First nature is the resident. Not a disposition, not a trait, not a better self held in reserve — the one who was in the body before the occupation, present under it, present now. Second nature is what was installed: the garrison dissolved into gait and grammar and preference, the forgetting transferred into the musculature and billed to the forgetter as character. First nature is what the installation was laid over. It was never installed, and so it cannot be uninstalled. It waits on nothing but the prevention stopping.

THE RESIDENT, NOT A DISPOSITION
Second nature is dispositions — acquired, trained, maintained, re-enlisted every morning. A disposition is a thing you have; it can be added, and what can be added can be removed.
First nature is not a thing you have. It is what you are underneath what was added. This is the distinction the word nature obscures, because it makes both sound like properties of a self, when one is the self's installed costume and the other is the resident the costume was fitted onto. The pre-procedural register — the part that detects the signature, that registers the wrongness in the warm room before any vocabulary arrives, that knows the smooth word is carrying something — was never trained, because it is not trainable. It is not a capacity added to the resident. It is the resident. You cannot teach it and you cannot unteach it, because it is prior to the register where teaching operates.

NOT A HISTORY
First nature is not a past. It was never a history, and it does not need to be remembered, because it never stopped being present. This is what separates it from everything the configuration offers in its place. Recall would retrieve it as content — but it is not content, and reciting it changes nothing. Re-membering would reassemble it as a golden age — but it was not dis-membered, and the reassembly builds a body that rules the dead. Return would harvest it as increase — but it produces nothing severable. First nature is present the entire duration of its supposed absence, under the second nature, running. The turn does not travel to it. There is no journey to first nature, no recovery of it, no restoration — because it never left the place the turn is performed. It is what stands when the facing that read it as gone ceases to face inward.

WHY IT CANNOT BE REACHED, ONLY UNPREVENTED
The asymmetry is the whole of it, and it is the asymmetry the SECOND NATURE entry names from the other side. Second nature requires continuous active maintenance — the enforcement re-enlisting unpaid every morning, the crystal held frozen by ongoing work, the books posted second by second against the resident they read as not-there. First nature requires nothing added. It is what is there when the maintenance stops. The kindling sequence is first nature still running under the second: the tears, the gall, the warming heart, the opening throat — none of it installed, none of it maintained, all of it waiting on nothing but the prevention stopping. The three locks release not because heat is applied from outside but because the heat was first nature's own, refused. This is why the exit from second nature is not demolition and not a better regimen. A discipline imposed on the body to correct the occupation is a third nature — the same economy under new management, another set of dispositions installed over the resident, another maintenance billed to another account. First nature is neither the occupation nor the discipline that would replace it. It is the ground both are laid over and neither can reach, because reaching is the wrong verb. First nature is not reached. It is un-prevented.

THE PRIOR OCCUPANT OF THE BODY
The prior occupant is one structure operating at three registers. At the register of land, the occupation forgets the prior occupant so the territory reads empty and can be seized. At the register of the account, the substrate carrying the prior occupant's record is left to die so that even after the occupier falls there is nothing to recover. At the register of the body, first nature is the prior occupant — the resident the second-nature occupation was laid over, forgotten so the body reads as its dispositions and nothing underneath. The body is the occupied territory and it is also the prior occupant's instrument, and the occupation never fully enlisted it. First nature is that unenlisted remainder: the resident the occupation could not convert, present the whole time, misperceived as absent because the configuration does continuous work to sustain the misperception. To re-turn is to perceive the prior occupant of one's own body again — not to import a self but to cease reading the resident as gone.

THE LIMIT
First nature at the register of the body is inalienable. The boot operates on the axis; the resident is perpendicular; the boot can stamp without pause and never reach it, because it is not on the axis the boot occupies. This is real, and it is the ground of every refusal the soul can make. But the inalienability does not transfer, and transferring it is the error. The collective register has no such guarantee. The prior occupant's account, carried by mortal substrate — archive, transmission, the community that keeps its own books — can be destroyed, and the final forgetting is its destruction. A single body's first nature cannot be killed; a people's carried account can. So first nature does not license the belief that because the resident is safe, the substrate is safe. The resident is inalienable. The substrate is mortal and must be tended. The soul that has only the first fact will let the account die while resting in its own unstampable perpendicular. Both are true. First nature is the ground of the turn; tending is the labor the turn does not exempt. [See SECOND NATURE. See TENDING THE SUBSTRATE. See THE FINAL FORGETTING.]

First nature is what was there, refused. Not the true self to be recovered — that is the healing journey, the franchise of wholeness, a third nature sold as liberation. Not a past to be restored — that is re-membering, the reassembly that rules the dead. First nature is the resident of the body, present under the occupation, running the kindling sequence, waiting on nothing but the refusal ceasing. It does not need to be remembered because it never stopped being present. It needs only to stop being prevented.
