The Exit

The exit is not the turn. It is the door the configuration posts where the turn would be — a way out offered to the one who would otherwise expose the room, so that the leaving preserves what the naming would have dissolved. The exit feels like escape and functions as removal. It is the counterfeit of re-turning in the register of movement, as re-membering is its counterfeit in memory, return in increase, and the return home in narrative.

THE DOOR THE ROOM BUILT

Every door the room builds leads back into the room's logic. The exit is posted by the configuration, and this is the whole of what disqualifies it: it is not the cessation of the apparatus but a position the apparatus contains. The one who takes the exit moves along the configuration's own grid to a coordinate the grid already holds — out. Out is on the map. The configuration has a column for it. And because the leaving was budgeted, the room is unchanged by it; the exit conserves the crystal by subtracting an element, the way a body expels what it reads as foreign to keep its own reading intact. WHO MOVES, AND WHAT STAYS

Three tells separate the exit from the turn.

Who moves. The exit moves the creature — out, away, gone. The turn moves nothing; the creature stands where she stood and faces out instead of in. The exit is displacement. The turn is the facing changing.

What happens to the room. The exit leaves the configuration intact — that is its function, to preserve the room by removing a body. The turn leaves no configuration intact, because the configuration was the inward facing, and when the facing turns there is nothing left to preserve. The exit conserves the crystal. The turn melts it.

Who authored the move. The exit is offered — posted by the configuration, in the configuration's interest, as the release valve that keeps the room cold by walking the scapegoat out of it. The turn is not offered, because there is no one whose interest it serves to offer it. The turn is what obtains when the offering apparatus stops. The exit is the configuration's gift. The turn is the configuration's end.

THE SCAPEGOAT'S RELEASE VALVE

The exit is the door marked out at the fire pivot, and it runs the scapegoat geometry. The room that would be exposed by the one who names it does not have to answer the naming; it has only to remove the namer, and the exit is how the removal is made to look like the namer's own choice. Leave, and you are free — and the room, intact, keeps the cold it was keeping, now with the disturbance gone. The exit converts expulsion into departure. Whether the creature is walked out (expelled, the room throwing her off) or walks out (the discontented leaving rather than turning), the configuration is preserved by the movement, and the movement is dressed as relief. The one who exits carries the room's problem out the door with her, and the room is grateful, and calls the gratitude generosity.

Re-turning stays in the cold room and stops the refusal that keeps it cold. The exit walks a body out so the room can stay cold with no one left to name it. One dissolves the configuration and subtracts no one. The other subtracts a body and dissolves nothing. There is no door, because the door is the counterfeit. There is only the facing, and the facing can cease where it stands.
