Not wisdom gained but dimension lost. The knowledge of good and evil is the installation of a measure, and a measure imposed on what is not measurable requires continuous force to hold.

WHY VANITY
Böhme's word carries four things at once, and all four are operating.
Emptiness, being void of the substance it appears to have. Illusion, seeming real while being projection. Futility, unable to accomplish what it promises. And pride, the self-inflation that produces the separation in the first place.
The knowledge is vain because it promises godlike discernment and delivers collapse. It appears to grant wisdom and installs blindness. It seems to offer choice and eliminates degrees of freedom. It presents as illumination and operates as a cut.
The vanity is the hollowness at the center of binary knowing: the void presenting as solid ground.

WHAT THE TREE OFFERED
Not moral wisdom. A measure.
Before it, qualities circulated without fixed valuation. Each thing participated without being categorized first. Orientation occurred without a judgment of the orientation. The fair image received without sorting the reception into acceptable and unacceptable.
After it, every quality must be scored as good or evil. Each thing is categorized before it can be encountered. Orientation is judged as right or wrong in the same motion as occurring. The receiving surface is interrupted by a sorting operation that runs before reception completes.

THREE OPERATIONS IN ONE
It separates. Good and evil is the original forced choice. Before it, orientation towards various dimensions did not require choosing between them. After it, every orientation arrives already judged: heavenly good and therefore acceptable, earthly evil and therefore forbidden, or the same pair inverted. It does not describe reality. It sorts reality into categories that can be administered, and what was continuous becomes discrete.
It measures. To know good and evil is to measure them, and measuring requires four things: a fixed scale with good at one end, an observer position to measure from, an object made into an object by being measured, and the exclusion of whatever does not fit the scale. What is excluded does not register as excluded. It registers as absent.
It requires force. This is the deepest of the three. Reality is not binary. It circulates, transforms, and holds both-and where the scale offers either-or. To impose a binary on what is not binary is not a single act but a continuous one: forcing the continuous into discrete categories, suppressing what fits neither, attacking what threatens the pair, and discharging onto a scapegoat whatever cannot be processed.
Which is why every moralism produces atrocity, and not because moralists are cruel. What they operate from can only hold its shape through force applied to what exceeds it.

THE OFFER READ GEOMETRICALLY
You shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
As gods is the observer position: the vanishing point measurement is performed from, the apex of the triangle, the model's seat.
Knowing is not participatory. It is the knowing that requires separation between knower and known.
Good and evil is the scale itself, the first measure, the thing that makes everything else measurable.
So what was offered was godlikeness-as-measurement: to stand apart, to measure, to judge, to sort. Not participation in circulation but occupation of the position circulation is observed from.
The promise was true and that is what made it catastrophic. They did become as gods in the sense of occupying the measuring position. And the measuring position is the vanishing point: the place from which everything is seen and nothing is participated in.
The gods described were already fallen ones. Gods of measurement rather than circulation. To become as those gods was to lose what made divinity divine, which is the participation that precedes position.

THE WAR BODY RUNS ON IT
The first lock runs on it. Contraction against motion becomes an opposition rather than a sequence: order is good and motion is threatening, or freedom is good and order is oppressive. Either way the pair forces opposition where circulation should occur.
The wheel needs it. The turning continues because the pair keeps generating contradiction. Good must defeat evil, evil resists, and neither can win because each defines the other. The wheel turns on the axis the measure installed.
Fire turns backward because of it. Fire should transform, taking what is and opening it towards what it could become. Fire operating through the pair becomes judgment-fire, burning what is scored evil and purifying towards what is scored good. The transformation becomes destruction and the pivot becomes a weapon.
And every head grows from it. State against market, order-good against freedom-good. Conservative against progressive, tradition-good against change-good. Sacred against secular, heaven-good against earth-good. The production never stops because the measuring never stops.

WHAT IT MUST SUPPRESS
The third. Good and evil are two. What reconciles, what is neither, what is both, has to be suppressed for the pair to hold. Whoever occupies the third position becomes the target, because what cannot be sorted cannot be tolerated. This is why mediators are killed, why bridges burn, and why anyone saying it is more complicated than that is attacked from both sides.
The remainder. The pair produces what fits neither category, and the remainder has to go somewhere. It goes onto one figure and is expelled, which temporarily stabilizes the pair: there is clear good and evil, and the evil has just been removed. But reality keeps exceeding the pair, so the remainder regenerates and another figure is required.
Rotation. This is the one the pair cannot survive. Anything that keeps turning refuses fixed position, and a measure requires fixed positions in order to read. So rotation must be arrested before it can be scored, which is what gimbal lock is: the axes forced into alignment, degrees of freedom eliminated, and what was turning made readable by being made stuck. Every attack on the perpendicular is the pair defending itself against what would dissolve it. The three suppressions are one suppression: what reconciles, what remains, and what turns are all the same refusal to hold a position on the scale.

WHAT PRECEDED IT
Not ignorance of difference. Participation in circulation.
Quality could be perceived without being judged. Orientation could occur without condemning what was not oriented towards. Impressions could be received without being sorted on arrival.
The prior condition was not naive, not unable to recognize harm, and not undeveloped. It was more than binary knowing rather than less: the dimensionality the binary had to eliminate in order to become possible.

WHAT LIBERATION IS NOT
Not choosing the right side. Not synthesizing the two into a higher unity. Not transcending them.
Each of those operates on the scale, and the scale is the wound.
Moral improvement is movement along the axis, which is why it cannot heal what the axis did. Becoming better is scored by the same measure that produced the injury, and a better score is not a recovered dimension.
What dissolves it is not an act of will against it. It is the recovery of what it collapsed: the turning that refuses to hold still long enough to be scored. The pair cannot maintain itself in the presence of genuine rotation, because it requires fixed positions and rotation will not fix.
