THE GILDING

The credential of worth laid over the pull. Leaf over lead.

The gild reads as gold, and the lead beneath it is never sent to the fire. The creature is awarded, credentialed, honored, ranked — and untransformed. The prize does the work the crossing would have done, so the crossing is not made. This is the theft gilding performs: it supplies the look of what only the fire forges, the look is accepted in place of the forging, and the base metal stays base under a surface that reads precious.

THE SECOND BORROW

The finite center generates nothing.

It draws and does not radiate, and everything it appears to have is supplied from outside [see THE FINITE CENTER].

Naming gives it a name it did not earn.

Ownership gives it a deed.

Warming gives it a heat it cannot make.

Gilding gives it worth — the credential of service, the reputation for care, the honor, the rating, each a leaf of worth hammered thin and laid over a pull that produced none of it.

Ownership has its own entry; gilding is its sibling in the same list, and it does its own work [see OWNERSHIP]. Ownership converts the finite center into the postable and calls the deed possession. 

Gilding leaves the metal where it is and lays the appearance of value over the top. Ownership claims. Gilding decorates the claim so it reads as merited.

LEAF OVER LEAD

Gold leaf is hammered to a few atoms' thickness and pressed onto a base that remains base. Nothing under the leaf is changed. This is the whole of the operation and the whole of the deception: the surface is genuine gold, the object is genuine lead, and the eye reads the object by its surface.

The forge changes the metal. The fire of the Third Principle tempers the seven qualities into the Temperatur, and what comes out has been transformed through, not coated over [see THE TEMPERATUR]. 

Gilding is the anti-forge. It produces the reading the fire would have produced — worth, weight, the look of the tempered thing — without the fire. And because the reading is produced, the fire is not entered. Why forge, when the leaf already reads as gold. The gild is not a lie told about the forging; it is the substitute that makes the forging unnecessary, and the substitution is the loss. WHAT THE APPARATUS CONFERS

Gilding is applied by an apparatus built to confer it.

The prize committee. The certification body. The rating agency. The reputation firm hired to launder the reputation. The honorary degree, the most-admired ranking, the impact rating, the seal, the pledge signed at the summit.

Each confers the look of worth on a pull that generated none, and each is legible by design — the gild is made to be read, to post, to be admitted to the books.

Here the counterfeit and the real trade places at the ledger. The forge's product cannot be credentialed. Genuine care radiates unreceivably from inside the wheel; the Temperatur has no rating; Sophia cannot be a line item [see SOPHIA]. The gild is built to be posted — it has a grantor, a citation, a logo, a tier. So the ledger admits the leaf and cannot admit the metal the fire makes. The measurement high lands when the gild lands: the award announced, the rank risen, the seal awarded — the somatic reward the four axes deliver when the counterfeit reads true [see THE MEASUREMENT HIGH].

THE GENUS AND ITS SPECIES

Three operations already named are species of this one. The receipt is gilding earned — the credential produced by genuine delivery, the legitimacy that blinds because it is real [see THE RECEIPT]. The signature is gilding proceduralized — the smooth trace that credentials the absence of religion, the perfume on the dead skin [see PROCESS SAYS]. Sincerity-as-vestment is gilding sincere — the reformer's own regenerative vocabulary worn in good faith, the most legitimate gild because he means it [see SINCERITY].

What none of the three holds is the gild with nothing under it. The purchased rating. The naming-rights wing. The prize awarded to the extractor. The reputation laundered by a firm whose only product is the laundering. No delivery, no procedure, no sincerity — leaf over lead with nothing but lead beneath. This is gilding as such: the applied surface of worth, indifferent to whether anything under it was ever forged. The three species are the cases where something real is present. The genus holds the cases where nothing is.

GILDING THE TRESPASS

The apparatus does not only gild creatures. It gilds the occupation. Conquest is gilded as civilization. Extraction is gilded as development. The occupation is gilded as order. The adoptio's "for their own good" is the trespass gilded as gift [see THE ADOPTIO]. The self-made man's reputation is the gild over the forced holding that made him [see THE SELF-MADE MAN]. Philanthropy's halo is the warming borrow; the reputation for care laid over it is the gilding borrow, and the two run together at that face [see PHILANTHRO-SOVEREIGNTY].

In every case the base metal is unchanged, and the gild is the reason it need not change. The occupation that reads as order is not asked to cease. The extractor who reads as benefactor is not asked to stop. Gilding buys the pull out of the fire.
