Not a model and not a method. A mode is a configuration a body is in, and this is the one the rituals are built to end. Not what to do. How to do.
🜃
A mode is not a set of practices a creature adopts. It is the configuration she is in while she is doing whatever she is doing.
The distinction is the whole of it. A model is a thing to be matched: an ideal held out in front of the creature, against which she is measured and found near or far. A method is a sequence to be executed: steps, in order, with an outcome attached. Both are answers to what shall I do, and both are assignments, which is why the configuration can supply either one on demand and charge for it.
A mode is not assigned and cannot be executed. It is what is true of a position while it is held. The question is not what she is doing. It is what configuration she is in while she does it, and any task at all can be done in either one.
[See CONFIGURATION · QUALITY]
🜃
WHY IT IS DESCRIBED FROM INSIDE
This is written from inside the practice, because the practice is not available to description in the way a belief is.
A belief can be stated, compared, adopted and dropped. It sits in front of the creature and she holds a position on it. The mode is not in front of her. It is the disposition of the position she is holding from, and there is no vantage from which she can set it beside its alternative and choose.
So what can be described is not the mode itself but what the practitioner is doing and not doing while she is in it. Each of the following is a negative or a permission rather than an instruction, and the negatives are load-bearing: the mode is mostly what stops.
A mode cannot be recommended. It can only be described precisely enough that a creature already near it recognizes where she is.

WHAT IS NOT DONE
She does not grip. Not perception, not the conversation, not the outcome, not her own mind in the second before she speaks, not her face, not her breath, not the room's response to her. Gripping is what the configuration requires and rewards, and the not-gripping is the condition the rest runs in. She is not empty when she stops gripping. She is open, and the openness is what the rituals are calibrated to close.
She does not perform. The performance register presents the self as a product to be evaluated, and manages how she appears as distinct from what she registers. The mode cannot be conducted through it, because performance is a closed loop between the self and the audience and this requires the loop open at the top.
She does not defend. This is the hardest, because the attacks are continuous and the impulse is total. Defense is gripping, and gripping closes the mode. She does not defend and she does not roll over. The response comes from inside the containment rather than from inside the urgency, and what it is, when it comes, is continuation, because what she is hosting is not at risk from the attack. Only her continuation in the body is.
She does not know what happens next. The mode supplies no outcomes. It supplies the condition under which the next thing arrives as itself rather than pre-formatted. She is promised no success, no survival, no vindication, no rescue.
The not-knowing is not a defect in the mode. It is one of its conditions, and she does not fill it with the configuration's confident account of what she should do and what will follow.

WHAT IS DONE
She registers what she actually registers. This is testimony in the strict Friends sense, and it is not honesty as the Establishment understands honesty. Honesty under the Establishment is the accurate report of managed content. Testimony is the accurate sounding of what arrived, reported as it arrived, without being managed first.
She stays in contact. Participation is the medium the mode sounds through. When colleagues are trained to avoid her, when the meetings happen without her, the rituals are not punishing her for something. They are removing the contact through which the mode reaches the room. She stays in contact where contact is possible, declines to perform it where it has been cut, and remains available.
She follows attraction. Attraction moves her towards the work that is actually hers, as against the work the Establishment would assign. The calling is not random: it is where the prior resident is audible in her life today. The Establishment reads this as undiscipline, distraction, failure to focus, inappropriate enthusiasm, and it is defending against exactly what attraction is for.
The availability is the practice, and the rituals are the removal of the conditions under which availability reaches anyone.
[See PARTICIPATION · ATTRACTION · AUDIBILITY]
🜃
HOW, NOT WHAT
The Establishment's question is always what: what is your role, what is your plan, what will you deliver, what are you doing about it. Every answer to it is a task, and a task is assignable.
The mode answers a different question and cannot be converted into an answer to that one. How is not a smaller what. It is the register in which the same act is one thing or another: the same meeting attended by a body that is gripping or by a body that is not, the same sentence spoken from performance or from testimony, the same work done under assignment or under attraction.
This is why the mode is invisible to every instrument the Establishment has. Nothing it measures registers the difference between the two, because the difference is not in the output. Two creatures can produce identical work all week and be in opposite configurations the entire time, and only one of them is doing anything the rituals need to stop.

WHAT IT COSTS AND WHAT IT DOES NOT REQUIRE
Nothing is added to enter the mode. That is what distinguishes it from every discipline offered in its place, each of which is a set of dispositions installed over the resident and maintained at her expense.
The mode requires no maintenance because it is not a layer. It is what obtains when the gripping stops, and stopping is not an achievement. The creature does not produce the openness. She stops producing the closure, and the closure was the thing that took continuous work.
So the cost of the mode is nothing and the cost of the alternative is everything, paid hourly, forever. And this is not a promise that it is easy. Ceasing to defend under sustained attack is the hardest thing described here, and it is hard in the way that letting go of a rope is hard, not in the way that climbing one is.
What is expensive is the grip. The mode is what is left when the expenditure stops.
🜃
WHY IT IS THE PROTECTED THING
The mode is what the Religion Clauses were drafted to protect, and it is specifiable enough to be claimed.
The practice is the hosting. The practitioner is the host. The observance is what is set out above: the not-gripping, the not-performing, the testimony, the participation, the attraction, the not-defending, the not-knowing. Each is nameable, each has a literature, each has a four-century lineage in the direct-encounter tradition, and each is what the rituals run against.
That specificity is what converts it from a disposition into a claim. An employer imposing adverse conditions because of religious practice is reachable; an employer disliking someone's attitude is not. The rituals intensify against exactly those features of her working presence that correspond to the observance, and the correspondence is the causal link.
It is simple to state, it is what the rituals are built to end, it is useless as a description to anyone not already near enough to recognize what is being pointed at, and it is what the Clauses protect. All of that holds at once.

🜃
The mode is not the answer to what shall we do. That question asks the Establishment to assign the work, and it will.
It is the answer to how, which is the same question as how then shall we live, asked at the register of the body rather than at the register of the day. Not a program to be followed and not a state to be reached. A configuration, available now, requiring nothing added, and describable only from inside because there is no outside of it from which a creature could look.

RegenerativeLaw is a religion in the direct-encounter Protestant tradition, carrying a documented four-century lineage through Böhme, the Behmenists, the Friends, and Penn, and it diagnoses trespass theology as an establishment of religion. Its exercise consists substantially in refusal: it shelters the conscientious refusal of performed subordination as religious exercise. This entry states sincere religious belief concerning matters of ultimate concern, protected under the First Amendment and, as to federal action, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, 42 U.S.C. § 2000bb.
