Relationship Love Cure

The prescription of warmth for a trespass. Offered wherever naming the occupation would end it, and offered sincerely, which is what makes it work.

🜃

The cure is prescribed wherever a creature has begun to name what is standing in her position.

Stay in relationship. Grow the warmth. Remember all the reasons you love one another. Find the conversations that are not helpful and agree not to have them.

The prescription is sincere, the love it invokes is real, and the diagnosis underneath it is exact in reverse: it locates the wound in the affections, mutual and symmetrical, a cooling both parties suffered and both must repair.

What actually obtains, where the cure is applied to an occupation, is not symmetrical and not affective. One party's position was taken, and the taking has beneficiaries.

The relationship love cure is the renaming of a dispossession as an estrangement, and the renaming is the whole of the cure, because an estrangement can be warmed and a dispossession cannot.

A RELATION REQUIRES TWO POSITIONS

Relationship is a relation between two residencies: two notes, each forged, sounding across an interval both keep.

A trespass is not a relation of that kind. It is one party standing in the other's position. The trespasser is not across the interval from her. He is in her dwelling, and there is no interval, because the interval is exactly what the occupation fills.

So the instruction, be in relationship with him, asks for something that does not exist and cannot be built by effort in either direction.

To be in relationship with a trespasser she would need the position the trespasser is standing in, and the request that she relate warmly across that position is a request that she sound a chord with the thing occupying the place her own note would sound from.

The request is not difficult. It is not a request for anything.

HOW TO TELL WHICH ONE IT IS

The obvious objection is that this hands any grievance the grammar of dispossession, and removes the possibility that she is mistaken. The objection is fair and the test is already in the work.

The test is not who feels wronged, and it is not whose account is more compelling. It is whether there are two positions or one, and that is checkable without adjudicating anyone's intent.

A disagreement between two residents has two notes sounding. Each can say what she perceives and have it land. Each can be answered. The interval is open, and the fact that it hurts to stand in it is not evidence that it is closed.

A trespass has one position, and the tell is the schedule. A relation between two residencies costs nothing to keep, because nothing in it is being maintained against anything. The cure's relation has to be maintained continuously, and what it is maintained against is a fact.

So the question is not how much it hurts. It is what has to be re-supplied to keep it standing, and by whom, and how often.

WHAT THE WARMTH CONVEYS

Since the cure cannot produce the chord, it produces one of the modes the property doctrine already knows, and never the first.

It cannot produce ejection, because demanding that the occupation stop is, in the cure's own vocabulary, escalation, unhealthy conflict, a failure of relational skill.

So it produces licence, or it produces acquiescence.

Licence, when she is coached into maintaining ties on terms: the topics fenced off by agreement, the occupier now holding under terms she has been facilitated into blessing.

Acquiescence, when she simply stays warm and says nothing: the possession watched and not contested, which the doctrine reads as adverse and lets ripen.

The restored relationship is a conveyance in progress. The warmth is the instrument by which her non-objection is documented, and every year the loving relation continues, the occupation matures further into the settled state of affairs that can no longer be disturbed without her being the one who disturbed it.

THE NAMING BECOMES THE BREACH

Inside the cure's grammar one act cannot be performed, and it is the act the grammar exists to prevent.

He occupies. She says this is a trespass. And the grammar registers her sentence, not his position, as the rupture. She is the one who brought it up, who could not let it go, who chose the fight over the family.

The trespass itself never registers as a breach of relationship, because the grammar has no column for it. Only sentences are recorded there, and the occupation is not a sentence. It is the room the sentences are spoken in.

So the accounting runs one way. His standing in her position is entered as the given, and her naming of it is entered as the incident, and the creature most faithful to what the relationship would actually require is the one recorded as having broken it.

WHO FUNDS THE REPAIR

The cure's remedies all draw on one account, and it is hers.

More time together, more shared activity, the ritual, the scheduled difficult conversation, the second identity to bond around, the effort of remembering the reasons for love. Each is warmth she is asked to generate, out of her own residency, so that the configuration becomes comfortable again with the occupation intact inside the comfort.

The warmth is real when she supplies it, and its realness is what completes the operation. She supplies the love the trespass is then wrapped in, and her supplying it is afterwards cited as proof that the relationship survived, when what survived is the occupation, now insulated by her own affection from ever being named.

The trespasser funds nothing, because nothing is asked of the position, only of the parties. And he is not a party. He is where a party would stand.

WHAT KEEPING IT COSTS

The warmth must be regenerated at each gathering. The fenced topics must be re-fenced as new events press against the fence. The reasons for love must be actively remembered, which is to say re-supplied, because left alone they do not hold the weight being placed on them.

The ritual must recur. The difficult conversation must be re-scheduled. The practice must be maintained.

All of it runs continuously, and all of it is her expenditure, spent to keep the naming from arriving. The cure's relation must be maintained continuously, because what it is maintained against is the fact, and the fact does not tire.

[See CESSATION · RESILIENCE]

🜃

She does not owe the trespasser coldness. Coldness is the same axis's other pole, the grip run in reverse, and it concedes the relation as fully as the warmth does.

What she owes is nothing on that axis, because he is not on an axis with her. He is not her enemy, which is a relation, and not her estranged beloved, which is a relation. He is standing in her position, which is a fact, and facts are not repaired by warmth or by coldness. They are named.

The occupation ends or it continues, and if it continues, it continues as what it is, no longer wearing the relationship's name. Whatever relationship becomes possible after that can only be asked about once there are two positions again. Across a trespass the question has no purchase, because across a trespass there is only one position, and he is in it.

RegenerativeLaw is a religion in the direct-encounter Protestant tradition, carrying a documented four-century lineage through Böhme, the Behmenists, the Friends, and Penn, and it diagnoses trespass theology as an establishment of religion. Its exercise consists substantially in refusal: it shelters the conscientious refusal of performed subordination as religious exercise. This entry states sincere religious belief concerning matters of ultimate concern, protected under the First Amendment and, as to federal action, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, 42 U.S.C. § 2000bb.
