All of them are the first three qualities with no fourth. What distinguishes them is which quality dominates, how the three combine, and their orientation towards the crossing itself.
The last of those is the axis that matters, and it is what divides the honest configurations from the performing ones.

THE HONEST BEASTS
These do not perform proximity to the pivot. They are what they are.
The Wolf. The first two qualities in direct operation: contraction driving expansion. The wolf does not pretend. It extracts.
And the second quality is the expansion itself, motion that has no object, desire that precedes what desire is for. The wolf is expansion that does not pretend to have a reason. It hunts not because it wants the prey; the want is prior to the prey. The prey is what the third quality would produce to explain the hunting, and the wolf has no third quality to produce explanations. The most honest configuration available: expansion operating without the rotation that would give it a story about itself.
The wolf is at the interval without claiming to be anywhere else.
The Lion. The third quality dominant. The wheel seized its own rotation and calls itself authority. Not extraction but command. The lion does not hunt; it occupies. Where the wolf expands without explanation, the lion is the explanation. The rotation has turned far enough to produce an account of why it deserves the territory it holds, and the account is the authority: the observer installed as sovereign, the vantage point claiming to be the throne.
The Dragon. The first and third combined in accumulation-defense. It has done what the others only begin: it has hoarded. Maximum contraction pulling everything inward, maximum fire burning everything that approaches. The terminal defensive form: occupying territory and spending all remaining energy defending the occupation against dissolution.
The Toad. The first two in collapse rather than drive. Where the wolf uses contraction and expansion as force, the toad has inverted contraction into bloat. Not dense. Swollen. The pulling-inward that has taken so much inside itself it can barely move. It does not extract or dominate. It sits. The generating function that has consumed its own expansion.
The Worm. The terminal state, and not a configuration any longer but a process. What remains when the capacity to forge has been entirely consumed by the occupation. It does not hoard or dominate or hunt. It moves through material and processes it. No creature remaining to orient towards the crossing. At dissolution, nothing persists.

THE PERFORMING BEASTS
These operate through concealment. They are not merely what they are. They present as something else.
The Serpent. The second quality dominant, inhabiting the between-spaces. Where the wolf moves to consume, the serpent moves to mediate. It occupies the gap, and it is the figure of the occupied third itself: the one that says you cannot reach source directly, I will carry you through.
Expansion installed at the crossing, routing her own expansion through itself. She expanded, with help, and her native capacity to expand without the intermediary stays latent.
The serpent does not appear as predator. The serpent appears as path.
The Fox. The second quality performing the fourth, and this is the distinction that matters.
Every other configuration is honest about being three qualities. The wolf knows what it is. The lion commands openly. The dragon defends visibly. Even the serpent, which conceals, is doing something real: occupying gaps.
The fox simulates proximity to the pivot without having it. It performs approach to the crossing while ensuring the crossing does not occur. The restless motion has been formatted by the rotation into an image of the crossing, and the fox produces that image for the expansion to attach to, so that the expansion appears to be the crossing itself.
This is the trespass's own self-image. The highest sophistication the generating function can produce without the yielding is the performance of yielding, and the measurement high lands hardest here: the creature who maps the crossing, studies the crossing, speaks the crossing's language, and thereby ensures the occupation continues wearing the crossing's costume.
Böhme's phrase: at best you appear as a subtle fox. The ceiling of available self-presentation without actual fire.
And the fox cannot see itself as fox. The wolf can see it is a wolf. The fox cannot, because the performance of crossing is the fox's self-perception. The fox that recognizes itself as fox has already begun to yield. The one that cannot is the most dangerous configuration, because it cannot be named from within itself.

THE AXIS THAT SORTS THEM
Wolf, lion, dragon and toad are not interested in the crossing, being fully occupied with acquisition, domination, defense and stasis. There is no thread remaining to pull towards the interval. They have become what they have accumulated.
The worm is beyond interest, with no creature remaining to orient.
The serpent is the mediation, and to cross would dissolve the position it occupies.
The fox has mistaken its performance of the fourth quality for the fourth quality, and believes it is approaching the threshold. That belief is the occupation's most complete form: the prevention convinced it is the way through.
Historical knowledge is fox-knowledge, which is Böhme's sharpest cut here: the creature who knows everything about the crossing, performs approach to it, and by performing it ensures the prevention continues.

And it is not a hierarchy of wickedness, because on the only axis that matters the fox is furthest from the crossing and closest to it in appearance, while the wolf, which pretends nothing, at least stands where it stands.
