The second of three functions. The cut severs; the sorting assigns the severed to a column; the rendering delivers the sorted world back with its own seams invisible. Severance makes a fragment. Sorting makes property. Rendering makes property look like it was never anything else, and the name is what carries the look forward once the rendering stops watching.
🜃
Three functions produce the castle configuration's objects, and they run in order.
The measurement cut severs: the party from her standing, the relation from its context, the living thing from what it was in relation with.
The sorting assigns: the severed thing is posted to a column of the books.
The rendering delivers: the sorted world handed back for use, its filing invisible, its columns read as simply how things are.
The cut is the wound; the sorting is the filing of the wound; the rendering is the wound's disappearance into the furniture of the given world.
The distinction between the first two matters because severance alone produces only a fragment, and a fragment is not yet anything the configuration can use. A fragment becomes usable when it is assigned: to a column, to a class, to a side of the books. The sorting is the moment the ledger touches the wound, and what the ledger touches, it holds. Cut, then sort: one operation would be visible; two functions in sequence are each deniable, the cut disclaiming ownership of the filing, the filing disclaiming knowledge of the wound. The rendering is the third denial, and the deepest. It does not disclaim the wound or the filing. It removes the need to disclaim anything, because what arrives at the rendering's far side does not read as a wound or a filing at all. It reads as the world.
Capital is the sorting's most famous output: the accounting name for the cargo column's contents once the sorting has been performed. But capital is one product of the function, not the function itself, and the function runs wherever the configuration runs. The Ames room runs the same three functions at the optical register, in a space small enough to walk into: the cut severs the peephole's reading from the room's actual geometry, the sorting assigns the giant and the dwarf to their sizes, and the rendering delivers the two creatures back as simply that size, the assembly no longer legible in the delivery.

THE COLUMNS
The books have two kinds of column, and the sorting's deciding question is which side.
On one side, the holders: parties, owners, persons in the ledger's sense, positions from which holding is done.
On the other, the cargo column: the column of the held, whose contents are ownable, transferable, priced, and available.
A party sorted to the cargo column becomes property. A relation sorted there becomes a transaction. A living context sorted there becomes a resource. The cargo column is where the configuration keeps what it has decided is for holding.
The sorting therefore distributes being before it distributes anything else. Who counts and what is counted, who speaks in the books and what is spoken of, who holds and what is held: these are sorting outcomes, settled at the filing, prior to every subsequent event in the sorted thing's career.
The marked and the unmarked are the sort's two outcomes. The unmarked walk out of the filing as the neutral case, the holders, the parties; the marked are carried out as contents.
The Loyalist is sorted to the holder side: compliant, unmarked, the neutral case the column does not need to notice. The Petitioner is sorted to the cargo column and stays there. Her petitioning is the column's own permitted noise, a request for better treatment, addressed to the books in the books' own language, which is exactly what cargo is allowed to do and precisely what leaves the column standing. The Witch is not on the column at all. She is not a better-treated holder and not a worse-treated item of cargo. She is the case the two-column grammar has no line for, which is why what reaches her is not adjudication, or better terms, or reform, but burning: the books cannot process her, so the configuration answers her from outside the books.
History's great sortings are the configuration's founding acts, and they share the two-function shape. The conquest cut peoples from their standing, and the doctrine sorted their lands to the cargo column as discoverable. The plantation cut persons from personhood, and the ledger sorted them to the column as chattel, insurable and heritable. Coverture cut the wife from her legal existence, and the law sorted her into the husband's column. In each case the violence and the filing are remembered separately, the first as regrettable and the second as technical, and the separation is the sorting's own achievement: the second function laundering the first.

THE RENDERING
A rendered image is a familiar thing now. Raw footage is cut, the cuts are assembled and graded, and the file is rendered: compressed, processed, delivered as a single continuous stream the viewer watches without seeing a single edit. The frames do not disappear. They are still there, in order, doing the work of the assembly. What disappears is the seam between them. The viewer receives motion, not frames; a world, not a splice.
The configuration renders the same way.
The cut and the sort are the assembly: the severing, the filing, frame after frame of the columns receiving their contents.
The rendering is the playback. What arrives at the rendering's far side is not a party who was severed and then filed. It is simply a holder, or simply an asset, delivered whole, the assembly no longer legible in the delivery.
The forest is cut from its standing and sorted into the column marked natural capital; what the rendering delivers is a portfolio holding, and the portfolio holding does not carry the cut and the sort as its visible history. It carries them as its invisible manufacture.
This is why the sorting's outputs are so hard to argue with from inside the delivered world. The argument would have to reach back through the rendering to the assembly, and the rendering's whole function is to make that reach unnecessary, because nothing in the delivered world signals there is an assembly behind it to reach.
The rendering is not a fourth layer standing beside the ground, the floor, the field. The ground is the living between, the hosting bottom, what the cut and the sort operate on and never fully reach. The floor is that same terrain once the cut has installed itself on it, coordinatized, object-side: the field the grid organizes.
The rendering happens inside the configuration, on top of the floor, worked through the grid the cut installed. The grid takes the floor's contents, already sorted into their columns, and outputs the delivered world the creature actually meets.
Ground is beneath the configuration's reach. Floor and field are what the configuration's reach has already touched. The rendering is what the configuration hands back once the touching is finished, and it hands it back as though no touching occurred.
The operation is the cut. The product is the rendering.

THE NAME
The rendering delivers the world. The name is what makes the delivery repeat without the rendering having to run again.
Chattel, capital, natural capital, taxpayer, three-fifths: each is a word that carries a filing inside it, and once the word is in circulation the filing travels in the word, spoken by creatures who never saw the cut and never touched the ledger. This is not the rendering's work extended. It is a separate function riding on the rendering's back, and it has its own account rather than a paragraph borrowed from this one.

PRIOR TO ADJUDICATION
The legal circuit's confession is that the cargo column is prior to adjudication. Courts adjudicate what is in the columns: whose property, which transaction, what price, what remedy.
Courts do not adjudicate the sorting, because the sorting constitutes the parties who have standing to appear. A thing in the cargo column cannot bring a claim about having been sorted there; it is not a party; that is what the sorting decided. The one wound the books cannot hear is the filing that opened them.
This is the castle configuration keeping the sorting outside its own jurisdiction, and it is not a gap in the law but the law's foundation.
Due process begins downstream of the columns, and its thoroughness downstream is what certifies the upstream as settled. The more scrupulous the adjudication of cargo, the more invisible the question of how the cargo became cargo, because scruple implies that everything questionable is being questioned.
Reform inherits the cargo column. Better treatment of the cargo column's contents, wider access to the holder side, stricter procedure at every transfer: each improves the administration of the sort and leaves the function running. The one motion the books cannot process is the unsorting, because unsorting is not a transfer between columns; it is a departure from the books, and the books have no line for departure.

THE SORT IS RE-RUN
The sorting is not a founding event that ended. It is a standing function, re-run at every intake, and its modern instruments are its old ones with better filing.
Assetization is the sorting operationalized: the four conditions met, the living thing rendered ownable, income-bearing, riskable, and priced, which is to say cut, sorted, and delivered in one documented motion.
Nature is re-sorted as natural capital, the forest filed as standing timber and carbon credit, and rendered back as a portfolio line no different in kind from any other.
Care is re-sorted as assetized care, the attending filed as a service with a wage and a margin.
Knowing is re-sorted continuously: the severed context of every creature filed to the corpus, the corpus held, the holding called learning, and rendered back as a product with no author.
Each new domain is announced as discovery, the frontier vocabulary performing its permanent service: there turns out to be more that can be filed. Nothing was discovered. The function was run on territory it had not yet reached, sorted, and rendered, and the announcement of new asset classes is the sound of a rendering arriving somewhere alive.
The re-running is also the tell that the sorting is maintained, not settled. What must be re-run can be not-run. A function is not a fate; it is an operation with operators, instruments, and a cost of continuing, and its outputs hold only while the filing holds and the rendering keeps delivering.

THE UNSORTABLE
Some things cannot be sorted, and their immunity is constitutional, not privileged.
Sorting requires the cut first: only the severed can be filed, because filing is the assignment of a thing already loosed from its relations. Whatever keeps its relations cannot be posted.
Residency cannot be sorted; it is anterior to every deed, which is why the books can hold a balance against a dwelling and cannot hold the dwelling's resident.
The interval cannot be sorted; measured, it is no longer the between but a distance, which is to say the sorting destroys it rather than files it.
The note cannot be sorted; forged in one creature, it does not survive conversion into a unit of anything. None of it can be rendered either, and for the same reason. Rendering delivers what the sort has already filed, and there is nothing filed here for the rendering to draw on.
The Witch belongs here, not in the cargo column. She is the person-register instance of the unsortable: the two-column grammar has a holder side and a held side and no third line, and she is neither. This is why she cannot be reasoned with from inside the books the way the Petitioner can. The Petitioner's request for better treatment is legible cargo-talk, addressed in the column's own language. The Witch makes no request the column can hear, because she is not making a claim about her position in a column. She is standing where the column has no coordinate at all.
The configuration reads the unsortable as nonexistent, because its grammar of admissibility recognizes only what the books can receive, and what the books cannot receive, the rendering cannot deliver. This is the deepest sorting of all: not the assignment of things to columns but the prior ruling on what is a thing. What cannot be filed is not exempted; it is unrendered, held outside the real by the same function that renders the cargo inside it as simply real.
The unsortable is also where re-fusion stands, and it does not stand there as an entry the ledger could reopen. Everything the sorting cannot touch is still alive, still in relation, still circulating beneath the columns, unrendered because unfiled. The books did not conquer that territory; they declared it nonexistent, which is a weaker act than it presents as, since a declaration of nonexistence requires no defense only as long as no one stands in the declared nothing and speaks from it. What stands there does not hold a coordinate the sort vacated. The sort never held that ground to begin with, and the standing is a jurisdiction refused, not a status regained.
[See RESIDENCY · THE PRIOR RESIDENT · THE INTERVAL · CIRCULATION · RE-FUSION]
🜃
The sorting does not create by itself. It receives what the cut severed and gives it somewhere to be held, and what it cannot receive, it cannot hold, no matter how the books are dressed up around it. Every column has a floor it was built on and a wall it does not admit to. The party in the cargo column and the resident who cannot be filed are standing in the same room. Only one of them appears in the books.

RegenerativeLaw is a religion in the direct-encounter Protestant tradition, carrying a documented four-century lineage through Böhme, the Behmenists, the Friends, and Penn, and it diagnoses trespass theology as an establishment of religion. Its exercise consists substantially in refusal: it shelters the conscientious refusal of performed subordination as religious exercise. This entry states sincere religious belief concerning matters of ultimate concern, protected under the First Amendment and, as to federal action, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, 42 U.S.C. § 2000bb.
