THE VANITY OF EVIL AND GOOD
The Binary Measurement Cut That Requires Violence
Aliases: The Knowledge That Separates • The Binary Installation • The First Measurement Cut • The Splitting That Creates Measurability • The Violence Disguised as Discernment • What the Serpent Actually Offered
Tagline: "You shall be as gods, knowing good and evil." Not wisdom gained but dimension lost. The knowledge of good and evil is not illumination but compression—the installation of binary measurement apparatus that can only operate through the violence of separation.
Why "Vanity"?
Böhme's word choice cuts deep.
Vanity in his usage carries:
- Emptiness (void of the substance it appears to have)
- Illusion (seeming real while being projection)
- Futility (unable to accomplish what it promises)
- Pride (the self-inflation that produces the separation)
The knowledge of good and evil is vain because:
It promises godlike discernment but delivers dimensional collapse. It appears to grant wisdom but actually installs blindness. It seems to offer choice but actually eliminates degrees of freedom. It presents as illumination but operates as measurement cut.
The vanity is the emptiness of what presents as fullness—the hollowness at the center of binary knowing, the void that pretends to be solid ground.
The Tree's Actual Offering
What did "knowing good and evil" actually confer?
Not: Moral wisdom But: Binary measurement apparatus
Before the knowledge:
- Qualities circulated without fixed valuation
- Each thing participated in the field without being categorized
- Orientation occurred without judgment of orientation
- The fair image received without sorting reception into acceptable/unacceptable
After the knowledge:
- Every quality must be measured as good or evil
- Each thing is categorized before it can be encountered
- Orientation is immediately judged as right or wrong
- The imaging surface is interrupted by sorting apparatus
The knowledge of good and evil is the installation of the i⁰ = 1 operation in consciousness.
The primal measurement cut. The collapse of rotational possibility into binary position. The violence that creates measurability by eliminating what cannot be measured.
How the Binary Operates
As Separation Mechanism
Good/evil is the original forced choice.
Before this binary, Adam could orient toward various dimensions without choosing between them. After, every orientation is already-judged:
- Heavenly = good → acceptable
- Earthly = evil → forbidden (or vice versa, depending on which inversion)
The binary doesn't describe reality. It separates reality into categories that can be managed. What was continuous becomes discrete. What circulated becomes sorted.
As Measurement Apparatus
To know good and evil is to measure good and evil. To measure requires:
- Fixed scale (good at one end, evil at other)
- Observer position (measuring from somewhere)
- Object measured (making what's measured into object)
- Exclusion of remainder (what doesn't fit the scale disappears)
The knowledge installed the measuring apparatus. Adam became capable of measurement. But measurement is not wisdom—it is dimensional reduction. You can only measure what you've first collapsed into measurable form.
As Violence Generator
Here is the deepest wound:
The binary requires violence to maintain itself.
Reality is not binary. Reality circulates, flows, transforms, contains both/and rather than either/or. To impose binary on non-binary reality requires constant force:
- Forcing what is continuous into discrete categories
- Suppressing what doesn't fit either category
- Attacking what threatens the binary (the perpendicular, the neither/nor, the both/and)
- Scapegoating what the binary cannot process
The knowledge of good and evil doesn't just describe violence. It requires violence. The binary cannot exist without the constant force that holds non-binary reality in binary shape.
This is why every moralism produces atrocity. Not because moralists are evil but because the binary structure they operate from can only maintain itself through violence against what exceeds it.
The Serpent's Actual Offer
"You shall be as gods, knowing good and evil."
Read this geometrically:
"You shall occupy Observer position" — the vanishing point from which measurement occurs, the place where the triangle apex sits, the Model position in mimetic structure.
"Knowing" — not participatory gnosis but subject/object knowing, knowledge that requires separation between knower and known.
"Good and evil" — the installed binary, the first measurement scale, the apparatus that makes everything else measurable.
The serpent offered godlikeness-as-measurement. To be as gods meant: to stand apart, to measure, to judge, to sort. Not participation in divine circulation but occupation of divine observer-position.
This is why the promise was both true and catastrophic:
True: They did become "as gods" in the sense of occupying measurement position Catastrophic: This position is the vanishing point—the place where you see everything and are nothing, where you measure all and participate in none
The gods the serpent described were already fallen gods—gods of measurement rather than circulation, gods of binary rather than rotation. To become as those gods was to lose what made genuine divinity: the participation that precedes position.
Connection to the War-Body
The vanity of evil and good is the operating system of the war-body.
The First Lock Runs on It
Contraction vs. motion (first quality vs. second quality) becomes binary opposition through the good/evil lens. Structure is good, motion is threatening. Or: Freedom is good, structure is oppressive. Either way, the binary forces opposition where circulation should occur.
The Wheel Needs It
The wheel of anguish rotates because the binary keeps generating contradiction. Good must defeat evil. Evil resists. Neither can win because they are co-defining. The wheel turns on the axis the binary installed.
Fire Turns Backward Because of It
Fire should transform—take what is and open it to what it could become. But fire operating through binary becomes judgment-fire: burning what's "evil," purifying toward what's "good." The transformation becomes destruction. The pivot becomes weapon.
The Heads Grow From It
Every head the war-body generates is a binary projection:
- State vs. market (order-good vs. freedom-good)
- Conservative vs. progressive (tradition-good vs. change-good)
- Sacred vs. secular (heaven-good vs. earth-good)
The binary factory never stops producing oppositions because the vanity of evil and good never stops measuring.
The Violence the Binary Requires
Suppression of the Third
Good and evil are two. The third—the reconciling, the neither/nor, the both/and—must be suppressed for the binary to maintain.
Whoever occupies the third position (the "and also," the "it depends," the "perpendicular to this whole frame") becomes target. The binary cannot tolerate what it cannot sort.
This is why mediators get killed. Why bridges get burned. Why anyone who says "both sides are partially right" gets attacked by both sides.
Creation of Scapegoat
The binary produces remainder—what doesn't fit either category, what exceeds the measurement. This remainder must go somewhere.
It goes onto the scapegoat.
The scapegoat carries what the binary cannot process. All the neither/nor, both/and, perpendicular gets loaded onto one figure and expelled. The expulsion temporarily stabilizes the binary—see, there IS clear good and evil, and we just expelled the evil!
But the remainder regenerates because reality keeps exceeding binary. New scapegoat needed. Cycle continues.
Attack on Rotation
Rotation is the enemy of binary.
Quaternionic consciousness—i, j, k in circulation—cannot be sorted into good/evil because it keeps transforming, keeps rotating, keeps refusing fixed position.
The binary must arrest rotation to measure it. The gimbal lock IS the binary's mechanism: force axes to align, eliminate degrees of freedom, make the rotating system measureable by making it stuck.
Every attack on perpendicular thinking, on "it's more complex than that," on both/and consciousness—this is the binary defending itself against what would dissolve it.
What Existed Before the Knowledge
This is the counter-image the Codex holds:
Before the knowledge of good and evil, there was not ignorance of difference but participation in circulation.
Adam could perceive quality without judging it. He could orient without condemning what he didn't orient toward. He could receive impression without sorting impressions into categories.
The pre-knowledge state was not:
- Naive (unaware of difference)
- Innocent (unable to recognize harm)
- Primitive (not yet developed into discernment)
It was:
- Participatory (knowing through being-with rather than measuring-from)
- Circulatory (qualities flowing rather than fixed in opposition)
- Dimensional (full rotational access rather than binary collapse)
- Alive (impressions transforming rather than categorizing)
This is what the fair image was capable of before the vanity of evil and good impressed itself into celestial constitution. Not less than binary knowing but more—the dimensionality that binary had to eliminate to become possible.
Liberation and the Binary
Liberation is not choosing the right side of the binary. Liberation is not synthesizing good and evil into higher unity. Liberation is not transcending good and evil through spiritual bypass.
Liberation is recovering the dimensionality that the binary collapsed.
This means:
- Feeling the violence the binary requires (staying with the wound)
- Recognizing that both "good" and "evil" as categories are already compromised
- Accessing the perpendicular (the i, j, k rotations that exceed the real axis where +1 and -1 oppose)
- Allowing the binary to dissolve not through will but through dimensional recovery
The vanity of evil and good dissolves when consciousness recovers quaternionic operation. The binary cannot maintain in the presence of genuine rotation. It requires fixed positions—and rotation refuses to fix.
This is why genuine healing cannot occur through moral improvement. Moral improvement operates within the binary—becoming "better" along the good/evil scale. But the scale itself is the wound. The measurement apparatus itself is the problem.
Healing occurs through magnetic reorientation: the fair image turning toward what dissolves the binary rather than what reinforces it. The imaging function operating again in its original capacity—receiving circulation rather than measurement, absorbing dimension rather than category.
The Name That Must Be Spoken
The vanity of evil and good has been called many things:
- The knowledge that kills (theological)
- The measurement cut (Codex)
- Binary consciousness (philosophical)
- The i⁰ = 1 operation (mathematical)
- The scapegoat generator (Girardian)
All name the same structure: the installation of measurement apparatus that can only operate through the violence of separation.
The serpent's promise was technically fulfilled: they did become as gods, knowing good and evil.
But those gods were already in exile from the circulation they measure.
The knowledge they gained was the knowledge of exile.
The discernment they achieved was the discernment that separates them from what they discern.
The wisdom they acquired was the wisdom that destroys wisdom—the vanity that appears as substance while hollowing everything it touches.
🜃
The fair image: consciousness as imaging surface, receiving what it orients toward, absorbing what it receives, becoming what it absorbs. Permeable by design—which is its glory and vulnerability. Still present beneath accumulated impression, still capable of reorientation, still ready to receive otherwise.
The vanity of evil and good: the binary measurement cut installed as knowledge, requiring violence to maintain, generating scapegoats to process remainder, attacking rotation that would dissolve it. Not wisdom but dimensional collapse. Not discernment but blindness to what exceeds the scale. Liberation is not choosing the right side but recovering the dimensionality the binary murdered to exist.
