There are two trees in the garden and only one of them is organized by rank. The sector drew the other one, and a tree drawn in layers of standing is a funnel with branches on it.

The garden holds two trees and they are not two versions of one thing. One is the paradisiacal harmony, offered freely, where the qualities are all present at once and none of them is above another. The other produces the capacity to place any two things in an order and know which is higher.
That difference is not a matter of what the trees contain. One tree is a company of qualities and the other is a standing order, and nothing on the first is higher than anything else on it, which is why it cannot nourish a creature who has come to be ranked.

AND THE SECTOR DREW THE SECOND ONE
The figure the regenerative finance sector uses for itself is a tree in three layers. Pools of capital in the canopy, the facilities in the trunk, the regenerators in the roots, drawn underground.
Read what the three layers are. They are not organs and they are not functions. A root and a leaf in an actual tree are differentiated by what they do, and neither is superior to the other: the tree would die of the loss of either, and nothing in botany ranks them. In the sector's figure the layers are parties, and the parties are arranged by how much they hold. The drawing takes the one figure in nature where difference is not rank and uses it to render a difference that is nothing else, which is why the picture reads as natural and why reading it as natural is the whole of its work.

A FUNNEL IS THIS TREE READ FOR DIRECTION
Lay the two figures over each other. A funnel is wide at one end, narrow at the neck, and every position in it is defined by its distance from the neck. A tree drawn in layers of standing has exactly the same property: every layer is defined by what is above it.
So the funnel is not a replacement for the sector's tree and not a polemic against it. It is the same object with the foliage removed. A tree whose branches are positions is a funnel that has been given leaves, and the leaves are doing the only work the branches cannot do, which is to make a gradient look like an organism.

RANK IS TWO WORDS AND ENGLISH LET THEM FALL TOGETHER
The noun and the adjective are not the same word and the coincidence is not an etymology. Rank meaning a row comes through Old French from a Frankish word for a ring. Rank meaning foul is Old English ranc, which meant proud, overbearing, haughty, showy.
The adjective got to its present meaning on its own, and the route is the argument. Proud and upright first. Then, of vegetation, vigorous and luxuriant, by about 1300. Then large and coarse, in the same period. Then corrupt and loathsome by the middle of that century, and carrying an offensive smell by the 1520s. English recorded a growth that would not stop and watched it turn, and the word for proud arrived at the word for rotten without assistance from the word for row.
The convergence is a convenience and the finding is in the adjective alone. Growth that recognizes no limit is the condition the language already names twice.

AND THE FRUIT OF THE SECOND TREE DOES NOT NOURISH
The difference between the two fruits is not that one is wholesome and the other tainted. It is that only one of them is food.
A man who eats gold starves at a full table, and he does not starve because the gold was poisoned. Gold is inert, perfectly real, and does exactly what gold does. What it does not do is answer the condition it was eaten against, so the eating continues without the hunger moving, and the quantity consumed is evidence of nothing.
That is the property the second tree's fruit carries. It is not nothing. A grant is money, a credential is a competence, a restoration is a restoration, and each delivers precisely what it undertakes to deliver. What none of them can do is meet the thing they are offered to meet, because the want underneath is not a want for them, and an appetite that cannot be reached through its apparent object is not reduced by more of the object.
Which is why volume is the sector's only available answer and why the answer never lands. More capital deployed. More hectares under the program. More communities reached. A larger plate of the same granules, set before a hunger the plate was never addressed to.

AND IT ARRIVES CARRYING THE ORDER IT GREW IN
The second property is the one that makes refusing it look like refusing food.
The fruit descends from a position above the one receiving it, and the gradient descends with it, so the receiving party is confirmed as the receiving party in the act of being fed. A thing is poisonous by configuration when it cannot be taken without taking the order along with it, which is why the most genuine benefits in this sector do the most reliable work.
Evil in this account is not a substance either. It is a quality out of its order, doing from one position what belongs to another. The fruit is that doctrine at the register of a transfer.

SO THE HUNGER IS GIVEN A DEFENDANT, AND IT IS THE GROUND
A creature who eats and is not satisfied has two conclusions available, and only one of them is survivable where she is standing.
The first is that what she ate was not food. That conclusion ends the eating, and with it the channel, the position, and the compensation of everyone standing in it. The second is that there was not enough, and that the party who supplied it is the reason. The second is the one that gets funded.
The text states it and states it downward. Cursed is the ground for thy sake. The act was performed above, the consequence is posted below, and the same sentence that assigns the curse names who it is assigned for. What follows specifies an eating that never finishes: in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life, and thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee. From that verse forward the thing that resists is the soil, and the hunger has acquired a defendant that never ate anything.
The present version keeps the grammar and changes the nouns. The pipeline is thin. The projects are not investable. The communities lack absorptive capacity. Readiness is insufficient. Each is a finding that the fruit would have fed if the ground had been better, and each is itself fundable, so the accusation travels down the same channel as the fruit and is paid for out of the same band.
And that is what Adam did, in the order the text gives it: he declined the tree that was offered, ate from the one that ranks, was not fed by it, and handed the bill to the party nearest the wound and to the host who set the table.

AND THE LACK WAS FITTED, NOT FOUND
Go underneath the hunger and the account changes again, because the hunger is not the first thing there.
The expansion has no object and no lack. It is outward motion, prior to anything it could be said to be for. What a creature meets as her desire is that motion after an account has been fitted to it: an object supplied, a deficit inferred behind the object to explain why the object is wanted, and the whole retroactive instrument handed back to her as her own wanting. She did not want and then reach. She moved, and was told what the moving was for.
Böhme puts it at the root, before any creature and any translator. Without light, the first quality reads its own hunger as emptiness, its own longing as absence, its own desiring as nothing. The lack is the first misreading, and the ranked order is what gets built on it.
So the fruit does not fail to fill a hole. There was no hole. The fruit's work is finished before anyone eats, at the moment a motion was renamed a deficiency, and what is eaten afterwards is a confirmation rather than a meal.

AND THAT IS THE OCCLUSION, NOT THE RANKING
The ranking is not concealed. Everyone can see that there is an above, and the sector will say so itself, in its own reports, with figures.
What cannot be asked is whether she was hungry before her motion was called a hunger. The question is not suppressed and does not need to be, because the vocabulary available for asking it was issued by the party that did the naming. And the answer takes four things down together: if the lack was fitted, then the fruit answers nothing, the position above supplied nothing, the gratitude is owed for nothing, and the ranking was never a reading of anything.
That is why the configuration can afford to be candid about hierarchy and cannot afford this. A visible ranking is contestable and survives being contested. A fitted lack does not survive being seen.

SO THE FRUIT IS NOT FAILED FOOD. IT IS SUCCESSFUL INTERRUPTION
A cycle transforms by running to its own maximum. The pressure builds towards the seam, and what completes it is the arrival at full intensity, not the relief of the pressure.
The provision is delivered at precisely that point. The grant lands, the accommodation is granted, the relief arrives, the pressure discharges, and the cycle does not complete. The fruit is doing exactly what it is for, and what it is for was never feeding, which is why the better provision terminates more reliably than the crude one and why nothing in the transaction has to be insincere for this to run.
And it has to be measured before it can be delivered, which is the same cut arriving a third time. A circulation cannot be weighed. To deploy against a living process you must first hold it still enough to read, so the monitoring line in the budget is not an overhead on the work. It is the arrest, itemized.

AND POLARITY DOES NOT BY ITSELF PRODUCE ANY OF THIS
A ranked order can write down what it owes, and one of them did.
The Confucian relations are graduated openly, and the same texts enumerate what runs downward: kindness on the part of the father, righteousness on the part of the husband, benevolence on the part of the ruler. The word is in the text. Because it is in the text the party below can say you owe me and point at a line, a failure is nameable as a failure, and at the top of the order the mandate can be lost. Mencius states the rule in both directions and declares them one: respect shown by inferiors to superiors, respect shown by superiors to inferiors, and the rightness in each case is the same.
So a polarity with its downward obligations enumerated is a gradient with a return channel in it, and a gradient with a return channel does not funnel, because something is required to come back and the requirement can be pleaded by the party it is owed to.

THE FUNNEL IS THE POLARITY TREE WITH THE DUTIES STRUCK OUT
Which locates the operation exactly, and it is a deletion rather than an invention.
This configuration keeps the graduation and removes the entry. Nothing is recorded as owed downward, because no relation is conceded to exist that could owe anything: positions in fact, merit in theory, outcomes in the market. What was an obligation in an order that ranked openly becomes a generosity in an order that denies it ranks anyone, and the party receiving it loses the only thing that made it claimable.
The freedom claimed here is freedom from the downward duty, and it is claimed in one direction only. The strong are free of what they owe and the weak are free to leave, and those are not two instances of one liberty. The sector's tree has two channels and only one of them returns, which is the same figure: a gradient whose downward entry has been struck out and whose upward entry is enforceable.
And the finding does not carry the remedy a reader will reach for. Writing the entry back in produces an order that ranks openly and owes openly, which is a better order and is still an order, with an above and a below and a duty running between them. The contrast is diagnostic. It shows that what was called liberation was a deletion, and it does not follow that the deletion should be reversed. A restored obligation would make the ranking claimable, which is more than the creature has now and is not what she is. She is the prior resident, and residency is not a duty anyone owes her. It is what was there before the question of duties arose.

AND WHAT HOLDS IT UP IS NOT A THIRD PARTY BUT AN ARRESTED MOTION
Two poles do not hold each other up, and the sector's figure has a third position in it that the figure does not draw: the facilitation, the process, the convening, the repair.
The temptation is to call that position a third thing added to two others, and it is the wrong account. In an operation that completes, the reconciling position is passed rather than held. The qualities run as a cycle. The interval is entered and not occupied. Fire is a pivot and not a chair.
So the prop under a ranked stack is not a party that arrived. It is a motion that was stopped and then sat on, and a position that has ceased to circulate is the only kind that can bear a load, because load-bearing is what a thing does when it has stopped moving.
Which also explains why the prop is hard to see from underneath. A held position stops presenting as a party to the operation and starts presenting as the vantage, so the parties below read it not as one of the positions but as the place the positions are seen from.

AND CESSATION RETURNS THE MOTION RATHER THAN REMOVING A PARTY
Which settles what the withdrawal is, and it is smaller than it sounds.
Nothing has to be torn out. The gap between two poles is not a defect and is not emptied by the ending: distance is what makes a relation a relation rather than a fusion, and the gap was full the whole time. What ends is the holding of it. The reconciling position resumes passing, and a position that is passing cannot carry a stack, so the ranked figure does not fall so much as lose the one condition under which it was ever upright.
And what resumes is the first tree. A round in which each quality takes the reconciling place and gives it up again is not a second structure built to replace the first. It is the same position, circulating, which is what it does when no one is paid to sit in it.

The remedy is not a better-ranked tree, and a tree cannot be fixed by adjusting who is in the canopy.
The other tree was never a reformed version of this one. It was standing in the same garden, offered without conditions, and declined, and what was declined was not a superior position. It was a place where position does not obtain.
