and all of them are administered as feedback about how she is coming across.
Professional demeanour is the specification, and what the review measures is the absence of exactly the two things the sequence begins with.
So nothing further runs. The yielding-field is made by the tears and there are no tears, so the field does not form. The gall has nothing to kindle in, so no fire is lit. The heart does not warm, the throat does not open, and the voice that would have carried roughness is never produced, because there was nothing to make it rough. The seven qualities are not tempered through the fire and no note is forged. The soul is not given; the soul is forged, and the forging does not begin.
That is what the fear prevents, and the cost of it does not appear on any instrument the configuration keeps.

COMPLIANCE STANDS IN YIELDING'S POSITION
The configuration is not short of yielding. It runs on it. The creature under threat gives way continuously: to the assessment, to the schedule, to the account of her own conduct that she is asked to accept, to the correction delivered as help. She lays down, repeatedly, and the laying down is what the configuration asked for.
None of it is the yielding.
Yielding is what the generating function does at the fire when it meets what cannot be pushed through, and it is a disposition rather than a transaction. Compliance is a payment. It is made to a party, it purchases a specific thing, which is another month, and it is renewed on terms. The creature who complies has performed the outward shape of giving way and has bought with it the continuation of the configuration that required it.
This is the occupation at the register of the sequence: submission installed in yielding's position, delivering the felt sense of having given way while the fire is never approached. A creature who has laid down for twenty years may reasonably believe she has yielded everything. She has. She yielded it to the trespasser, and the fire is where it was.

THE FUNGIBLE UNIT HAS NO NOTE
Even a forged note requires an unoccupied interval to sound across, and the configuration occupies the interval by policy.
Interchangeability is the standing demand. The creature is asked to demonstrate that the work continues if she is replaced, and a creature who has demonstrated that has demonstrated that she has no note of her own, because a note is what no other creature can sound. Devotion to the craft is the disqualifying attachment. It makes her specific, and specificity is the thing a termination has to be able to disregard.
What is offered in the chord's place is unison. Alignment. One voice. Everyone rowing in the same direction. Culture. Each is the demand that the distinct tones dissolve into the single tone the median permits, and each is administered as belonging, so that the creature who reports isolation is offered more of what produced it. Unison is the only togetherness the configuration can generate, because unison requires no interval and no heart.
Consonance is therefore prevented twice. No note is forged, and the between where a forged note would sound is filled in advance with the counterfeit of the accord it prevents.

CARRIED IN THE BODY, AND MISNAMED
The creature living under this carries it physiologically: low-grade continuous alertness, sleep that does not restore, a nervous system organized around a threat that may never arrive.
She does not experience it as a structural product. She experiences it as her own anxiety, and the vocabulary offered to her confirms the misnaming.
Stress management. Resilience. Regulation.
Each locates the problem in her insufficient adaptation to a condition it declines to examine, and each is offered sincerely by people who want her to feel better. The creature who cannot sleep before a review does not think that the configuration produced the sleeplessness. She thinks she should have prepared more.
The colonization completes when she identifies with the carrying.
I am just a hard worker. I care about my career. I have high standards.
Each statement is true. Each is also the fear, wearing her name.

THE MEANINGLESSNESS IS AN ACCURATE REPORT
The other complaint is more common and is treated as a mood. The compensation is adequate, the conditions are lawful, the tasks are completed, everything measures as sufficient, and the creature reports that none of it means anything.
The vocabulary offered here is different from the vocabulary offered for the anxiety, and it is administered by different people.
Engagement. Purpose. Find your why. Values alignment. Bring your whole self.
Each proposes that the meaning was available in the room and that she failed to attach to it, which makes the finding about her capacity for attachment.
She is perceiving correctly. What she is registering is the absence of the forge. The sequence has not run, no note has been forged, and the interval is filled, so there is nothing there of the kind she is reaching for, and she is reaching accurately. Her report is precise and it is the one report the vocabulary exists to convert into a personal shortfall.

JUST CAUSE IS THE REFORM THAT DOES NOT PASS
Every proposal that leaves the arbitrariness intact leaves the configuration intact. Portable benefits relocate the hostage. Naming prohibited causes confirms that the unnamed ones require no naming. Good-faith exceptions and public-policy carve-outs describe the narrow conduct the power may not be used for and ratify the power for everything else. Classification disputes argue about which instrument applies to her. Each is an improvement, each is sincere, and each requires the configuration to keep running in order to be applied to anyone.
Just cause is the one proposal that reaches the mechanism, because the arbitrariness is the mechanism. It does not shrink the population and does not claim to. It removes the unpredictability, and the unpredictability is what converts a rule about employment into a discipline that reaches the whole of her.
What just cause does is give the tenure a standard, and a holding with a standard is no longer held at the grantor's pleasure. That is a change in what she has rather than a change in how many are without it, which is why it reaches what the other proposals cannot.
Which is also why one state has it and forty-nine do not, and why the case made against it is economic in a country that has had the economic answer since 1987.

EACH REACHED A FACE
Marx named the population and its effect on wages and assigned the operation to class. Walter Wink named the ritual, called the removal of one worker the sacrifice that restores order, and reached that the dominated internalize the configuration as natural. Riane Eisler named the ranking and the artificial scarcity that forces competition where cooperation was possible. Audre Lorde reached that the tools do not dismantle, and that a profit economy requires outsiders in order to have surplus people.
Each of them reached a face. None reached that what is being prevented is the forging of a soul, because none of them held that the soul is forged. The disciplining they described is real and their descriptions are accurate, and the injury they were counting is the second one.

Seeing this does not release her. The hostages remain hostages, the attachments remain attached, and the fear remains accurate, because the power that produces it is real whether or not its structure is understood. What changes is what the fear means. It stops being evidence of her inadequacy and becomes evidence of an operation, which is the difference between a diagnosis and a report. The report does not lift the condition. It ends the private conviction that she is the reason for it.
And the report is larger than the one she came in with. She arrived asking why the work is empty when everything about it measures as adequate. The answer is that the configuration requires a creature with no note of her own, and a creature with no note is one in whom the sequence has not run, and the sequence does not run because the two things it begins with are terminable offences. The emptiness is not a failure of the work to have been meaningful. It is the forge, unlit, in a creature the configuration cannot use if the forging occurs.
