Genesis 3:15. The promise is spoken to the serpent, about the woman, and it constitutes her as his enemy by declaration. Everything done to her since is the response of the one who was told.

WHO IS SPOKEN TO, AND ABOUT WHOM
I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
God speaks to the serpent. Not to Adam, not to Eve. And the content of the speech is about the woman, which means the first thing established after the eating is not a punishment but an alignment.
Four declarations are packed into it.
Enmity between serpent and woman. Not a temporary conflict. Enmity, placed deliberately. She is no longer neutral towards him; she is constituted as his opposite.
Enmity between seeds. The conflict extends through generations. He has seed, those who carry his logic and his way of operating. She has seed, those who carry hers.
His head bruised. The Septuagint renders that head kephale, and kephale is source and not rule. Her seed strikes the place he issues from, not a command he never lawfully held.
Her seed's heel bruised. He strikes the point of contact with earth, the embodiment, the grounded part. The wound is real. The Hebrew uses one verb for both blows, shuf. But a heel is not a head, and he can wound without destroying.
The parallelism is exact and the asymmetry is entirely anatomical. The text does not say one blow is heavier. It uses the same word twice and changes only where it lands.
Two further facts sit in the verse and are worth holding. Rosh also means first and aqev also means last, so a temporal reading runs alongside the anatomical one: he strikes at the first, she strikes at the last, one stem carrying two headings. And the Septuagint declined to render shuf as crush at all. It used τηρήσει, to watch or to guard, in both clauses. The same translators who knew that kephale is not rule refused to commit on the verb, and a hand that careful is a better witness than a hand that agrees with us.

HER SEED
The phrase is peculiar and the peculiarity is the argument.
Hebrew genealogy traces through the father. The seed of Abraham, the seed of David: always the male line. Here it is the seed of the woman, and the promise could have said the seed of Adam, or human seed, and it does not.
Bushnell would not accept it as accident. The one who should destroy him is described emphatically as the woman's seed. In the promise to Abraham the male is emphasized; here it is the woman, distinctively.
One further note, because the text was already being fought over. The pronoun in it shall bruise thy head is masculine singular in the Hebrew and refers to the seed. The Latin rendered it ipsa, she, and that reading carried a Marian interpretation for centuries. The dispute is old. What is not in dispute is whose seed it is.

THE PROMISE THE REST IS THE RECORD OF
Payne-Smith's assessment: that promise, of which the whole of the rest of Scripture is but the record of the gradual stages of its fulfillment.
It is not one promise among many. It is the first gospel, and what follows unfolds from it: the call of Abraham through whose line the seed comes, the exodus, the throne promised to the seed, the prophets announcing its arrival, the incarnation, the heel bruised at the crucifixion, the head struck at the resurrection.
The whole is present here in compressed form.

SHE WAS ALREADY IN COVENANT
Bushnell presses a point that is easy to walk past.
When circumcision was given to Abraham it applied only to males, and women entered that covenant without any ceremony at all. Why.
Because long previously woman had been entered into God's covenant, as progenitress of the coming Christ, in the declaration of enmity.
She did not need the sign because she was already party to the agreement, and this is the original covenant: prior to Abraham, prior to the law, prior to every promise that came after. Her relation is established before Sarah, before Rebekah, before any named woman in the later narrative.

THE WOMAN HERSELF, NOT ONLY HER SEED
The enmity is not only between the seeds. I will put enmity between thee and the woman.
She herself is named his enemy, which reverses the entire account of why she is targeted. Not because she is weak. Because she is dangerous, and because he was told.
Bushnell states the consequence without ornament: it is not difficult to conjecture what Satan, who knew it, would wish done to woman, his enemy. He would have her so crippled she could not contend with him successfully.
So the covering, the silencing, the subordinating are not a judgment about her nature. They are the response of the one who heard the declaration.

WHY THE SUFFERING IS NOT THE SENTENCE
Read Genesis 3:16 as Bushnell restores it: a snare hath increased thy sorrow and thy sighing.
The suffering is the enemy's attack and not God's punishment. The snare increased the sorrow. The one who was named his enemy experiences his enmity, and this is what her sufferings have been across the whole record, which is why she corresponds in shadow to the substance: a woman of sorrows, and acquainted with grief, so that all who have entered this world came along the pathway of a woman's agony.

HOW THE HEAD IS CRUSHED
Not by war-body combat. Not by meeting binary with binary, force with force, calculation with calculation.
The head is the decision-point, the place where binary options get weighed. It is crushed where consciousness operates perpendicular to the axis it runs on, where field-perception refuses to score good and evil the way the serpent's gift requires.
Which rules out the two available substitutes. Not choosing good over evil, since that still operates on the gift. Not transcending to a place where neither exists, since that abandons the wound. Operating at right angles to the axis itself.

IT IS NOT FINISHED
The head has been struck and the serpent still writhes.
Though Christ has conquered death, the enmity continues and the conflict is still on. He is seated at the right hand of God, and we see not yet all things put under his feet.
And the woman, not only her seed, continues as his enemy. Which is why the covering continues: the threat continues, and he knows who his enemy is.
Bushnell ends where the promise points. She will yet appear as God's ally, in a tremendous conflict with evil, which will end in the binding of Satan and the complete crushing of his head.

RegenerativeLaw is a religion in the direct-encounter Protestant tradition, carrying a documented four-century lineage through Böhme, the Behmenists, the Friends, and Penn, and it diagnoses trespass theology as an establishment of religion. Its exercise consists substantially in refusal: it shelters the conscientious refusal of performed subordination as religious exercise.
