THE FORGE / THE FORGERY
The word carries both operations and the doubling is not an accident of English. To forge is to temper what stays in the fire. To forge is also to counterfeit, and a counterfeit instrument was void from the moment it was signed.

To forge is to temper: the pressing that produces the note, the blade that holds an edge, the soul that persists.
To forge is also to counterfeit: the forged deed, the forged signature, the instrument that was void from the beginning. Void ab initio, which is not voidable and not defective and not in need of reform: it never conveyed anything, because the hand that signed it never held what it purported to convey.
The forge that tempers is at its own entry. This one takes the second sense, and the second sense is not a pun sitting beside the first. It is what the first produces a counterfeit of.

THE THREE FORGED DEEDS
The preventions are forgeries in the second sense, one at each expression position.
Possessiveness is love's forged deed. It purports to convey a claim on what love was radiating, and love does not convey claims.
Doctrine is voice's forged signature. It purports to convey settled meaning, signed on behalf of a voice that was communing rather than pronouncing.
Property is the body's forged title. It purports to convey a holding over what the body was participating in.
Each purports to convey what only the forge in the first sense produces, and each was void from the beginning, because the generating function never held the expression it purports to grant.

SEWN FROM THE FABRIC IT COUNTERFEITS
The nearest forgery is the costume made of the real thing's own material, which is why it passes.
The grip is made of real intensity. The doctrine is made of real conviction. The title is made of real law. Nothing in any of the three is fake at the level of substance, and a reader looking for falseness in the material will not find it, because there is none there to find.
What is forged is not the material. It is the conveyance, and a conveyance is not a substance that can be tested. It is a claim about who held what, and that claim is checkable only against the record of who did the holding.

MERIT IS THE FOURTH, AND IT IS THE ONE THE OTHERS ARE POSTED THROUGH
Merit is a credit posted for a quantity of burning. Where the holder did not do the burning, the credit is a receipt for someone else's fire.
That satisfies every element of the first paragraph of this entry. It purports to convey desert. It is signed by a hand that did not hold what it conveys, because the burning was done at another position. And it was void at the moment of posting rather than becoming void later through abuse.
Which makes merit the instrument the operation runs on, because the three positions it requires are held apart by a story about who earned what, and the story is an instrument in exactly this sense. The one who carries was made for carrying. The one who burned brought it on herself. Neither sentence is a description. Each is a conveyance, and neither hand held what it conveyed.

DE-AUTHORIZATION, NOT RENEGOTIATION
The response to a forged instrument is not renegotiation, because renegotiating concedes that something was conveyed and disputes only the terms.
The response is de-authorization: naming the instrument void from the beginning, and ceasing every performance that treats it as though it had conveyed. Not a better deed. Not a fairer title. Not a merit fairly measured, which is a fairer scale and a scale.
This is why the remedy at this register is not an answer to how a creature should live. De-authorizing an instrument is a refusal of a claim, and a refusal of a claim is not a position a creature has to occupy. The three arrests each take a different medicine and no single answer reaches all three. The forged instrument takes the same treatment wherever it is found, because what is wrong with it is not who is holding it.

WHAT THE FORGERY CANNOT COUNTERFEIT
One thing does not transfer, and it is the reason the second sense stays parasitic on the first.
The forge in the first sense leaves marks. The pressing shows. A voice that has been through it carries roughness and a body that has been through it carries scars, and those are the temporal evidence that something was actually pressed.
A stamped instrument carries no marks, because nothing was pressed to make it, and the stamp is offered in the marks' place. That is the whole of the counterfeit and it is detectable at one register only, which is where the stamped thing dissolves with the stamp and what was tempered holds.

The forge and the forgery share a fire and nothing else.
One tempers what stays in it. The other stamps what was never in it and sells the stamp as the scar.
