Nature Says' deep-time story about itself

THE WOUND

The creature has watched the proving ground extend backward into geological time.

She has read enough to know the killer instinct is the engine of the configuration she is inside.

She has refused the heroic-individual frame

She has refused command-and-control.

She has refused the extractive theology of conscious capitalism.

And she finds, under each refusal, the cosmology that authorizes it: a deep-time story in which forms manifest because they out-competed forms that did not, in which fitness is the metric of legitimacy, in which the present arrangement is the cumulative product of the past's winnowing, in which the survivors are the legitimate inheritors and the residency of the lost is forfeit.

The story is told in the register of science and received as the most settled territory in the modern mind. The creature reads it and finds the configuration's grammar posted four billion years back.

THE FOUR AXES POSTED ONTO DEEP TIME

The four axes are constitutive of evolutionary theory, not incidental to it.

Quantification is the population-genetics layer — allele frequencies, fitness coefficients, mutation rates, the entire mathematical accounting through which the theory becomes auditable. 

Reproducibility is the operative requirement — the same selection pressure producing the same outcome, the experimental method's grammar imported into deep time and posted as natural law.

Subject-object split is the observational position — the creature shaped by a field treated as separate from her, the boundary between creature and field maintained as the cut from which entries can be made. 

Efficient causation is the trail — variation to selection to differential reproduction, the closed book in which every entry has a ledger source.

Strip the four axes from evolutionary theory and there is no theory left.

What remains is the empirical observation that forms have changed in geological time, which is a different claim and a different jurisdiction.

The theology is the four axes posting themselves onto deep time and producing a story in their own grammar. The story is the theology explaining its own architecture by reading its architecture into the past.

EXPRESSION AS SELECTION

The phrase natural selection makes the architecture explicit. Variation produces options. The environment selects from the options. What manifests is what was chosen.

This is the Establishment's deepest theological claim, posted at the level of cosmology: that what is is what was selected, that emergence is winnowing, that manifestation is what survived the cut. The grammar precedes Darwin and outlasts him. It is the ledger's answer to the question of why anything is here.

RegenerativeLaw refuses this at the level it operates. Expression does not select from options. Expression manifests when nothing prevents it. What would actually happen if the prevention stopped is not mappable, because it is what manifests when mapping stops. Receptive radiance is not the generating function scanning the field of variants and choosing among them. Receptive radiance is what the creature perceives through when the architecture's occupation of the perceptual field ceases.

Evolution-as-cosmology posts selection at the cosmological level and calls the posting neutral description. The creature who reads receptive radiance through the selection grammar has performed the X-change at the deepest register: doubleness for single vision, manifestation for survival, the prior occupant for the survivor of the winnowing.

THE KILLER INSTINCT AS THEORETICAL FOUNDATION

The producer-product severance is not a distortion of evolutionary theory imposed on it from outside. It is the Establishment's foundation. Creatures produce offspring; differential survival of those offspring across generations is the mechanism. The producer is severed from the product because the product's success is measured at the next generation, against other products produced by other producers, in a winnowing that the producer does not survive long enough to witness. The severance is the engine.

Competition, scarcity, the proving-ground logic — these are not appropriations of biology by ideology.

They are biology's own grammar at the level of theory. Spencer's social Darwinism was not a misreading of Darwin.

Eugenics was not a perversion of evolutionary thinking. Evolutionary psychology's adaptation-talk is not a popularization that misrepresents the science. Each is the Establishment operating in the registers it was already structured to operate in. The slippage from descriptive biology to normative anthropology has no membrane to cross because the descriptive biology was already normative — survival is the metric, and what survives is what the framework recognizes.

The creature who has refused the killer instinct in the workplace and refused it in the household and refused it in the political register and refused it in the religious register finds it again, posted at the cosmological level, calling itself the way life works.

MANIFEST DESTINY IN DEEP TIME

The story evolution tells about itself is the founders' story extended four billion years back.

The present arrangement is the cumulative product of the past's competitive winnowing. The survivors are the legitimate inheritors. The residency of the lost lineages is forfeit. The forms that did not balance the books were posted as debits and removed from the field. The ledger of deep time is a ledger of debits and the present is the running total.

This is not a misreading the social Darwinist made and the careful biologist refuses. This is the structure of the science when it is read as a story about why forms are here. The careful biologist who renounces social Darwinism continues to deliver the cosmological payload through the technical work, because the cosmological payload is the technical work's framework. The creature who has read enough to refuse Manifest Destiny in its political register meets it again in deep time, where it carries the same payload and the receipts are signed by Nature Says rather than by Polk or McKinley.

Triumphalism runs continuously from Spencer through the eugenic era through evolutionary psychology into Silicon Valley's selection-of-the-fittest theology and into the conscious-capitalist developmental framework. This is not appropriation of the science by ideology. The theological structure of the science is what produces the ideology when the theology is read into the social field. The reading-back is not a misuse. It is the theology completing its own circuit.

THE POLARITY PLAY

Evolutionism versus creationism is the Establishment's grammar producing two faces of the same operation.

Both accept the precipitate as the territory and dispute the warrant.

Creationism says God Says authored the precipitate.

Evolutionism says Nature Says authored itself.

Both treat the cut as already made and argue about who holds the deed. The integrated middle position — theistic evolution, evolution as God's method, the religious naturalist register — is the third position the configuration sells as resolution. Each face holds the other's ground as neutral, and the distance between the faces is the territory of the apologist who specializes in the integration.

RegenerativeLaw refuses both because the cut is what is in dispute.

Whether the cut was authored by God Says or by Nature Says or by the integrated process of God-through-Nature is not the question RL is asking. RL is naming the cut as the Establishment's founding operation and the cosmology built on it as the configuration explaining itself. The creationism-evolutionism debate is a domestic argument inside the Establishment about which face owns the ground. RL is not a third position in that argument.

THE IMPRISONMENT IN DEEP TIME

Something is happening in time. Forms have changed. The fossil record is real. The genetic homologies are real. The evidence is what it is. The Imprisonment is not the production of the false. The Imprisonment is the holding of the genuine product by the Establishment that names itself as the enabler.

The kindling is real. Transformation in time is real. The Temperatur is forged. Qualities transform — Harshness yields to the Flash; Fire is affrighted into Light. Something is happening. The religion that explains what is happening in the register of selection-pressure-producing-fitness is not refusable by denying that something is happening. The religion is refusable by naming what it is doing with the something that is happening.

What is happening in time, RL holds, operates by attraction. The pull through the pivot at Quality 4 is not the survival of variants under pressure. It is what obtains when yielding occurs.

The forging is participation, not winnowing.

The Temperatur is what is pulled through, not what is left after the unfit have been removed. The fossil record read through the ledger is a record of debits. Read through the law of the Spirit of Life it is the Eternal Discovering — the Similitude found again and again, the Heart having gone forth before the Shape was figured, the manifestation of what manifests when nothing is preventing.

THE EMPIRICAL QUESTION AND THE COSMOLOGICAL CLAIM

The empirical question of biological change in geological time is a different question and a different jurisdiction. RL does not contest the fossil record. RL does not contest descent with modification. RL does not contest the homologies. The empirical question stays open at the register where empirical questions operate.

The cosmological claim built on the empirical question is what RL refuses. The claim that selection is the grammar of manifestation. The claim that fitness is the metric of legitimacy. The claim that the present arrangement is the cumulative product of past winnowing. The claim that the producer-product severance is the engine of becoming. The claim that what is is what was chosen. The claim that emergence is what survived the cut.

The polarity play that asks RL to choose between evolution and creation, RL declines, because both positions are inside the cut. The Establishment that asks RL to integrate evolution and creation, RL declines, because integration on the configuration's axis is the configuration's most refined product. RL's position is perpendicular to the axis. The empirical findings are received in the register where they operate. The cosmology built on them is named as one of Nature Says' most articulate productions and refused as the framework through which the creature is asked to read her own residency.
