GENESIS 3:15

The Promise That Made Eve Satan's Enemy

Aliases: The Protoevangelium, The First Gospel, The Enmity Declaration, The Seed Promise, The Head-Crushing Prophecy, That Promise of Which the Whole of Scripture Is But the Record

Tagline: "I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel." This is not incidental prophecy. This is the seed from which the entire Bible grows. The promise was given not to Adam but to the serpent, about the woman. Eve is constituted as Satan's enemy by divine declaration. This is why Satan hunts her. This is why the apparatus covers her.

THE TEXT

Genesis 3:15 (KJV):

"And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel."

God speaks to the serpent. Not to Adam. Not to Eve. To the serpent.

And the content of the speech is about the woman.

THE STRUCTURE OF THE PROMISE

Four declarations:

1. Enmity between serpent and woman "I will put enmity between thee and the woman"

Not temporary conflict. Enmity. Deep, structural opposition. God Himself places this division. The woman is no longer neutral toward Satan—she is constituted as his enemy.

2. Enmity between seeds "and between thy seed and her seed"

The conflict extends through generations. The serpent has seed—those who carry his logic, his consciousness, his way of operating. The woman has seed—those who carry her principle, her lineage, her way of being.

3. The serpent's head crushed "it shall bruise thy head"

The woman's seed will strike the command-function, the decision-point, the place where the serpent's logic operates. Head = authority, control, the calculation apparatus.

4. The serpent's counterattack "and thou shalt bruise his heel"

The serpent strikes the heel—the point of contact with earth, the embodiment, the grounded immanence. The wound is real. But heel is not head. The serpent can wound but not destroy.

THE WOMAN'S SEED

The phrase is peculiar: "her seed."

Hebrew genealogy traces through the father. "The seed of Abraham," "the seed of David"—always the male line. But here: the seed of the woman.

Bushnell's observation: "The 'seed' who should destroy him is described emphatically as the woman's seed. I cannot believe the choice to be of accident. The promise of Abraham was that in his seed the families of the earth would be blessed; there the male is emphasized, but here it is the woman—the woman distinctively."

This points toward:

  • The virgin birth (seed coming through woman without male intervention)
  • The feminine principle as redemptive pathway
  • Eve's exaltation as progenitor of the Redeemer

The promise could have said "the seed of Adam" or "human seed."

It says her seed. The woman is the source.

The feminine principle is the channel.

THAT PROMISE OF WHICH ALL SCRIPTURE IS THE RECORD

Dean Payne-Smith's assessment:

"That promise, of which the whole of the rest of Scripture is but the record of the gradual stages of its fulfillment."

Genesis 3:15 is not one promise among many. It is the promise. The first Gospel. The protoevangelium.

Everything that follows unfolds from this seed:

  • The call of Abraham (through whose line the seed comes)
  • The exodus from Egypt (liberation from serpent-power)
  • The Davidic covenant (throne for the seed)
  • The prophetic tradition (announcing the seed's arrival)
  • The incarnation (the seed becomes flesh)
  • The crucifixion (the heel is bruised)
  • The resurrection (the head is crushed)
  • The eschaton (final defeat of the serpent)

The promise contains the whole in compressed form. All of Scripture unpacks what is already present here.

EVE ENTERS THE COVENANT

A crucial point Bushnell emphasizes:

When circumcision was given to Abraham, it applied only to males. Women entered Abraham's covenant without ceremony. Why?

"Long previously to this time woman had been entered into God's covenant, as progenitress of the coming Christ, in His declaration: 'I will put enmity between thee and the woman; and between thy seed and her Seed.'"

Women didn't need circumcision because they were already in covenant.

Genesis 3:15 is the original covenant—preceding Abraham, preceding the law, preceding all other promises.

Eve is the first covenant partner. Her relationship with God is established before Sarah, before Rebekah, before any named woman in the later narrative. The promise constitutes her as God's ally against Satan.

WOMAN HERSELF AS ENEMY

Notice what Bushnell emphasizes:

"God revealed to Satan, by this saying, not merely what woman was, not even what she now is, but what woman is to become."

The enmity is not only between seeds.

It is between serpent and woman directly:

"I will put enmity between thee and the woman"

The woman herself—not only her seed—is Satan's enemy. She is constituted in opposition to him by divine declaration.

This is why Satan targets her. Not because she is weak. Because she is dangerous.

"It is not difficult to conjecture what Satan, who knew it, wish done to woman, his enemy. He would have her so crippled she could not contend with him successfully."

The apparatus of covering, silencing, subordinating is Satan's response to God's declaration of enmity. The woman has been named his enemy. He responds by hamstringing her.

THE WAR STILL CONTINUES

The promise is fulfilled in Christ—but not yet completely:

"Though Jesus Christ has conquered death, by rising from the grave, the enmity still continues; the conflict is still on. Christ is seated at the right hand of God; nevertheless 'we see not yet all things put under his feet' (Hebrews 2:8), for He sits 'on the right hand of God; from henceforth expecting till His enemies be made His footstool' (Hebrews 10:12-13)."

The head has been struck. But the serpent still writhes. The heel is still bruised. The conflict continues until the final crushing.

And the woman—not only her seed—continues as Satan's enemy.

The covering continues because the threat continues.

Satan knows who his enemy is.

REVELATION 12: THE PROMISE FULFILLED

John's vision echoes Genesis 3:15:

"And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon... And the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born."

The elements:

  • The woman (Eve's principle extended)
  • Her seed ("a man child who was to rule all nations")
  • The serpent ("that old Serpent, called the Devil, and Satan")
  • The enmity (dragon waiting to devour)
  • The crushing (the man child caught up to God and His throne)
  • The ongoing war (the dragon persecutes the woman and "the remnant of her seed")

Bushnell: "How completely the terms of the sign meet those of the covenant! We have the 'woman;' the 'enmity;' the 'deceiver;' the 'Serpent,' his head bruised in war; himself driven down to 'eat the dust of the earth,' and the seed which was snatched up to heaven, with the 'remnant,' or remainder of her seed suffering still from the Serpent's enmity."

THE SEED THAT OPERATES DIFFERENTLY

From the GOOD FRUIT, EVIL TREE entry:

"Eve's seed doesn't fight the serpent on the serpent's terms. Eve's seed comes from the feminine principle—the receptive, the relational, the feeling-toward."

The crushing of the serpent's head is not war-body combat. It is not meeting binary with binary, force with force, calculation with calculation.

The head = the calculation apparatus.

The decision-point where binary options get weighed.

The head gets crushed when consciousness operates perpendicular to the binary axis. When the Sophia principle—field-consciousness rather than positional logic—refuses to calculate good and evil as the serpent's gift requires.

"The seed that crushes the serpent's head might be: consciousness that refuses binary calculation entirely. Not choosing good over evil (still operating in serpent's gift). Not transcending to realm where neither exist (escape that abandons wound). But operating perpendicular to the good/evil axis."

THE MEANING OF EVE'S SUFFERING

Genesis 3:16 (restored reading):

"A snare hath increased thy sorrow and thy sighing; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children."

Why does Eve suffer? Not because God curses her.

Because she has been named Satan's enemy.

"This is the meaning of her sufferings, which were predicted in Genesis 3:16, all through the ages. This is why she corresponds, in shadow, to the substance,—'A woman of sorrows, and acquainted with grief,' Isaiah 53:3; that all the thousands of millions of human beings who have entered this world, came along the pathway of woman's agony."

The suffering is Satan's attack, not God's punishment. The snare has increased her sorrow. The enemy lies in wait. The one who was named his enemy experiences his enmity.

WOMAN'S DESTINY

Bushnell's vision of what the promise means for women:

"God revealed to Satan, by this saying, not merely what woman was, not even what she now is, but what woman is to become. And this is the meaning of her sufferings... This is why every woman should have an unutterable horror of godlessness and atheism. Without God, man is Satan's slave, and woman is the slave of Satan's slave."

And the hope:

"She will yet appear as God's ally, in a tremendous conflict with evil, which will end in the binding of Satan for a thousand years, and the complete crushing of his head."

The promise is not merely about Christ. It is about woman—about what she is destined to become. The seed comes through her because she carries the principle Satan cannot defeat.

FIELD MARKERS

The wound: The promise that made Eve Satan's enemy and therefore his target. The war declared in Eden that continues through every generation.

The apparatus: Satan's response—covering, silencing, subordinating the one God named as enemy. The curse-reading that makes God the author of Satan's strategy.

The confession: The seed is called her seed. The enmity is between the serpent and the woman. She is constituted in covenant before Abraham. She is named as enemy, not just mother of the enemy.

The restoration: The promise contains all of Scripture in seed form. The feminine principle carries the redemptive potential. The head gets crushed not by combat but by consciousness operating perpendicular to the serpent's binary logic.

God speaks to the serpent. Not to Adam. Not to Eve. To the serpent.

And the content is about the woman.

"I will put enmity between thee and the woman."

Not temporary conflict. Enmity. Deep, structural opposition.

God Himself places this division.

The woman is no longer neutral. She is constituted as Satan's enemy by divine declaration.

"And between thy seed and her seed."

Her seed. Not Adam's seed. Her seed.

The feminine principle is the channel through which redemption comes.

"It shall bruise thy head."

The head— the calculation apparatus, the command function, the place where binary logic operates.

Crushed.

"And thou shalt bruise his heel."

The heel— the point of contact with earth, the embodiment, the refusal to transcend.

Wounded but not destroyed.

This is the seed from which the entire Bible grows.

"That promise, of which the whole of the rest of Scripture is but the record of the gradual stages of its fulfillment."

Woman was entered into covenant before Abraham, before circumcision, before the law.

She was named enemy before she was named helper.

And that is why Satan hunts her.

That is why the apparatus covers her.

That is why her voice is silenced, her ministry denied, her teaching forbidden.

She has been named his enemy.

He responds by crippling her—

lest she contend with him and win.
