A need is not met. A need is manufactured, by destroying every other way of meeting it, and the destroyer is installed as the only remaining supply.

A created dependency is not a natural need met by an available supply. It is the removal of the other ways, performed first, so that the one remaining way can be presented as provision.
The sequence is fixed and it runs the same at every register. Make the existing means unavailable. Introduce a substitute that requires a continuing relation with the supplier. Let the substitute become load-bearing. Make removal cost more than continuation. Then collect what the dependence produces, hour after hour, and call the collection the price of the service.
The dependence is not a side effect of the operation. It is the product.

WHAT IS TAKEN IS NOT THE THING. IT IS THE OTHER ROUTES
A living way of meeting a need runs through many channels at once. Water from the well, the spring, the rain, the river. Knowing through practice, through the neighbor, through the hands of whoever did it before. Food from the ground under the feet, in the season it grows in.
What the operation does is not seize the water or the knowing or the food. It closes every channel but one, and then stands in the one that is left.
The well is condemned, the spring is fenced, the catchment is unpermitted, and the water arrives through the pipe that bills. The neighbor's knowing is inadmissible, the hands are unlicensed, and the knowing arrives through the credential that is sold. The ground is enclosed, the seed is patented, the season is irrelevant, and the food arrives through the chain that runs on petroleum.
Each substitution is offered as convenience and each is a narrowing. What was many ways of getting there becomes one way, and the one way has a gate on it, and the gate has an owner.

FIVE REGISTERS, ONE SEQUENCE
The body. Suppress the symptom and leave the condition producing it in place. Build a protocol of continuing management. Patent the compound. Tie access to employment and insurance. Then name discontinuation non-compliance, which files the failure to the patient rather than to what was built. The body arrives at a state in which it cannot function without mediation, and the state is entered as the body's own deficiency.
Money. Price shelter, care and learning above what wages reach. Offer credit as the answer to the shortfall you produced. Structure the repayment across decades. Tie housing, employment and health to the servicing of it. Then default is more devastating than continuation, which is not an accident of the terms. It is the term.
Knowing. Declare what the community holds invalid. Build institutional gatekeeping for what counts. Make the credential expensive and slow. Tie earning to holding it. Prosecute practice outside the regime. Epistemic authority moves out of the community and into the institution, one cohort at a time, and the move is called raising standards.
Connection. Give the service away until it is load-bearing. Absorb or starve the alternatives. Take attention and data as the actual payment. Make leaving cost the user her contacts, her record and her reach. The mediation of human contact becomes corporate, and the corporation is thanked for connecting people.
Survival. Enclose the commons, criminalize mutual aid, dissolve the households that held more than one generation. Position the state as the only legitimate provider of security, welfare and justice. Tie survival to documents. Make statelessness equivalent to social death. What remains is a creature who cannot live outside the mediation, and the mediation is called the social contract.

THE RATCHET
Created dependencies do not hold at a fixed depth. They tighten, and they tighten across generations rather than within a lifetime, which is why no one is present at the moment the grip closes.
The first generation knows how to grow food and does it sometimes and buys the rest. The second knows in theory and never practices. The third has no knowledge, no ground, no tools, no seed and no time. Nothing was taken from the third generation. Everything had already been taken before she arrived, and what she inherits is the taking's result presented as her nature.
Leaving now requires relearning what was lost, acquiring what is no longer available, and surviving the interval between the two. For most that is not a hard choice. It is not a choice.
Each cycle does four things. The unused capacity atrophies. The integration deepens. The exit cost rises. And the dependence is normalized, so that what was done stops being visible as something done.

THE SUBSTITUTE IS NOT THE THING
The substitution works because the substitute looks equivalent and is not.
Food is not purchased calories. One is a relation with a living system in a place, across a season, with hands in it. The other is a transaction. Shelter is not rented housing. One is the making of a place; the other is temporary permission to occupy one. Knowing is not a purchased credential. One is a capacity in a body; the other is a validation held by an institution that can withdraw it.
Once the substitution is complete the original need becomes unspeakable. A creature says she needs a job. What she needs is food. The job is the route to the food, and the route has been in place long enough that it has replaced the need it serves in her own account of herself.
That is the deepest part of the operation. Not that she is prevented from meeting the need, but that she can no longer state the need except in the vocabulary of the channel that meets it.

MOST INVISIBLE WHEN MOST COMPLETE
Before the capture, the alternatives are visible and the dependence is obviously constructed. During the capture, the loss is felt and it is fought. After the capture, the creature is born into it and the alternatives are not merely unavailable. They are unthinkable.
The commoners knew exactly what was being taken and resisted with their bodies. The wage workers still remembered something else and organized. Now the difficulty is not that meeting needs outside wage-mediated consumption is hard. It is that most people cannot picture it, and a thing that cannot be pictured cannot be missed.
This is not the success of an argument. Nothing persuaded anyone. The possibilities were removed from the space in which anything is perceived at all, which is a different operation and a more complete one.

THE PROBLEM IS THE PRODUCT
The operation does not only solve problems. It generates the problems whose solution requires more of it.
Destroy the households that held more than two generations, produce the isolated family, require mobility for employment, and loneliness appears at scale. The answers offered are therapeutic services, medication, and platform-mediated contact. What was communal is now professionally and technologically mediated, and the mediation is billed.
Run extraction until the water is poisoned and the climate is destabilized, and the crisis appears. The answers offered are green technology, carbon markets, expert management and international regulation. What was a stable living system is now administered, and the administration is funded.
Concentrate the wealth, price the needs above the wages, remove the security, and precarity appears. The answers offered are credit products, gig platforms and the side hustle. The condition is produced by the operation and then treated by the operation, and the treatment is entered on the same ledger as growth.
This requires no conspiracy and no coordination. An operation whose ordinary functioning produces the conditions that make it necessary does not need anyone to intend the result.

WHAT IT DOES TO THE CREATURE
There is a specific grief in recognizing that the need was made.
Not that she is weak for needing, and not that the need is unreal. The need is entirely real. It was engineered into her by the removal of everything else, and the removal happened before she was born, so there is no moment she can point to and no party she can face.
The layers go down. She needs the job. She was made to need it by decisions with dates on them. Her mother was made to need it and taught her to need it and believed it was how things are. And the alternatives were gone before any of them arrived, so the loss was never available to be grieved, which is the part that has no name.
Then there is the gratitude. She is required to be grateful for the job, which she needs because the commons were enclosed. Grateful for the medication, which she needs because the conditions producing the illness are maintained. Grateful for the credential, which she needs because what her people knew was declared invalid. She is required to thank the party that closed the other doors for the key to the one that is left. Withholding the thanks makes her ungrateful, entitled, unrealistic.
The bind holds because it has no exit. Stating the need makes her a supplicant. Stating the anger makes her ungrateful. There is no position from which the truth can be said without the saying being read as a fault in the speaker.

THE COMPLICITY
Once the dependence is deep enough, she has a stake in the continuation of what is destroying her.
Collapse would mean withdrawal and the return of what was suppressed. It would mean no income against the debt, the rent and the food. It would mean the credential is worth nothing in an economy that no longer exists. It would mean losing the platforms through which she is reachable at all.
So the arithmetic runs the wrong way and runs it honestly: being killed slowly is survivable, and the immediate absence is not. She defends what is harming her because she cannot survive its sudden removal.
She is not weak and she is not a coward. She is inside a constraint built to produce exactly this. But it is experienced as a moral failure, as a betrayal of what she believes, and the shame is the point. A creature who reads her own dependence as a personal defect cannot recognize it as a condition she shares, and what cannot be recognized as shared cannot be answered together.

WHY THE THREE ROUTES OUT ARE CLOSED
Individual exit. Past a certain depth, leaving is a threat to survival. The capacities are gone, the obligations are integrated, the switching costs are total, and the alternatives carry legal penalties: homelessness is criminalized, living off the grid is restricted. The barrier is higher than one creature can clear alone, and that is not her failure. It is the specification.
Gradual unwinding. The dependencies are load-bearing and they hold each other up. The debt requires the job which requires the credential which required the debt. And the creature inside them still has to eat during the transition. The old cannot be removed before the new exists, and the new cannot be built by someone wholly consumed by the old. The ratchet does not run backwards. That is what a ratchet is.
Reform. The instruments available for repair assume the dependencies. Law assumes the state. Finance assumes the debt. Medicine assumes the patient. Each remedy deepens the integration it was meant to relieve: subsidized housing leaves housing commodified and adds an administering party. Better wages make the debt more serviceable. Cheaper care makes the illness more affordably managed. Accessible education produces more credential-holders. Every one of them makes the dependence more bearable, and a dependence made more bearable is a dependence secured.

WHAT IS ACTUALLY REQUIRED
The operation is not managed better. The conditions it feeds on are ended.
That is cessation and not reform, and the difference is the whole entry. Reform works inside the space the dependencies define and can therefore produce only dependent outcomes, because the space is what was captured. What ends a created dependency is the restoration of the other routes: the commons that make the wage less necessary, the community care that makes the industrial route less necessary, the transmission that makes the credential less necessary.
Not a better gate. The other roads open again.
The creature is not asked to leave alone, and nothing here is a demand that she suffer the exit as proof of anything. The cost of the dependence is hers to weigh and never hers to owe. What this entry gives her is the name for what she is inside of: not a personal failure to have arranged her life better, but a manufactured necessity with dates on it, built by removing what she would otherwise have had.
