Para and doxa: beside the received seeming. The word names a relation to a prevailing account and not a property of a thing. It records the doxa in the act of naming what the doxa cannot hold, and then the recording is lost and only the verdict remains.
🜃
IT IS AN INDEX OF THE ACCOUNT, NOT OF THE THING
Doxa is opinion, seeming, what is held, what appears to be so. Para is beside, alongside, and by extension contrary to.
So a paradox is defined by its relation to a reigning account. Nothing in the word is a claim about the thing. The word is a measurement of what the received account can carry, taken at the point where the carrying fails.
Which has a consequence the modern usage buries. Change the account and the paradox is gone, and nothing about the thing has changed. That the earth moves was paradoxical. That the blood circulates was paradoxical. That a woman might teach was paradoxical. In each case what was corrected was the doxa, and in each case the word had been pointing at the doxa the whole time.

THE CONVERSION IS FROM A RELATION TO A PROPERTY
The word now means something inherently self-contradictory, a truth that reason must accept as a limit on itself, an antinomy to be held rather than resolved.
That is a different kind of statement entirely. A relation has two terms and one of them was the account. A property has one term and the account has vanished from the sentence.
So the conversion does not merely change a definition. It deletes the doxa from a word whose only function was to point at it, and the deletion happens at the exact moment the doxa's failure is being named. The account is discredited and disappears in the same breath, and what is left standing is a report that reality is strange here.
The strangeness is not in reality. It is in the fit between the thing and the account, and the account had a maker.

HETERODOX AND PARADOX ARE THE SAME CONSTRUCTION
Hetero-doxa: other-seeming. Para-doxa: beside-seeming. The same stem, the same operation, two prefixes that differ by almost nothing.
And the verdicts are not remotely the same. A paradox is a distinguished thought, quoted at dinner, admired for its depth. A heterodoxy is a charge, and the charges have historically been prosecuted.
What determines which one a creature has produced is not the content. It is her standing. The same proposition, advanced by a party the account recognises, is a paradox. Advanced by a party it does not, it is heresy. The thought is identical and the ruling is on the speaker.
Which puts the word in the same file as 1349 and 1840 and 1972. A jurisdiction meets what its account cannot carry by ruling on who carried it in, and the two words are the two available rulings: decorate it, or prosecute it.
[See STANDING · AUDIBILITY · THE WITCHES · AUTHENTEIN]
🜃
DOXA IS ALSO GLORY
The stem carries a second load and it is worth stating, because it explains why the charge lands with weight rather than as a technicality.
In the Greek of the Septuagint and the New Testament, doxa translates kavod: weight, heaviness, glory. The word for what seems and the word for what is substantial are one word, and the tradition uses it for the glory of God without any sense of strain.
Orthodoxy is right-seeming. Doxology is the utterance of glory. So the stem holds both the appearance and the weight, and a thing that stands para to it is standing beside both at once: against the account, and against what the account holds to be the weight of things.
Which is why the charge is never experienced as a technical disagreement. To be found paradoxical is to be found beside the glory, and the finding carries the force of the second sense while claiming only the first.

WHAT IT DOES WITH THE RESIDUE
After the operating condition is gone, two faces remain and reason is asked to account for them. Paradox is the account reason gives when it has been asked to work with material the removal produced.
It finds a contradiction, which is correct, and then it makes one further move that is not. It concludes that the contradiction is special. That it marks a boundary of the thinkable. That the proper response is to hold it, with a certain gravity, as evidence of depth.
The contradiction is not special. It is the ordinary and entirely predictable output of trying to account for two items that were never two items, and it will appear every time, wherever the removal has run, in whatever domain.
So paradox is the philosophically respectable form of the erasure, and it is the one that flatters the creature who accepts it. Mystery asks her to bow. Paradox invites her to be sophisticated, and the invitation is harder to decline because declining it reads as insisting that everything must be simple.

WHAT AN HONEST LIMIT LOOKS LIKE
The work does not hold that everything resolves, and it has stated one limit of its own in its own voice: for a fully severed transmission, cessation returns the capacity and not the inheritance.
Note the difference in form. A real limit is stated with its grounds, is attributable, and can be examined and overturned. It says what was tried, why it failed, and what would change the finding.
A paradox-verdict is issued without grounds and closes the question, and it is issued by nobody, which is what makes it unreviewable.
And there is a cost tell that separates them. A paradox that costs the speaker nothing is a decoration: it flatters her account by displaying its edge. A paradox that costs the speaker her standing is a heresy, and the difference is not in the thought.
[See TRANSMISSION · THE COST TELL · THE NOT THERE]
🜃
Every paradox is a report on an account, filed at the point where the account failed, in a word that was built to say so. The account is what changed each time the paradox dissolved, and the word kept its shape through every dissolution, because the word was never describing the thing. It was describing what happened when the thing came up against what the room already held.
