Something breaks. Something closes the break. The sequence resumes.
The word carries no argument in it, which is most of its use. Nobody opposes repair. It arrives as competence, as care, as the adult response to damage, and the objection to it sounds like an argument for leaving things broken.
The question the word forecloses is continuity of what.

THE FOUR MOVES
A repair has a form and the form is the same wherever it runs.
Detection. The break becomes visible. A report, a lawsuit, a story, a resignation.
Excision. The damaged segment is cut out and discarded. The individuals are removed, the chapter is suspended, the officer resigns, and the removal is performed as the remedy rather than as the first step of the repair.
The template. The sequence to be restored is supplied from somewhere the break did not reach. The charter. The national body. The founding. The thing that was not on trial.
Rejoining. The ends are brought together and continuity is restored. The task force reports, the training is required, the relationship is preserved, and the record closes.
The biological case is the clearest instance and not a figure of speech: damage is detected, the segment is excised, the intact strand supplies the template, and the ends are ligated, so the sequence survives the break that was supposed to end it. A break is only an ending where nothing holds the sequence apart from the broken part.

IT IS STAFFED
None of this runs on anyone's bad faith, and the absence of bad faith is what makes it reliable.
The facilitator administers the form by which the room's violence becomes audit-passable, and does not commit the violence. The reformer opposes the harm and is seated, by that opposition, on the side of the good and out of suspicion. The ally was in the room, heard the thing said, watched the decision go, and spoke warmly at the end about how positive it had been.
Each of them closes a break, and each would describe the closing as help.
The sincerity is not a mitigating fact about the repair. It is the condition the repair requires, because a break closed by someone who meant well leaves no one to name.

HEALING IS THE WORD IT USES ABOUT ITSELF
The community is healing. The institution is moving forward. We are rebuilding trust.
Read those in the register they are said in and they are accurate. Healing there names the resumption of function, and function is specified by whatever was interrupted. When an institution says it is healing, it is reporting that the sequence is running again.
This entry makes no finding about a creature mending, and the distinction is the whole of its honesty. A body knits. A burn closes. That is not what is under examination. What is under examination is the repair of an operation, performed with her account as the material, and she is frequently not the party being healed. She is the break.

WHERE A CUT HOLDS
A cut holds where no one is employed to repair it.
That is not a counsel of despair. It is a specification, and it can be checked before anything is spent. Ask of any interruption: whose job is it to close this, what template would they use, and who pays them. Where the answers exist, the interruption is already scheduled to become a phase. Where they do not, the interruption is a stop.
A regulator is not answerable to an applicant's need for continuity, and no office exists to restore a permit that was denied. That is why a denial reaches a project that a hundred meetings could not.

THE REPAIR RUNS ON A SLOWER LOOP THAN THE BREAK
The template in those four moves is not a figure of speech, and the people who built the model of it named it themselves.
The adaptive cycle runs exploitation, conservation, release and reorganization, and it is nested: fast small cycles inside slow large ones. Two connections run between the levels. A collapse can travel upward, which is called revolt. And the larger, slower level supplies what the smaller one reorganizes from, which is called remember. Remember is the template, named as such by the model's own authors, and it is the whole of why a break at one speed is closed from another.
Which settles why excision does not reach anything. the individuals are on the fast loop and the template is on the slow one, so removing the officers, suspending the chapter, accepting the resignation and closing the file all operate at the speed of the break, while the charter, the national body and the founding sit at a speed the break never touches.
And this is what makes the continuity self-replicating rather than maintained. Nobody has to intend it. Each release is followed by a reorganization that draws on a level too slow to have been damaged, so the structure comes back without an author, and the parties who restore it are different parties each time.
So cessation has a duration, and the duration is not set by the one refusing. A withdrawal shorter than the reorganization is not a cessation at all: it is a release, and the slower level remembers its way out of it. The refusal has to be held longer than the template's reach, and the interval is specified by the slow loop.
Which is the earlier specification stated in time rather than in staffing. Not only whose job is it to close this, but how long the closing takes, and whether the interruption can be kept open longer than that.

AND THE THING BEING REPAIRED IS THE BOOT
Name the object and the vocabulary stops working.
A boot that is repaired is a boot. The break in it was never the injustice, the closing of it is not a remedy, and the party who mends it has not taken a position on what it is for. Repair is indifferent to the merit of what it restores, which is not a flaw in the concept but the property that makes it reliable, and it is why the word can be spoken warmly by everyone present while the thing resumes.

WHAT STANDS IN ITS PLACE
Three registers, and the work already names each one.
In the cycle's register, the press and not the compost. Compost returns the dead material to the soil, the soil rebuilds, the cycle restarts, and nothing was lost because everything was recycled. The press does not return the material to the ground. It crushes and what comes out is not more of the same substance.
In the books' register, the book closed and not the page balanced. Not a reconciliation, not a settlement, not a repair of the account. The book shut and withdrawn from the table where the operation was occurring.
In the operation's register, cessation. Not accommodation, not reform, not a better position on the axis that produced the wound. The withdrawal of active prevention, and the break left open.
What is asked for is not a better repair. It is the discontinuity kept.
