The belonging is real, and its price is a silence. Not a fee paid once at the door — a covering paid continuously, every moment the body is not named, paid so smoothly it is felt as loyalty and never as a price. To name the body is not to risk exile. The naming is the exile. The naming and the leaving are one act.

THE COVERING
The place inside the occupation is purchased. The currency is not money and not labor; it is the not-naming of the body — the harm in the room, the person the room moved against, the emperor's nakedness, the innocence of the one the room is discharging onto. The member pays by not naming it, and pays again the next moment, and again. The fee is continuous because the covering must be continuous: one naming ends the membership.
The payment does not feel like payment. It feels like loyalty [see LOYALTY]. The member experiences the not-naming as fidelity to the room — discretion, maturity, being a good colleague, not making it weird. The fee is collected in the currency of belonging and felt as the virtue of the one who pays it. This is why it does not register as a cost. A cost is something you notice paying. The membership fee is paid as an identity.

THE NAMING IS THE EXILE
The member who names the body is not punished. There is no tribunal, no sentence, no expulsion that follows the naming as its consequence. The naming and the exile are one, because the membership was the not-naming. To name is to have already stopped paying the fee, and to stop paying the fee is to be, already, outside.
The room does not throw her out. She named, and the naming placed her outside the same instant, and the room's coldness towards her afterward is not the punishment — it is the shape of the outside she is now standing in [see HETEROPATHY].
This is what makes the fee invisible to the one still paying it. She cannot see the fee, because from inside there is no transaction — only belonging, only loyalty, only the ordinary silence that feels like decency. [See HEGEL: BARBARISM • COURT-ESY ] She sees the exile fall on the one who named and reads it as consequence, as the namer having done something. The namer did one thing. She stopped covering.

ONE STRUCTURE, TWO TEMPERATURES
The emperor's clothes and the scapegoat are one structure at two temperatures. The emperor's clothes is the cool form: the crowd sees the nakedness, no one names it, the membership is the shared silence, and the child who names it is not punished — the child is simply the one no longer inside the crowd's agreement. The scapegoat is the hot form: the room discharges its accumulated rivalry onto a single body, no one names the innocence or the arbitrariness, and the peace requires that the body not be named [see THE CENTRAL SACRAMENT]. Cool or hot, the fee is the same — the price of the place is not naming the body. The child and the one who names the scapegoat pay the same exit [see THE COMPLICITY FACTORY].
The cruelty is that the belonging is real. The fee does not buy a counterfeit membership the creature could shrug off. It buys warmth, place, inclusion, the actual thing — and the actual thing is what naming costs. The one who names does not lose a fiction. She loses the real belonging, and she loses it the instant she speaks, and the belonging was real the whole time she was paying for it in silence [see BELONGING].
