Lead is lǣdan, the causative of līþan, to go. To lead is to cause to go.
The word confesses the whole operation in its own grammar. Leadership does not name travelling. It names causing travel in someone else. The leader is not the one who goes; the leader is the one through whom others go, and the going is credited to the causing.
So the question the word cannot survive is the simplest one available. Whose motion is it. If it is hers, she does not need to be caused. If it needed causing, it was not hers.

GOVERNANCE SAYS WHO. LEADERSHIP SAYS WHITHER.
Governance and leadership are not the same claim and RegenerativeLaw does not collapse them.
Governance is the rules for who makes the rules: the coordinate system installed, the question of who counts settled, who decides and who is decided upon. It is static. It presides.
Leadership is the vector on that grid. It does not settle who counts. It settles which way, and it supplies the motion. Governance is the axes. Leadership is the heading.
This is why leadership survives every critique of governance and why the flattest organization still has one. Dissolve the hierarchy, distribute the authority, remove the titles, and the grid may genuinely loosen while the heading is still being supplied by someone who is not called a governor. The vector does not require the hierarchy. It requires only that one creature's account of where to go becomes the account the others move by.

THE SUPPLY OF HEADINGS
Perceiving takes two instruments. Eyes, which see. A face, which turns and can be turned toward. In an unoccupied creature they are one instrument: she stands somewhere, faces what is in front of her, and sees what she faces.
The occupation divides them and distributes the halves. The eyes go up into the seat that surveys, a seeing that purchased its reach by refusing to occupy anywhere that could be faced. The face stays down in the creature, intact, oriented, turned continuously and sincerely, and missing the eye that would show her what she is turned toward. So she is given the heading. She does not perceive it. She is loyal to it, and loyalty is what facing looks like when the eyes are gone.
Leadership is that severance staffed.
The leader holds the eyes: the vision, the strategy, the scan, the read of the landscape, the seeing that the others are told they lack. The follower holds the face: the orientation, the commitment, the alignment, the rowing. Neither position is a whole creature. The leader has purchased reach by becoming unaddressable and calls the missing face objectivity. The follower has been left a face and no seeing of her own and calls the missing eyes trust.
The word followership exists. It is taught. That is the confession, delivered in a single coinage: the arrangement requires a name for the half that faces without seeing, and it has one. There is no word for chordship, because the chord has no halves.

THE LEADER IMAGINES WHAT SHE WANTS
Leadership's first act is the visioning, performed on behalf of creatures who were not present for it.
The exercise cannot retrieve, because the expansion has no object and what you want names contents that do not exist prior to the asking. It can only manufacture, and it manufactures from stock: the scarce thing, and the visible other wanting it. So the vision arrives as a target that was fabricated after the fact and backdated, assembled from the available inventory.
Leadership is that operation industrialized. One rotation's retroactive object is installed as the heading of many, and the installation is what the role consists of. The leader is not accused here of insincerity. She believes the vision. She produced it honestly by the only faculty available for producing objects, and the faculty is the rotation.
She then supplies the full set. The object: the vision, the goal, the north star. The model: herself, the visible other whose wanting the others are to catch. And the villain, on schedule, because a target assigned requires an account of the distance not yet closed, so the competitor arrives, or the market, or the resistant middle, or the ones who are not bought in.

ALIGNMENT
Align: to bring into a line. The line is the axis.
Alignment is the grid's word for the end of the interval. The chord requires two genuine notes sounding across a kept interval with nothing presiding over the sound. Alignment requires that the interval close and the tones agree, and it names the closing health.
So the dissonance that is the evidence of two genuine notes is converted into a problem to be managed, and the managing is the role. The creature whose note does not resolve into the group's consonant interval is not answered. She is aligned, or she is a culture issue.
Consonance hosts dissonance and does not resolve it. Enforced harmony occupies the interval and resolves it to the tonic, and leadership is enforced harmony with a title and a salary band.

THE CAPTURED GIFT
Charisma is the gift of grace. The word names something given, and it names the giving.
In the leadership register the leader is said to have charisma. The gift has become a property held, an attribute assessed in interviews, a quality developed in programs. This is the Spark crystallized as Source performed on a single word: what proceeded through a creature is claimed as originating in her, and the claim is then priced.
The same conversion runs through the vocabulary. Presence becomes a skill. Authority, which is auctoritas from augere, to increase, to cause to grow, becomes the power to require. Vision, which named something received, becomes something possessed and communicated. Each word arrives naming a passage and leaves naming a possession, and the leader is the position where the possessions accumulate.

PROSTATIS: STANDING BEFORE, STANDING ABOVE
Romans 16 gives the forensic case, and it cuts in two directions rather than one.
Paul calls Phoebe diakonos of the church at Cenchreae, the same word, in the same masculine form, that he uses of himself, of Timothy, of Apollos, of Tychicus. Rendered minister for each of them. Rendered servant for her.
He then calls her prostatis, which appears nowhere else in the New Testament. The masculine prostates means patron, protector, chief, one who stands before. Its verb, proistēmi, is what the letters to Timothy use of male elders, and there the hands render it rule. Of Phoebe the same root is rendered helper, or succourer. And Paul says she was prostatis of many, and of himself, and instructs the church at Rome to stand by her in whatever she needs, in the imperative.
Bushnell put the vice precisely: if those men are to rule their households, then Paul says Phoebe ruled him and many others; and if Paul cannot have been ruled by a woman, then the Timothy passages cannot be instructing men to rule. The translators cannot have it both ways.
The finding stands. It is gender-differentiated translation, the same word changing meaning when she bears it.
And the correction it invites is the one this entry refuses. Give her rule back, seat her where the elders sit, and the restoration concedes that the seat is the thing worth having. That is the second signature on a granted fortress, performed at the scriptural register.
Because both renderings are wrong, in opposite directions. Pro-histēmi is to stand before, and the Greek carries protection and precedence alike. To stand before can mean the body placed in front, between what is coming and those behind it, which costs the one standing and confers nothing. It can also mean the seat placed above, which costs nothing and confers everything. English had to choose. Every hand chose the seat when the referent was a man and chose helper when the referent was a woman, and the second choice is the visible injury while the first is the one that installed the architecture.
Phoebe standing before is not Phoebe presiding. It is Phoebe in front, absorbing what would otherwise land on the ones behind her, with resources Paul lacked and protection Paul needed. The translators could not see a standing-before that was not a standing-above, so they gave the men the seat and gave her the apron.

THE SERVANT LEADER
Every critique of the seat produces a softer name for the seat.
The servant leader. The humble leader. The facilitative leader. The leader as coach, as gardener, as host, as steward.
Each correctly names something real about what command costs the commanded. Each keeps the vector.
This is the governor that learned to say flow, performed one register out. The word changes; the position does not. And the humble version is the more durable, because humility pre-empts the objection: a leader who has already named her own power is a leader whose power has been insulated by the naming. The confession becomes the credential.
The tell is that the heading is still supplied. Ask who produced the direction the room is moving in, and whether the room could have produced it without her, and whether it continues if she leaves. Servant leadership answers those three questions identically to command.
And host is the theft that should not pass unmarked. Hosting is the other received, free, not owned, what passes across the interval rather than being extracted. A host does not supply the guest with a heading. The leader who calls herself a host has taken hospitality's word for a grip, which is the operation the corpus names everywhere else and should name here.

DEVELOPED INTO IT
Leadership development confesses what leadership is.
A creature can be developed into the seat. Selected, trained, coached, promoted, credentialed. The pipeline exists and works, which means the thing at the end of it is a position and not a forging.
The note cannot be conferred. It is pressed through one creature's forge from what came through the portal, which is why no other forge could produce it and why no institution can administer it. Nothing that can be granted by a committee is a note. The leadership program does not produce a note and does not claim to. It produces an occupant.
Which is also the cost tell. The seat requires continuous performance to hold: the visibility, the confidence, the presence, the alignment maintained, the narrative refreshed. Stop, and it collapses, because it was maintenance. And when the leader leaves and the motion stops, the stopping is not evidence that she was essential. It is evidence that the motion was never the creatures' own.

WHAT THIS DOES NOT CONDEMN
A creature crosses first. Others see that the crossing is possible. That is not leadership and must not be conceded to the word.
Testimony is a note sounded. It can be received or not received; it installs nothing; it supplies no heading; it costs the one who sounds it and confers no position. The creature who went into the fire and came out marked is not leading anyone. She is evidence, and evidence has no followers.
The distinction is whether a heading was supplied. Going first and being seen is not causing to go. The one who sounds is not steering, and the ones who hear are not aligned. Nothing was brought into a line, and the interval was kept.

The chord has no conductor. Two genuine notes sound across the interval and nothing presides over the sound, which is why nothing has to be maintained for the sounding to continue and why no one has to be caused to go.
Leadership stands where that would be. It supplies an object to creatures whose motion needed none, a heading to creatures whose eyes it holds, and an alignment to an interval that was the evidence of two. The vision it installs was manufactured from stock. The gift it claims to have was given. The seat it occupies must be held continuously or it falls.
Whose motion is it. The question is available at every moment, costs nothing to ask, and cannot be answered from the seat.
