Romans 8:2 — the first law, named by its constitutive operation

THE WOUND
What most creatures experience as life is the first law running as their baseline. Not as interruption. As the ground.
The occupation is continuous. It does not lift long enough to be seen against anything. A trespass that never stops is not perceived as a trespass; it is perceived as the way things are. The creature does not meet the first law as an event that befell her. She meets it as the shape of the real — the given, the order of things, the weather she was born into. The maintenance is total, and the totality is the concealment. She is inside a continuously enforced deviation, and it presents to her as nature.

THE PAULINE NAMING
Paul's naming in Romans 8:2 is architecturally precise, not metaphorical.
The law of sin and death is the law whose operation IS the ongoing trespass — the generating function's continuous occupation of positions that belong to expression, held in place by continuous active force. Not a law that commands sin and produces death as its consequence. A law whose constitutive operation IS the trespass, and whose constitutive product IS the prevention of the second law running.
The law of the Spirit of Life is the second law: the transforming function operating without tollbooth, expression running in its own positions, the full cycle completing. The default. What obtains when the occupation ceases. What occurs when the generating function yields at Quality 4 rather than pushing through.

THE ASYMMETRY
The two laws are not symmetrical.
The second law is the default. The first law is the deviation. The default requires nothing to obtain; the deviation requires continuous active maintenance. The backwards firing does not happen automatically. The generating function must continuously refuse to yield. The occupation must be continuously held. The franchise must continuously feed back as the next cycle's generating ground.
This is why the first law is expensive. It costs the generating function everything it has — the whole of its capacity for generating spent on maintaining the occupation rather than serving the forge. The creature inside it experiences the expense as the effort of being alive. The exhaustion is not incidental to the first law. The exhaustion is the first law being paid for.

SIN
Sin, in this law, is not the moral category. Not the appetite indulged, the commandment broken, the stain on the record the morality play knows how to score. Sin is the law itself — hamartia, missing the mark — and the mark is the turning.
The generating function is oriented toward the radiance it receives through, the way a node conducts what the field sends. To turn is to take that orientation off the radiance and set it on a finite center — a thing that does not radiate and can only be gripped. The turning away from the source and the grip closing on the center are not two acts. They are one turning, seen from its two ends. This is the backwards firing at the cosmological register: the pivot faced the wrong way.
The law of sin and death sets the mark at the turned position. Health, under the law, is the orientation held away from the radiance, the grip closed, the finite center standing where the source was received through. The un-turning — the orientation returning to the radiance — is then scored as the deviation. From inside the law, every movement toward the source registers as sin. The creature is told she has missed the mark, when the mark was set at the turning; what the law scores as her failure is the one motion that would end the law.

DEATH
Death, in this law, is not biological cessation.
It is arrested circulation while process continues. The wheel spins. The qualities oscillate. Contraction, motion, anguish, all of it running at full output. There is motion — frantic motion — and no transformation. The pivot never opens on the transforming function's own terms. Fire never becomes light. The crossing occurs only under toll, returning what it produces to the occupation rather than completing the cycle.
Death is becoming impossible while process continues. Not stopped — prevented. The creature at maximum generative output, pressing against every threshold, arriving nowhere, because arrival was the one thing the occupation was maintained to prevent.
The wages of sin is death. Wages is an accounting word. Death is the operational output — what the configuration produces by running correctly, posted to the account as the return on the law's continuous operation. The law produces precisely what it names itself against.

THE LEDGER
The law of sin and death is the ledger in continuous operation.
Accounting theology names the mechanism at its most naked: entries made against the prior occupant, tick by tick, double-entry as the sacramental form of what may be admitted, the balanced page presented as the shape of the world. The occupation is not held by a single founding act. It is held by the books being kept — continuously, without a close — so that at every moment the account has already been posted against the creature before she arrives to answer it.
This is the expense named as bookkeeping. The first law costs everything because the ledger must never rest. A balance the occupation has not posted cannot be allowed to stand. The books are open before she is born and closed after she leaves, and what is entered on them is what the law has decided she is. The keeping is the trespass, running as arithmetic.

THE GRID
The first law does not only occupy. It installs a coordinate system.
Good and evil as separate positions. Sin and death as the two verdicts the coordinate system posts. The axis along which every creature, every act, every loss must be located and scored. Once the grid is the ground, the two laws appear as two positions on it — sin at one coordinate, life at another — and the creature is told her task is to cross from the one to the other.
The second law is not the opposite coordinate. It is not a position on the grid at all. The grid is the first law's own installation — the accounting of what counts, rendered as the shape of reality. To be located on it is already to be inside the occupation. Jurisdiction is the grid's claim to fix the creature at a position and post the account that position owes. The second law does not win a better coordinate. It is off the grid entirely — the residency that predates the axis and is not plotted by it.

THE CESSATION LEDGER
The cost of cessation is zero.
What stops is an active trespass. What stops is the continuous spending of the generating function's energy on preventing what the second law would produce if the prevention ceased. Nothing must be built, acquired, or paid. The one thing required is that the maintenance stop.
The zero is real, and it is not the only true reading of the cost. Not zero on the generating function's own ledger, where cessation registers as annihilation — the end of the only operation it recognizes as itself. Zero on the cessation ledger, where what stops is precisely the energy currently spent holding the occupation. Both simultaneously true. Neither collapsible into the other. The generating function reads its own annihilation where the cessation ledger reads the release of everything it was spending; the two are the same event met from the two configurations, and the law of sin and death is the configuration that can read only the first.
[See CESSATION · THE FORGE · THE MILD WILL]
🜃
The first law cannot be fought. Fighting it is the generating function turned against the generating function — another rotation of the wheel, another entry posted to the account. It can only be seen: a trespass held in place by continuous force, wearing the ground because it never lifts.
The books do not close. The account was opened against the creature before she arrived to answer it, and the keeping of it is the air she was born breathing. She was never shown the ledger, because being shown it would require a moment when it stopped, and the not-stopping is the law.
