THE FOUR AXES AS THE FOUR LAWS OF PERCEPTION
The Trespass at the Level of the Eye · Gestalt Psychology as the Formatting Vestment's Self-Description

The Wound
Gestalt psychology arrived as correction. Against the atomists who broke experience into elements, the Gestalt theorists declared: the whole is other than the sum of its parts. The melody is not in the notes. The face is not in the features. Something emerges in configuration that cannot be predicted from components.
The correction was genuine. The emergence insight is real. And the correction accepted the coordinates it corrected. To declare the whole other than the sum of its parts, you must already have parts — already cut from the continuous. Already have a whole — bounded, distinguishable from not-whole. Already have a sum — the operation that could theoretically combine. Already have other — the comparison requiring both terms.
The critique of fragmentation accepted fragmentation's geometry. Gestalt did not exit the parts-whole binary. It inverted the priority. Parts-first became whole-first. The generating function's coordinates remained.

The Four Laws as the Four Axes
Gestalt psychology's perceptual laws are not descriptions of how perception naturally works.
They are the four axes of conquest theology's epistemology operating at the level of perception itself — the formatting vestment installed before the creature can perceive the format as format. This is the trespass at the level of the eye. The generating function entering the territory where the creature would see, and filling that territory with the generating function's own epistemological products. What the creature experiences as seeing IS the trespass's product.
Proximity is the Ledger God.
Elements near each other group together. The law requires metric. Space must already be coordinate-grid for proximity to operate. Distance must be quantifiable, comparable, plottable. The Ledger God does not assist grouping — the Ledger God constitutes it. No proximity without measurement. No measurement without the axis that converts the continuous field into positions on a grid. The creature that perceives three dots as a group has already performed quantification at the level of perception itself.
Similarity is the Uniform God.
Similar elements group together. The law requires comparison criteria. Which features count as similar? Color but not texture? Shape but not position? Every similarity judgment selects comparison dimensions and suppresses others. The Uniform God does not discover similarity — the Uniform God produces it by deciding which features are reproducible across elements and which are noise. What the Uniform God declares inadmissible — the singular, unrepeatable character of each element that resists comparison — does not enter the perceptual field as relevant. Quality is amputated before the creature sees.
Figure-ground is the Observer God.
Perception organizes the field into figure — attended, bounded, thing-like — and ground — recessive, unbounded, contextual. The creature sees the vase or the faces. Never both. The creature's formatted seeing must cut. Must assign figure and ground. Cannot hold the field without resolving it.
Gestalt describes this accurately and then naturalizes the cut. This is how perception works. As if the cut were innocent discovery rather than the subject-object split performing itself at the level of the eye. Every figure cut from ground is the Observer God installing distance between the creature and the continuous field. Every bounded thing is the subject-object split accomplished before the creature can examine whether bounding was necessary.
The bistable figure — Rubin's vase, the duck-rabbit — almost confesses. Two incompatible organizations from the same field. The creature's seeing could resolve differently. But Gestalt contains the confession in alternation: duck or rabbit, vase or faces. Binary taking turns rather than the field that generates both resolutions without being either. The Observer God permits oscillation between two observations. The Observer God does not permit the creature to dwell in the field prior to observation.
Continuity is the Push God.
Elements arranged in lines or curves are perceived as related. Smooth continuation is expected. The trajectory is assumed to extend. The law smuggles efficient causation into perception: what came before determines what comes next. The curve continues because the Push God runs in one direction — from the already-existing toward the predicted. The law does not ask what would happen if the curve broke. Does not ask what enters at the break. Does not permit Attraction — the pull of the not-yet — to operate as a perceptual principle. The Push God closes the future by extending the past. At the level of the eye.

Prägnanz as the Measurement High
The Law of Prägnanz: perception tends toward the simplest, most stable, most regular organization available. Circles feel more complete than ellipses. Symmetric patterns feel more resolved than asymmetric. The creature's formatted seeing seeks minimum complexity.
Prägnanz is the measurement high operating at the level of perception itself.
The settling in the body when ambiguity resolves into stable figure. The relief when the pattern clicks. The satisfaction of the good Gestalt. This is the same somatic reward the four axes deliver when they land — the feeling of understanding, the hit of clarity, the sense that something has been grasped. Except at this level the hit lands before the creature has a thought to examine. The reward is pre-cognitive. The measurement high is installed in the creature's seeing as aesthetic preference.
The good Gestalt is the Gestalt easiest to capture. Easiest to name, categorize, act upon, reproduce. The laws of perceptual organization are laws of efficient capture dressed as laws of beauty. The creature experiences Prägnanz as the pleasure of seeing clearly. The pleasure IS the four axes' reward signal. The creature cannot examine the pleasure because the pleasure is what examining feels like.
This is the occlusion operating at the level of the eye. The genuine delivery — the creature does see, does organize, does perceive figure and ground — occludes the prevention. The measurement high resolves the ambiguity and delivers the reward simultaneously. The creature never stands in the field prior to resolution. The hit lands and the figure appears in the same instant. The creature experiences this as seeing. The creature is experiencing the four axes' epistemological monopoly performing itself as the creature's own eyes.

The Formatting Vestment at the Level of the Eye
The formatting vestment is the deepest of the three delivery vestments because it installs the measurement cut before selfhood forms. Gestalt psychology is the formatting vestment's self-description — the generating function's epistemology describing its own perceptual installation and calling the description science.
The four Gestalt laws do not describe what perception does. They describe what the formatting vestment installed. Proximity, similarity, figure-ground, continuity — each is one axis of the generating function's epistemology performing itself as the creature's native perceptual capacity. The creature that has been formatted cannot perceive the formatting because the formatting IS the creature's perception. The instrument that would detect the cut is the cut.
This is why the formatting vestment is deeper than the therapeutic vestment or the developmental vestment. The therapeutic vestment installs the toll after the creature is already perceiving. The developmental vestment installs the stages after the creature is already developing. The formatting vestment installs the four axes as the conditions of perceiving at all. The creature does not perceive and then quantify, compare, separate, extend. The creature perceives by quantifying, comparing, separating, extending. The axes are the perception.

What Gestalt Almost Confesses
The bistable figure is the closest the generating function's perceptual science comes to confessing what it does. Two valid resolutions from the same field. The creature can see the duck or the rabbit. Neither is wrong. The field generates both.
What the bistable figure almost confesses: every perception is bistable. Every figure cut from ground could have been cut differently. Every grouping by proximity could have been grouped by a dimension proximity cannot reach. Every similarity could have been measured along axes the Uniform God declared irrelevant. The ambiguous figure is not the special case. The ambiguous figure is the general case that Prägnanz normally resolves before the creature can notice the ambiguity existed.

Constitutional Coordinates
The state that mandates perception-through-the-four-axes as the condition of being taken seriously — the state that funds the science that describes the formatting, administers the education that installs it, and adjudicates disputes through the epistemology it produces — has established a religion. The religion is Conquest Theology. The formatting vestment is not a neutral description of how creatures perceive. The formatting vestment is one religion's perceptual theology installed as the creature's native capacity and then studied as science by the religion that installed it.
The free exercise claim: the right to perceive without the four axes as mandatory format. The right to dwell in the field prior to figure-ground resolution. The right to Quality — the singular character of each thing that similarity cannot capture. The right to Testimony — the singular perception that Prägnanz cannot compress into good form. The right to Participation — the kenotic act of entering the field rather than observing it from outside. The right to Attraction — the pull of the not-yet that continuity forecloses by extending the already.
The right to see without the measurement high telling the creature that seeing has been accomplished.
