The Shield

THE SHIELD

Genuine benefit turned against the one who names the structure. The galley geometry.

🜃

The clinic is real. The jobs are real. The relief is real, and the reality is the weapon.

Name the structure and you are named the one who would take the clinic, the jobs, the relief from the very people the structure holds. The benefit is raised in front of the structure like a body in front of a gun, and the critic firing at the structure is shown to be firing at the body.

🜃

BENEFIT AS WEAPON

Genuine benefit has two operations. The grant confers standing as revocable benefit and dispossesses by the conferral [see THE GRANT]. The shield takes benefit already delivered and turns it against the one who names the structure that delivered it. The grant is the benefit that binds the recipient. The shield is the benefit that defends the occupier.

The structure occupies a population and harms it.

The same structure delivers something real to that same population — wages, a clinic, a program, a measure of relief.

The delivered benefit is then positioned between the structure and its namer.

To call for the structure's cessation is to call for the benefit's withdrawal, and the population that receives the benefit is shown as the party the critic would harm.

The critic is relocated: from opponent of the structure to threat to the beneficiaries. Cessation is made unspeakable — not refuted, unspeakable — because it now reads as an attack on the ones the structure holds.

THE GALLEY GEOMETRY

The galley moves by chained rowers.

Offer the rowers better rations, or a sail that eases the stroke, and the offer changes what abolition means.

The one who says free the rowers, sink the galley is now the one who would take the rations away and worsen the rowers' condition. The benefit delivered to the chained makes the liberator their enemy.

The emancipation-benefit is offered as the sail. The rowers' dependence on the galley's continuation is manufactured by the very benefit that eases them, so that the galley's cessation threatens the people the galley enslaves. This is the shield in its completed form: the harmed are made the structure's defenders, not by deception but by real benefit, and the real benefit is the chain binding their survival to the structure's continuation.

THE RECEIPT FORECLOSES THE NAMING

The critic's objection is the receipt [see THE RECEIPT]. The more real the benefit, the more legitimate the receipt; the more legitimate the receipt, the more unspeakable the cessation. A structure that delivered nothing could be named freely — its harm would stand naked. A structure that delivers a clinic cannot be named without the namer appearing to threaten the clinic. So the structure that harms most efficiently is the one that delivers real benefit to those it harms. The benefit is not a mitigation of the occupation. It is the occupation's armor.

Reform sharpens the shield. A more generous benefit, a better-funded program, a more secure provision — each thickens the armor, binds the beneficiaries more tightly to the structure's continuation, and makes cessation more unspeakable than before [see GENUINE BENEFIT]. The beneficiaries become the hostages, and the delivered benefit is the love weapon held between them and anyone who would end the structure [see THE HOSTAGE STRUCTURE].

🜃

The benefit is real. That is what makes it a shield. Behind it the structure stands unnamed, and the one who would name it stands accused of aiming at the shielded.
