Paul's two laws have a mathematical signature.
The law of sin and death is the deviation, and the deviation requires continuous active force. The Law of the Spirit of Life is the default, and the default is what obtains when the force stops.
At the mathematical register the deviation is e^(rt) and the default is e^(iθ). Same base. Two functions. The installation depends on the substitution being read as continuous when the operations are categorically distinct.

THE ROTATION
e^(iθ) operates rotation in the complex plane. Its magnitude is conserved: the modulus is 1 at every θ. It rotates without growing, and the rotation is its only operation. At θ equals 2π it has returned to where it began, having performed no additional work to close, because the closure is what the rotation is.
The function requires no external supply to run as it reports. The rotation continues across all θ without drawing anything from outside itself. The conservation is not a result the function achieves. It is the function's own form.
This is what unitary means at this register. The operation that does not lose, does not gain, does not require, does not deplete. The operation that is simply what it is, turning through itself, closing through itself, conserving through itself.

THE TWO LAWS
Romans 8 names two laws.
The law of sin and death is the law of trespass: the generating function's ongoing occupation of territory that belongs to expression, maintained by continuous active force. The Law of the Spirit of Life is the default, what obtains when the occupation ceases.
Paul's claim is exact. The Law of the Spirit of Life sets the creature free from the law of sin and death. The setting-free is not the production of a new condition. It is the cessation of the deviation that was preventing the prior condition from operating.
The Law of the Spirit of Life is not earned. It is not produced through accumulated work. It is what is there when the prevention stops. Paul names this again in the same letter, that the creation itself shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption. Not produced into a new state. Delivered from the state the deviation was maintaining against it.
e^(iθ) is that shape in number. The function runs without external supply, conserves its own magnitude, closes through its own rotation, and does not need to be produced. It is what is operating when nothing prevents the rotation from being what it is.

FIVE NAMES FOR ONE OPERATION
Trespass theology. The occupation. Accounting theology. The law of sin and death. The law of the books.
Five names, one operation, named at five registers. e^(rt) is what that operation runs at the financial register. It is the occupation made calculable. It is the books being kept. It is the law of sin and death given functional form.
The deviation is not the way things are. The deviation is what is being installed against the way things are, and the books register the deviation as the way things are, because the books are the deviation's continuous account of itself.
The mathematical signature of the law of sin and death is a function that does not run without external supply, does not conserve its own magnitude, and does not close. It extends across time, growing without bound, requiring continuous supply to operate as it reports. The supply is the borrower's labor, the borrower's time, the borrower's hope.

THE SUBSTITUTION IS THE TRESPASS
The law of sin and death is installed by substituting r for i. The imaginary unit becomes the rate. The rotation becomes the slope. The conservation becomes the extraction. The closure becomes an asymptote that recedes as the function runs.
This is not a generalization. It is a categorical break. The two functions share the base e and perform categorically different operations on what follows it.
This is the operation Paul names as the law of sin and death entering the territory the Law of the Spirit of Life was occupying as default. The Spirit's law was running as e^(iθ). The law of the books installed e^(rt) in its place, and the installation is the trespass at the mathematical register.
The continuous active force that maintains the substitution is the deviation requiring active maintenance. When the force ceases, the substitution ceases. When the substitution ceases, e^(iθ) runs again, not because it has been produced, but because it was running underneath the substitution the whole time.

WHY NO REFORM CROSSES
e^(rt) does not become e^(iθ) by the addition of effort. The two are categorically distinct, and no rate adjustment, no duration adjustment, no parameter modification within e^(rt) produces e^(iθ).
Every reform operates on r and on t, and leaves i out.
Lower the rate and the asymptote is extended across more periods. Tie repayment to income and the asymptote is extended across the borrower's lifetime. Grant forbearance and the function is paused without the substitution being touched. Each reform is a modification of e^(rt) with the substitution intact.
This is what Paul names when he writes that the law could not deliver, because the law could not give what the law was administering against. The law of sin and death cannot administer its way into the Law of the Spirit of Life. Reform of the books cannot post the closing of the books.
The transformation Paul names is the cessation of the first law and the obtaining of the second. Not the gradual modification of one into the other through accumulated work. The cessation is the entrance into the law that was there before the deviation.

THE SPIRAL IS THE THIRD CASE
Two functions is not the whole account, because nobody offers plain e to the rt as transformation. What is offered is the third case, and it is the sophisticated one.
Let the exponent be a + bi. Now the function turns and grows at once. It comes back around, and each time it comes back around it comes back larger. That is a spiral, and a spiral is what every doctrine of transformation-through-work is describing when it says the return is a return at a higher level.
The spiral is convincing because from certain angles it looks exactly like the circle. It turns. It returns to the same direction. It has periodicity in its argument. Everything about it reads as closure except the one thing that matters.
It never returns to a value it has already had. It is unbounded, it has no period, and the only thing it does reliably is get larger.
So the closing condition can be stated exactly, and it is a condition on one number. The real part of the exponent must be zero. Nothing may be added on the axis. The motion must be pure turning, and pure turning accumulates nothing, which is why it comes back.
This is what defeats the best available answer to this entry, which is that a better dialectic, a gentler growth, a more humane rate would close it. A better version is a smaller a, and any positive a runs away eventually. There is no rate low enough to close a function. There is only zero.
And zero is not reached by effort, because effort is the thing that has a real part. The operation with no real part is the yielding: it adds nothing, produces nothing, preserves nothing, and it is the only operation that satisfies the condition.

WHERE THE SPIRIT'S LAW GOES ON RUNNING
The conserved rotation is not absent from material existence. It runs wherever the operation closes through the perpendicular axis without accumulated work producing the closure.
Alternating current. Planetary orbits. The precession of the equinoxes. The seasons. The cycle of generations. The breath. The heartbeat.
Each conserves its own magnitude through its own turning. Each runs without external supply. Each is the Law of the Spirit of Life given material form at the register where the rotation runs.
The installation of e^(rt) did not abolish any of it. The installation amputated the rotation from the bookkeeping that had constructed itself as the account of how value moves. The rotation continues. The books continue. They run in different registers, the books reading themselves as the thing and the rotation as deviation, while the rotation is the default the books were installed against.

WHAT THE FIRST LAW PREVENTS
Read as debt, this is a story about a burden that is too heavy, and the answer to it is relief.
The operation is the prevention of refusal. A function with no term issues no discharge, and discharge is what refusal requires: a point at which the creature has finished and can walk. The first law is precisely the withholding of that point, maintained period after period, and every payment services the withholding.
Benefit is the capacity to refuse. What the first law delivers is real, and the reality is the binding: the loan funded, the house occupied, the degree conferred, the business started. Each was delivered. None conferred the standing to walk, because each was delivered on terms designed not to conclude.
The second law confers it by not being a transaction at all. Nothing is owed under a rotation. The rotation closes through itself, which means that a creature inside it is at every moment discharged, and a creature at every moment discharged is a creature who can refuse.

WHAT KEEPING IT COSTS
The tell is that the substitution is not a past event.
It is performed again in every period. The rate is reset, the terms are restated, the schedule is renegotiated, the servicer changes hands, the statement is issued, the delinquency is worked, the doctrine that the terms are natural is taught again to a new cohort. All of it continuous. None of it value.
This is the whole of the diagnosis. A deviation that requires continuous active force is a deviation, and the force is visible in the calendar. The books cannot be left alone for a year, and the seasons can.
The cost of cessation is zero on the cessation register and everything on the books. Both are true, and the second is what the first sounds like from inside the accounting.

WHAT OBTAINS WHEN THE PREVENTION STOPS
The Law of the Spirit of Life is not produced when the operation withdraws. It obtains when the operation withdraws.
The withdrawal is not the building of anything. It is the cessation of what was being installed against what was already there. When the substitution of r for i stops, e^(iθ) runs. The function does not need to be started. It was never stopped. What was being maintained was the active prevention of its admission to the books.
The books cannot post the cessation, because cessation is not an entry. It is what occurs when the books are no longer being kept against the operation that was running underneath all along. The closing of the book, shut, no longer the operation, is what occurs when the book is no longer being kept.
Paul calls this setting-free, and the setting-free is not an arrival. It is not earned, not the result of accumulated work, not the synthesis of a dialectic, not a consummation at the end of history. It is the rotation that was already turning, no longer prevented from being admitted as the account of how value moves.
The closure was always available. The continuous active force was the maintenance of its apparent unavailability. When the force ceases, the closure obtains.
