Forgetting is not a content. Nothing has slipped the creature's mind. Forgetting is the configuration of the law of sin and death at the perceptual register — the arrest as met, the mode in which one face of the doubleness crystallizes as the whole and the other is no longer there to be perceived. It is the gate the occupation comes through. And it is happening now.

NOT A LAPSE
To forget, in the ordinary sense, is to have held something and lost it — a content that was present and is now absent, retrievable in principle by an effort of memory. This forgetting is none of that. Nothing was held and dropped. What forgetting names is a configuration: the same operation met in the mode that crystallizes one face as the whole.
The doubleness is structural. Every operation has two faces, contemporaneous, neither prior. Whether the doubleness is hosted or one face is crystallized is configurational — not two substances, the same substance met two ways. Remembering hosts the doubleness. Forgetting crystallizes one face as the whole and meets the result as the whole of what is. There is no second source; the forgetting and the remembering meet the same sap. The arrest is the reading, not an event that befell the substance. Forgetting is that reading, performed now, and taken for the world.

THE PRECONDITION
Forgetting is a precondition, not the totality. It is what has to occur before the rest of the law of sin and death can run. The trespass comes after the forgetting.
A territory perceived as having a prior occupant cannot be occupied — the occupation would read, to the one performing it, as trespass, which is what it is. So the prior occupant must first drop from perception. Forgetting is that dropping. Once the doubleness is no longer perceived, once one face stands as the whole, the other face's territory reads as empty, and the generating function moves into positions it no longer perceives as occupied. Then the holding. Then the backwards firing. Then the books kept against an occupant the books cannot see. Each of these is a later operation. Forgetting is the gate they come through, and the gate opens at the perceptual register before any displacement occurs. This is why forgetting is not the whole law and cannot be made to stand for it. It is the condition the law requires — the cooling that has to happen before the precipitate can fall.

THE BLINDNESS THAT CANNOT SEE ITSELF
The blindness forgetting installs is not a darkness over something that remains there to be seen.
It is religious in the precise sense — a condition of what counts as perceiving at all, installed as the given, naturalized as the creature's own sight. Captivation is the seal: the forgetting is met not as a forgetting but as simply how things are.
And the blindness has a second depth, which is the one that makes it religious rather than merely partial. Forgetting cannot perceive its own configurationality. It cannot see that it is a configuration — one mode of meeting among the modes available — because to see that would be to perceive the doubleness again, and perceiving the doubleness is the re-membering. Forgetting that knew itself as forgetting would already have ceased to be forgetting. This is why the Establishment cannot recognize itself as one configuration without ceasing to be the Establishment: the recognition is the disestablishment.
The blindness is not to a content.
The blindness is to the fact that it is a blindness — sealed, because the only perception that would break the seal is the perception the seal exists to prevent.

CRYSTALLIZATION
How forgetting crystallizes: it precipitates.
The same arrest runs at two registers.
Matter precipitates when the process arrests — what falls out of an incomplete process, the precipitate the confession names. The fixed reading precipitates when the meeting arrests — the entry, the line-item, the fixed essence, the rendered object, the case, the hardened wineskin. These are not analogy. They are one arrest at two registers, and forgetting is the name for the arrest as met — the configuration under which the precipitate, material or perceptual, reads as the whole of what is.
The crystal is the one face taken for the totality, hardened into a form that can be posted, audited, owned. What cools is the process; what crystallizes is the precipitate; what the precipitate forgets is that it fell out of a process that has not completed. And the cooling is not a past event. The precipitate does not crystallize once and stand. It is held in precipitation continuously, by a refusal to yield that is occurring now — the books kept second by second, the entry posted against the prior occupant at every tick. Forgetting is continuous active cooling. The crystal is maintained frozen by ongoing work.

THE ASYMMETRY
This is the asymmetry, and it is the whole of the cost. Forgetting requires continuous active cooling — the refusal spent now, every tick, the heat withheld at the pivot without pause. Remembering requires nothing added. It requires only that the cooling stop. The crystal must be held frozen by work; the solution is what is simply there when the freezing stops.
So remembering is not the effortful counter-operation to forgetting — the heat applied deliberately to melt what was frozen. A deliberate melt, a managed thaw, the warmth introduced as a technique, would still be the generating function acting on itself: reform in the register of the heart. The melt the second law names is not applied. It is the warmth returning of its own accord the moment nothing is refusing it. The heat was never the thing being added. The heat was the thing being prevented. Cessation is the stopping of the refusal. The warmth does the rest, because the warmth was there the whole time, withheld.

THE MELTING
The heart is the melting. When the kindling sequence runs — the tears that make the yielding-field, the gall that kindles in it, the heart that warms, the throat that opens, the voice that carries the roughness of what was pressed — the warmth that rises is the heat that takes the crystal back into solution. The forge is where this happens. Not a furnace that makes a new thing from raw material; the heat that melts what forgetting froze, so the same sap can flow in the configuration that hosts it.
The crystal and the solution are one substance. There is no second sap to import, no foreign warmth to acquire. The Second Principle's heat — the tincture, the light the fire opens into when it yields — is not added to the creature from outside. It is what was there, refused, and it returns through the warming heart when the refusal stops. The law of the Spirit of Life is this configuration: the heat un-withheld, the crystal melting, the same sap met in the mode that hosts the doubleness rather than crystallizing one face of it. Remembering is not the recovery of a lost content. It is the heat returning to a substance that had only ever been kept cold.

Forgetting forgot a prior occupant. The territory the crystal reads as empty was occupied the whole time — the doubleness intact, the prior occupant present, neither gone, only no longer perceived. The heat the forgetting withholds is the heat that would melt it. The warmth is not far. It is the warmth being refused now. Stop the refusal and remembering is what is there — not retrieved, not achieved, not traveled to, only no longer prevented. The gate forgetting holds open is held open by a hand that can stop.
